I believe it. that's why Link keeps winning so decisively. Zelda is the site's favorite series, FF7 is the site's favorite game.

Agreed, but the final match was still a very close one (closer than any of the Link/Clouds by a good bit). I wonder how Zelda would have done had this match taken place two years ago.

Not much worse, if at all, than it did today. If Final Fantasy won two years ago, it would have been by very, very slim margins.

I think the match could be anywhere from a 55-45 Zelda to a 55-45 FF two years ago. People who expect the match to be exactly the same after two years are silly. Yeah, you, HM!

I'd lean towards the FF half of that though. I don't know how you couldn't... ff characters were doing better all over the place.

Not at all. FFVII wouldn't do much better/worse than it did on OoT before. It still wins without much trouble today.

I like saying this... but matches do change from year to year, often without any real reason. There are much more occurrences of rematches being off by more than an a few % than less, I'm sure.

Two years ago FF would have won by about as much as Zelda won this one.

But yeah, FF7 being the site's favorite game gives it more weight in this contest. It probably single handedly kept FF from being doubled tonight.

Oh... and in this case there actually is reason to believe one has increased.

Uh... I don't think I feel like it.. making that list. I'll just say what I remember from memory.

Snake/Knuckles: Same winner, but Knuckles ranged between 37 and 43 in his three showings.

Snake/Mega Man: Same winner, but Snake has gone from losing with ~47% to losing with about ~42%

Sonic/Samus: Once a 50/50 match, last time they met it was a 57/43.

Mega Man/Sephiroth: 50/50 match goes to a 60/40 slaughter.

Mario/Crono: Consistent from 2k2->2k3, but the then Crono wins 53-47... then Mario follows that up with a 53-47 win.

Link/Cloud: Oscillates between a 53 and 47 for either side.

Any others I'm forgetting? All of them had at least 5% shifts over the times they went against each other. And many of the rematches didn't really have any reason to have different results as far as game releases/"boosts" go.

This has been gone over already, but I'll chime in too.

Despite what many people's perceptions are, things are pretty balanced in these contests. 49% for the loser in a final is very balanced and is nothing compared to year-over-year volatility—frankly, month-over-month volatility could take care of that.

And regarding the next character contest, it's hard to conceive of Link losing - but remember, it was far, far more unthinkable that Link could lose in 2K3. And this very contest had an unexpected result, that while never dismissed, wasn't all that believed in until the Zelda/Metal Gear match.

Zelda dominance may seem inevitable now, but things change, and they'll change again.

Good post, creativename. I know most of us weren't here back then (and it was before the contests, anyway), but the Square dominance present on GameFAQs in 2000-2001 was far greater than what Nintendo has today. Things change, and they'll change again.

I think his role in SA2 really robbed Knux of his manhood, and therefore his support. He was suffering TJF, except TJF actually makes a character weaker rathre than stronger (as was once thought), and once a game came along that disassociated him from the worst parts of the game to the newest batch of kiddie to pick up the series he was back to normal.

Why? It's quite plausible to believe that the games themselves are still appreciated by similarly large groups. I'm certain the result doesn't change, at the least.

Oh yeah. I forgot about Black. I never did play that one.

Oh, and the original was pretty bad; The endings were pretty lame, and I seem to remember some of the characters having the same endings, which made it suck twice as much.

Oh, and the BOP file is updated to the end of the contest.

Fun facts:

- The final match was over twice as costly in point value as all other matches combined.

- It was also the 11th biggest upset.

- Finally, in terms of comparison of the board vs. overall bracket, this was our 13th worst match. Our best match this contest (19th all-time) was KH/Castlevania.
