I had a scan through Kaxon's chances list. Pretty good stuff. I hate to pick the one flaw out of an otherwise good list, so just know that the rest of the characters are bang on. :P But Ryu Hayabusha, 60%? That's much much too high. Ryu had hype in 2004, so he got a good seed. Also Cjay might have tweaked it a bit to catch people off guard with an underseeded Jill. In 2005, he was lucky to return with a 6 seed. Plus his popularity took a fall. I think if this was a 64 character battle, his chances of getting back again are slim. Maybe 33%. It's not, the xbox has been dead for a year, so his chances are a lot closer to 6% than 60% IMO. --- Is fheàrr teine beag a gharas na teine mòr a loisgeas. |

1. Odds that a Nomination Rally winner wins a match 10%. Even among middle seeds, the male side of the bracket will be loaded, and none of the rally winners will have a high enough seed to go up against someone like CATS. I can't see a Rally character winning unless two of them somehow get matched up in the first round. 2. Odds that we see a Final Fantasy VIII character besides Squall 95%. We've got a better chance of seeing two (Rinoa & Quistis) than we do of seeing none. 3. Odds that we see a Final Fantasy IX character at all (and if you think Vivi makes it, odds that a second FFIX character makes it) I'll give Vivi 25% and Garnet 30% (FF9 did fare well with fodder seeding in the villains contest), so I'll say there's a 52.50% chance of seeing one FF9 character and a 7.50% chance of seeing two. 4. Odds that we see a new Chrono Trigger character 70%. Lavos pulled a three seed in a fodder bracket, so I think Marle has a good shot of cracking the female side. 5. Odds that Toadette actually makes the contest 1%. There's no casual support, and marginal support from the board. I'd be stunned if she makes it. 6. Odds that we see ANY cult RPG characters on the males side (Vyse, Laharl, Luca, Kratos Aurion, etc.) 10%. I can't consider Ness cult because of Smash Brothers, which leaves Lloyd Irving and Kratos Aurion as the most likely candidates. There's a chance that one of them will make it, but that male side's going to be tough to crack (see below). 7. Odds that somebody in the top 25 of the 2005 adjusted stats misses the contest (and who do you think is the MOST likely to miss out?) 85%. Knuckles wouldn't have made a 32-male bracket last year, Vincent would have been on the cut line, and DK & Magus wouldn't have been that much safer. If they all somehow make the field, at least one of them is getting a 7 or 8 seed. 8. Odds that Crono finally gets a 1 seed this year (he's gone up one seed every year) 0%. There were too many males ahead of him last year, and if any Square male leapfrogs into a one seed this contest, it's going to be Sora. 9. Odds that Sora breaks the top 20 in the 2006 overall stats (females and Clinkerothio included, yo) 40%. He needs to avoid SFF and he needs something funky to happen when the Samus/Zelda/Tifa/Aeris mess sorts itself out. 10. Odds that we see a Final Fantasy character from before FFVI (Rydia is probably the most likely, I'd say) 5%. If any get in, they'll be lowly seeded for sure. Support for the rally
winners was really strong last year (I think, outside of CATS, they
were the top 5 most nominated characters on the board), but not so much
this year. Of course, the fact that our total nominations for males
were cut down to 7 and all of them were male, that hurts a little. Besides, some big name character(s) is going to miss out this year anyway. But there's no way you see somebody like DK get stuck with an 8 against, say, Crono. Raiden's had a 16 seed before. Why wouldn't he get another? Scorpion's last appearance, he had a 14 seed. Captain Falcon getting a high seed with this group? Not happening. Nightmare? Assuming that we get a main bracket free of past champs, the 1-4 seeds on the male side should be mostly taken up by this group of 16: Solid Snake Mega Man Sonic Crono Squall Ganondorf Bowser Zero Dante Kirby Auron Luigi Sora Yoshi Ryu Master Chief If the likes of DK/Magus/Knuckles/Vincent/Tidus/etc. crack the field (and don't draw Master Chief in the opening round), they'd wind up in very tough first round matches even as 5's or 6's. PoP And some good stuff I see. Props to Kaxon for those predictions. If there was another ToC, I'd also like to see Link vs. Seph and Mario vs. Cloud, then Link vs Cloud in the finals (because we all know its going to come down to it). As for seeds, I don't think we'll see something like Crono/DK (aka 1 seed vs. a strong 8 seed). We might get a few 2v7's like that, but all the 1v8 should be fodder (rally chacaters basically). Unless CJay leaves out several worthy characters in order to make
the 7's & 8's pure fodder, then we're pretty much guaranteed to see
something along the lines of Crono/DK as a first round matchup. Honestly, if we go by straight up statistical order for who makes the field, you have to get all the way down to Alucard (who's ranked at 39th, by the way) before you get a regular male who earns an 8, and that's not counting who gets snubbed (because it's going to happen). There are certain characters who just won't be Noble Nine fodder in the first round, and we WILL get at least four bonafide fodderific characters (Phoenix Wright, for example). If it was someone even partially decent, like say Toad, it'd hurt a
whole lot less. Why do I care about a thing that's created for a single
game to be a female Toad. Someone forgot they were asexual. And I'm not
really sure i think she can make
the field of 32, but if she does she may be fair replacement for Jay

catch people off guard with an underseeded Jill. I was set to give him a lower score, until I saw that Ninja Gaiden Black had come out in the last year with extremely good reviews. He might still be too high, though. Kax, let's hear what number you're giving Toadette's chances. Well, in a separate post I said 75%, but I might revise that down to about 60% now. I do think a lot of people are overestimating how difficult it will be to get into the female half of the bracket - anyone with a coordinated nomination drive should have a decent chance. All the major FF girls should have great chances as well - for the most part, I expect nominations on that side to be more spread out, since there weren't as many nomination rallies on that side, and there aren't as many returning characters for people to throw their support behind. I've done a horrible thing making the gurus nominate Toadette, haven't I? I don't really see the problem with it - I think people were going to complain no matter who you picked. --- Z1mZum is the latest guru to destroy me in the Guru Contest. Congrats! What do you guys think are the odds for each of the big four (Mega Man, Sonic, Crono, and Snake) to win the male half? For me I think Snake has a 0% shot, since I see no evidence for him to be higher than the other 3. I think Sonic is next lowest, I'll give him a 10% shot since I see no evidence of him being stronger than Mega Man or Crono, he's had pretty much nothing this year (as has everyone else, but Sonics the one who needs to boost, not Mega Man or Crono, since they're already ahead of him). Unless you count Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Riders as something (although Sonic Rush was good IMO, apparently most think it's an average handheld). As far as I'm concerned Crono and MM are neck and neck at 45% each. I don't have much of a basis for this, I just think Crono will drop more than MM this year. Z1mZum, I respect your choice for Toadette! If Solid Snake had SSBB under his belt, he might have a shot at winning the male side of the bracket, actually. I say Sonic has just as good of a chance at Mega Man at the championship...he was pretty much even with MM last year. Not that games say much, but judging by the x-stats in the games contest I'd guess that if anything changed between them, Sonic caught up even more. The vote totals are higher than ever...let's see if Crono can manage to maintain himself. I figure he'd drop if anything, though. He won't grow in popularity forever. I'd say 45/30/25 between Crono, Mega Man, and Sonic respectively right now based on reasoning. If SSBB somehow gets released in time I'd change that to something like 35/20/15/30 (last number for Snake). With my pessimism I'd have to give a 100% chance that Crono will win, though. :/ --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. It could be fun! So...what is a party?" ^SSBB is slated to come out in 07, so unless CJay holds the bracket for about, 3 or 4 months, that's a moot point. Besides, even if it were slated to come out in time to make a difference, Sonic and Mega Man are the two most mentioned 3rd party characters other than Snake that might be in the game (I'd give them both a 50/50 shot), so they would also get a boost (not as much as Snake since they already have a Nintendo backing whereas Snake doesn't, but it would still be something). --- Z1mZum owned me in the guru contest (by two points!). For reference, here are their extrapolated values against Crono last year: Mega Man - 48.65 Sonic - 48.28 Snake - 46.36 I think it's foolish to say Snake has a 0% chance of winning. People have made bigger boosts than that before without us seeing it coming. Crono's also at risk of dropping, making it easier for Snake. Sonic and Mega Man vere nearly tied last year, so I don't think it makes much sense to give Mega Man 4.5 times as good a chance as Sonic. You're basically saying you think Mega Man has an 80% chance of beating Sonic in a rematch, which I don't buy. So I'd probably say something like: Crono - 34% Mega Man - 29% Sonic - 25% Snake - 10% Someone else - 2% --- Z1mZum is the latest guru to destroy me in the Guru Contest. Congrats! It's starting to look like we'll be having an Autumn Contest this time. Which means the Wii should come out during the contest. Awesome. Adds to the unpredictability of how some characters may or may not boost mid-contest, since there'll be a few launch games that will have people frequenting the site more than usual. Plus, it means more people will whine in the Stats topic when Nintendo dominates again. And I know I love laughing at you guys during those times, so it should be great. Of course, I still think Square's gonna dominate the female bracket besides Samus and maybe Zelda. I wouldn't be surprised even if Rydia won a match. Yeah, hype'll probably boost Snake up a bit. I'd give him a 5% chance
of winning, come to think of it. And, you're right about unpredictable
boosts. Random fact: Between SC2K2 and SC2K5 7 of the 9 Noble Niners increased in popularity...8 out of 9 if you count Snake.
