I wouldn't say that the overlaps hurt FF. I'd say it's more that each Zelda game has a huge fanbase that would allow it to stand on it's own without any other game in the series.

Hmm. Is it a fair assumption that FF7, not FF the series is the most powerful force in these contests? Could FF's massive overlap with everything have actually worked against it?

I would take the Zelda series over FF in a heartbeat. While FF does have FFVII, FFVI, FFX, and likely FFVIII, I don't see any Zelda being less than decently powerful.

I would take Chrono over SSB, myself. Unless you think SSB adds a crapload to the series, then I'm not sure why you would think it's able to beat Chrono without a problem. Chrono Trigger is safely ahead of SSBM in popularity -- there is no question who wins that match. Chrono Cross is certainly going to be weaker than SSB, but it's still going to be a strong game on its own too. It's not going to be a fodder game at all. The only series outside of the Big Three that I think has a really good shot at winning there is SSB.

True I don't see any of them as series (though KH does have 3 games now), but I did expect them to be in the contest. The differenece between those "series" and Chrono is that I expect them to become series in the future while Square has more or less abandon Chrono.

Yeah, but it's a series contest. It's almost irrelevant that SSB would be massively stronger than CC, and that CT isn't even safely above SSBM. Series aren't simply a sum of their games. This contest has clearly shown that voters actually take the series as a whole, and CC brings down Chrono a lot. Hell, look at charmander6000, who doesn't even consider it a real series. It's quite likely that many voters will feel this way, I think.

I guess I should elaborate further. To earn one's vote in a series contest as a 2 game series, one should generally like both games, or have played one expecting that they would like the other. With SSB, you have the very popular SSBM and the slightly-less-liked SSB. Most people probably don't like one and hate the other, they just like one more, because the series is fairly homogeneous.

This isn't the case with Chrono, though. Many avid fans of Chrono Trigger hate Chrono Chross. Even some the other way around, meaning that a lot of Chrono Chross's strength doesn't matter, because those people are far less likely to vote for it as a series.

This argument isn't anything new; it's the best explanation for Zelda beating FF.

It's possible against Final Fantasy. Look what Smash did against Mario. Heck, we're not even sure if it got SFF'D in that match. Maybe it did. Maybe Sonic actually took advantage of his iconic status and overperformed on Smash. We certainly don't have much concrete evidence one way or the other, so it's all speculation at this point. However, after Brawl, I don't think Super Smash Bros. will have much trouble escaping the doubling on anything sans Zelda.

Speaking of which, no way against Zelda. No way. It's too much of an SFF-machine.

Z1mZum beat me in July 2006 Guru contest (still not as good as winning the SC2K5, but close)

Yeah, SSB likely couldn't against LoZ -- LoZ:WW is much bigger to the Gamecube here than SMS, and LoZ:OoT is much bigger than SM64 (even if you count the DS port). Those two alone make it harder for SSB/M to stand, and LoZ:LttP > SMB3 while LoZ ~= SMW...

...yeah, it'd be an uphill stuggle for SSB to avoid the doubling.

Important X-Stats question!

As you'll remember, earlier this year we choose to adjust the stats for lolx to reflect the fact that Final Fantasy 7 was the most dominant force these Contests had ever seen. Since 2005 Link had just put up 54.56% on Base Link, we adjusted by making FF7 equal to 55.00% on BL. With Zelda having just taken down the FF series, it's clear that it needs to end up higher than FF7 alone. But how much higher?

If we adjust so that Final Fantasy Series = Final Fantasy 7, that gives us...

Zelda Series = 56.11%
Link = 54.56%
Ocarina = 50.80%

FF Series = 55.00%
FF7 = 55.00%
Cloud = 51.90%

Mario Series = 51.44%
Mario = 43.20%
Mario 3 = 43.89%

Sonic Series = 33.32% (SFFed by Melee?)
Sonic = 38.50%
Sonic 2 = 22.17%

MGS Series = 29.47% (looked unimpressive for some reason the whole contest?)
Snake = 36.97%
MGS2 = 35.77%

SSB Series = 39.35% (SFFed by Mario?)
Melee = 41.33%

Mega Man Series = 28.39% (I have no idea)
Mega Man = 38.79%

Hm... the last 4 seem to point to needing an upwards adjustment, but jeez, Mario looks like a monster already. I guess the other option would be to adjust so that SSB Series = Melee, but that seems risky considering how we don't know what kind of weirdness went on in that Mario/SSB matchup.

Of course they're separate entities, just like FF7 is different than Cloud. But people like to use lol x-stats to compare Link VS Ocarina and Mario VS Super Mario World and the like, just for fun, and now they're going to want to compare the MG series against MGS itself, and so forth. It's not serious business, I just want to be able to deliver numbers that make some sort of sense.

First off, SSB wouldn't be massively stronger than Chrono Cross. It'd be stronger, no doubt, but it isn't going to be by significant margins.

The idea that Chrono Cross brings down the series does not make much sense either. Chrono Cross does not bring the series down any more than Metal Gear Solid 2 brings Metal Gear down -- it doesn't. The hatred that people associate with Chrono Cross is viciously overrated. It has no more haters than your typical game.

Charmander also does not view the other games I mentioned (Halo, SSB, etc.) as series either. The mentality comes from there only being a couple of games in the series, but that certainly did not hurt SSB in the slightest. People not viewing it as a series would have nothing to do with the quality of the games.

This isn't the case with Chrono, though. Many avid fans of Chrono Trigger hate Chrono Chross. Even some the other way around, meaning that a lot of Chrono Chross's strength doesn't matter, because those people are far less likely to vote for it as a series.

Many people also love both of the games and the series as a whole. The idea that Cross is bringing in this hatred to taint the Chrono series is rather unfounded. There are people who hate it, sure, but they are not the majority or even close to it. What I have found through polls -- both new and old -- along with knowing about what we have seen of Chrono overall seems to tell me that it is going to be at least a top five series. SSB beating Chrono? Sure, I can understand that. Sonic beating Chrono? I don't see it happening.

Well, I ended the contest with a good score of 78. Only picks I missed were going with Halo and GTA. I should have known Castlevania would win only because anything related to Castlevania always screws up my bracket lol. I like the series so much that I'm usually biased towards it, so this time I went against it. The Plan got me again. :(
