I do love the whole 'Noble Nine' mentality, though. "Yeah, I'd take Vincent over Bowser, real easy...but take him over SNAKE??? Man, F that, are you insane or something?!?!"

I support Vincent being the biggest non-Noble threat to Snake, honestly. FFVII/MGS SFF has proven to be rather severe, and I really can't see anything FFVII getting SFFed by anything other than FFVII. Vincent ain't getting on Snake's level indirectly in my mind, but looking at it from a perspective of rSFF, that match becomes a lot more interesting in my mind.

Heh, the opposite of what I was thinking :d I know I'm in the minority with that though.

Whatever works, right? At the end of the day, we can all agree that Vincent is a potential noble nine upsetter.

I do love the whole 'Noble Nine' mentality, though. "Yeah, I'd take Vincent over Bowser, real easy...but take him over SNAKE??? Man, F that, are you insane or something?!?!"

To be fair, the super crappy pic accounts for some Bowser overratedness, but yeah, in general, the "noble nine" thing is overrated.

I'm not referring to you specifically, it's more of a general statement...Vincent over Bowser has been the big discussion over the last topic or two, and yet you would think the discussion would focus on the man who has been the glaring weak link of the Noble Nine since the beginning of these contests. The upset would be much bigger, the arguments much more concrete ("even if Vincent rSFFed Crono, what's to stop him from rSFFing Vincent?!").The reason, of course, is that people think Vincent > Bowser is far more reasonable than Vincent > Snake thanks to NNNL (Noble Nine Never Loses!).

Meh, Noble Nine seems like it's going to endure forever anyway, even if Snake ends up losing this year. The boost from MGS4 and SSBB will likely make such a loss placed into the same status as Mario > Cloud. As in, "never happening again" status.

Last year, we were all predicting everyone to break the Noble Nine, with Tifa over Sonic, Vincent over Crono, and anyone in his division it seemed over Snake, and we were burned too badly to try it again. The Noble Nine has a better record than even Clinkeroth!

I agree that Snake is probably the weakest right at this moment, but in the long term Crono is most likely to be the first to fall, IMO. We'll see if he's any weaker in this contest.

Those were some pretty asinine predictions then. This year both Tifa and Vincent are far more likely to break the noble nine, and Snake will be on the edge of surviving this one last contest as a noble niner more than ever before (SSBB and MGS4 should put him safe for a good while), with characters like Bowser, Ganondorf, Vincent, Squall and Tifa breathing in his neck.

TIFA?? DUDE WTF!! Meh KH2 and AC could provide a nice surprise. Even though Zelda could beat her, she just doesn't have the same potential for this contest (unless it starts so late that TP will be messing things up).

I honestly wouldn't be too shocked if Crono takes a huge dive one of these years. We're coming up on a new console generation, which will definitely serve to bring in new and different pools of voters. It doesn't take much at all for that 45% from Vincent to turn into 49% from Bowser, and that would get everyone talking.

Also, if everyone wonders why I'm so quick to sing Bowser's praises, it's because I do, in large part, agree with Karma Hunter's theory of iconic characters holding an edge. As such, I view Bowser as the biggest threat to break through the Noble Nine in the upcoming years. Neither Vincent, Ganondorf, or Squall have the history and status in the gaming industry that Bowser has amassed. He may not be GameFAQs' villain, but he's video gaming's villain.

Honestly... just the Virtual Console by itself is worth buying a Wii for me. (I don't emulate, *****es) Considering I probably won't enjoy TP, as I've never been more than apathetic about any Zelda before, and I enjoy Metroid, though it's not a must have for me, and I'll still be getting it at launch.

I really hope Nintendo doesn't milk the Virtual Console prices. I'd be willing o pay $5 for a Super Nintendo game I really want to try out (say, Chrono Trigger), but I can't part with any more without feeling ripped off.

About Vincent potentially rSFF'ing Solid...do keep in mind that Aeris seemed to do normally against Solid in 2k2 and rose a lil' bit in 2k3. That would mean either her small role in KH boosted her a bit or Solid SFF'd her a bit (or random fluctuation, but where's the fun in that?). I take it that Vincent's stronger, sure, and we saw FF7 **** up MGS, but I wouldn't take it THAT far either -- and if so, not much at all.

Ah, so Chrono Trigger and Link to the Past are potential threats to the Ocarina of Time then?

Okay, I know this is from last topic and it probably even has been discussed to death, but after seeing this statement again, I HAVE to step in and say something. I wanted to say something last night, but then I went to bed.

Why do people automatically throw that FFVII SFF'ing Chrono Trigger means that Chrono Trigger is at Ocarina of Time's level? Last I checked, there was a significant gap between OoT and Chrono Trigger. Certainly enough for Chrono Trigger to have been SFF'd a tad and still lose to Ocarina of Time. And I absolutely can't stand how people are adamant that Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII don't share the same fanbase. Sure one might not be unproportionally preferred to the other, but come on now. They are arguably the two biggest Square RPGs. SURELY there must be a significant overlap of fanbases. And with that said, that means that any character relationship between them is fair game. Outside of Vincent/Crono, we've never seen how Chrono performs on one of the bigger Final Fantasy characters. For all we know, Crono gets hit by major SFF against Cloud or Sephiroth. Would Vincent overperforming on him seem so unlikely then? We simply don't have that info yet.

As for FFVII SFF'ing CT, what exactly says that it didn't? Like I said, there's still a 4-5% gap between CT and Ocarina of Time. And who's to say that CT couldn't have gotten 47 or 48% on OoT rather than the 45% it's expected to get? Does it really make anything seem out of whack in consequence? Let's speculate a bit. CT being SFF'd would bring the 8-bit and 16-bit divisions up. We saw Super Mario Bros. perform better than we thought against Final Fantasy. Maybe SMB3 was stronger than the x-stats show against FFVII... Is there anything wrong with the SNES games looking a couple percent stronger? Street Fighter did impress in the series contest. And perhaps we underestimated how much strength LttP really would bring to the LoZ series. I'm majorly speculating right now, but I'm just saying that there isn't really much that disputes that FFVII didn't SFF Chrono Trigger a tad.

So we bring the convo back to characters with Vincent overperforming on Chrono. Sure there's a decent argument for Vincent not overperforming, but I certainly am not taking "Final Fantasy VII didn't SFF Chrono Trigger" as a decent argument, especially when we're talking about characters between the two games. You're not going to tell me that they don't have an overlapping fanbase, because I know good and well that many of us here alone like both games.

Anyways, just wanted to bring out a point. Feel free to dispute it if you may!
NewLib | Posted 8/8/2006 2:54:54 PM | message detail
If that FFVII and CT match was anywhere else but the finals, FFVII wins by more.

Think Cloud/Sephiroth 2003 compared to Cloud/Sephiroth 2004. I dont know if the gap is at large, but its definitely larger.
