<insert "I'm back!" message here> I must say...it was worth leaving for a while. So, while we're discussing pic factor...I hope we can agree on one thing: pictures are more likely to affect game series than individual games, at least in certain cases. I think the reason is obvious, but if you don't understand...an FF series picture with Cloud on it would remind people strongly of FF7. an FF series picture with...Yuna on it would remind people strongly of FFX-2. Yet, I I think many series(') would give people the exact same impression regardless of the picture, especially if basically the same characters are used in all the games. I don't think many matches were affected by pic factor. Here's an interesting way of judging MGS's strength using closely-related matches and without using matches against FF7... -MGS went 50/50 with FFT -MGS2 received 43% against SSBM, which beat FFX with 51% (ignoring pic-factor). I think we can agree FFX > FFT, even if it's by less than the normal x-stats indicate. I think MGS would be lucky to have been stronger than MGS2 by even a small margin at that time, so I don't think they were horribly off from each other. That being a couple years ago, of course. As for Xenogears, I think it could do much better than most of us originally anticipated before SC2K6. Pokemon kinda shined this past contest...granted, RBY is probably significantly stronger than GSC (I could be wrong). --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. It could be fun! So...what is a party?" "Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think." |

Thing is, there's still plenty of room between FFX and MGS2, and if the
Top 100 List is a sign of anything, FFT is closer to FFX than MGS is to
MGS2. --- Z1mZum performed a hit and run on me in the Guru Contest. It still hurts to be rear-ended like that..... |

Which game based around a real person would do the best in a Games
Contest? The strongest I can think of would be 50 Cent: Bulletproof, or
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, but Shaq Fu might be a nice choice for
the upset. Is there anything else that could mount a good challenge? --- Pity for the Gurus is treason to Z1mZum. |

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (or some variation thereof) has to be it. NO
WAY does something like Bulletproof do anything, that's likely worse
than Madden level. Shaq Fu has the fad here going for it, but not much
else...although that might be enough given how weak any of these games
would be. --- Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace. These are codes of behavior. |

I'm not convinced Yuri is even as high as he looks in the adjusted
stats (yeah Samus, I'm doubting you after what I saw Shadow Hearts do
in the Series Contest). XIII probably has more playership here (though
it would hardly matter), his name is the name of his game, and while it
happens to be an FPS v. RPG setting, Shadow Hearts is just too obscure
to matter...I think. I'd take XIII just because I know Yuri is trash, but I wouldn't be completely happy about it. --- Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace. These are codes of behavior. |

It's a sign of more than what people give it credit for --
apparently, people would rather dispute the list than the general point
I'm making. Because the general point has to do with the list in question. And what exactly is it a sign of? stats (yeah Samus, I'm doubting you after what I saw Shadow Hearts do

Yup...remember how FF was supposed to beat LoZ after Round 1 since Diablo must be able to beat Civilization by more than 64%? Oh, and what is the matter with MGS2 at one time being stronger than MGS by 1%...? Well, I'd take MGS over MGS2 in a direct match no matter what year. This reminds of how people claim that Mario has to be barely above Samus in raw strength, while Samus can't be a touch above Mario. We all agree than Samus would've lost to Mario in 2K4, right? It's all about even a small amount of variance, which is silly to say there can't be any. Maybe this has been discussed before, but what's everyone's expectations on Samus in this upcoming contest, anyway? I really do wonder if Samus has gotten weaker since 2K4...it feels like it could be, though it would make no sense, considering we've had a few Metroid games since then. If she's retained her popularity, the contest should be almost a lock for Samus. --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. It could be fun! So...what is a party?" MGS: MGS2 is not a Mario/Samus situation. It's a Mario/Bowser situation. Thinking that MGS2 was ever, even for a second,
on the level of the original MGS is absurd. The vast majority of people
that I have seen even entertain the idea don't like the MGS games to
begin with (and thus have no concept of how the fanbase works). MGS2 is hated and reviled by so much of the original fanbase that it's almost funny. It's the reason why MGS3 had such a lackluster start in sales. If anything, the game probably does better the more time goes on thanks to the hate dying down. Of course, that hate doesn't stop the actual game from having decent strength, but neither would the hate Chrono Cross recieves, I imagine. And -- guess what? -- the only people who would entertain CC > CT have no grasp of the fanbase. And no, that would not change if we turned the clock back a few years. C'mon, people. MGS2 > MGS has never made sense. --- Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace. These are codes of behavior. |

And MGS2 wasn't '1%' above MGS in the SpC2k4 X-Stats. It was more like 4%. That's not trivial. That's a 55-45 loss. About the same as Mario/Samus, to be fair, but I've never trusted either of their SC2k4 stats. --- Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. be, though it would make no sense, considering we've had a few Metroid
games since then. If she's retained her popularity, the contest should
be almost a lock for Samus. One SFF match against Mario isn't going to all of a sudden make me question Samus. She beat down Frog, and handled Ganon like she was supposed to. Her strength should never be in question. The only thing that has been in question is her SFF ability. |

that. Ceej was pretty quick about getting the bracket and the contest
started. --- Squall, Tidus, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden Presea, Chun-Li, Tifa, Celes, Quistis, Amy Rose, Mei Ling |

iirc the nominations were just a couple weeks in 2k5, but we had to wait a couple more weeks for the bracket to be released. And I think will be getting a mid-September start since he usually gives us a month for predictions. Either the 11th or 18th --- Noms: Ken, Nightmare, Sub Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden(MGS), Knuckles, Sora Chun-Li, Morrigan, Sheena, Cammy, Presea, Talim, Ayane |

I wonder if the only reason Ceej opened nominations during the last
contest was so he could post that link on the poll results page. Personally, I would be quite happy if the contest didn't start until October 1, but I doubt we'll have to wait that long. Mid September seems likely, and September 1 still wouldn't surprise me (but he'd have to have the bracket out early next week). --- Z1mZum is the latest guru to destroy me in the Guru Contest. Pokemon RBY vs. Metroid on NES: what wins? Pokémon is a series that runs mostly on nostalgia. Vastly superior games are shunned just because they're newer.
