Well, Square has, what, three games this generation that most Square fans can get behind? They rivaled Nintendo in the three previous generations because they put out so many games, and not just main series Final Fantasys, either. They really dropped the ball this generation in terms of quantity, for whatever reason. It's not terribly surprising that Square has been slipping on GameFAQs since 2k3, the year that the second big Square game came out.

You know, after seeing how high Mega Man X ended up ranking (relatively, of course), did it really get SFF'd by the Legend of Zelda? Or would it actually end up being stronger than Mega Man?

I think we all just need to take a breath and calm down. EVERY YEAR we go through the same "These contests have become hopelessly predictable; why should we have them anymore?" and then every year or so there's a shift and everything turns on it's head.

2003: Link will win easily. WRONG!

2004: After Cloud and FFVII won the last two contests why would Link have a shot at winning? WRONG!

2005: Other than Link winning, the last two years have been dominated by Square. Why would Nintendo start doing better? WRONG!

This happens time and time again. Nothing in these contests is predictable, and we've been learning that in every contest since 2003. Trust me, "NintendoFAQS" isn't gonna last forever.*

Hell, this has been the most unpredictable final since the first two contests, and probably one of the most exciting final matches we've had, and people are STILL complaining about being predictable.

Plus, I think it's hypocritical for some people who are complaining now to be rooting for Mario to win yesterday, but when Zelda turns around and beats FF, all anyone in this topic can say is "Waaah, NintendoFAQS." Make up your mind or stop complaining.

*Unless Wii totally revolutionizes the market or something.

if you want some guidelines, the follow games are underrated in the stats:

Metroid
Pokemon
Star Ocean
Kirby

Mega Man X
Suikoden

Weird Stuff happened to these:

Diablo
Warcraft
GTA

and that's only a guess. it could be that Mega Man X or Diablo is just that weak.

They really dropped the ball this generation in terms of quantity, for whatever reason. It's not terribly surprising that Square has been slipping on GameFAQs since 2k3, the year that the second big Square game came out.

But even now that Square has finally released another big game, things don't seem to be changing. And Final Fantasy XII probably won't change anything because of...well, the Wii.

Ulti, I'd give an honorable mention to Western RPG fans as well. They act as if any JRPG ever made is inferior to even the worst of Western RPGs. Every JRPG has a "terrible" story, "clichéd" characters, and a "menu-driven snorefest" for a battle system.

Yeah, but did Final Fantasy IX or Majora's Mask really change anything? It's obviously hard to tell, what with no contests before 2k2, but I'd argue against it, because of the impending PS2 (and GC). It's just too late for XII to make a significant difference, and four big games per generation is significantly under Square's average. I mean, they don't have any minor titles unless you want to count Enix's half, just two Final Fantasys and two Kingdom Hearts.

Yes, go back to your 1000th WRPG avatar who never speaks or has any form of development whatsoever. On the other hand, silent protagonists are quite rare in JRPGs nowadays.

WoW players is self-explanatory. Not only has the popularity of such a bad game completely ruined Blizzard (D3, SC2 and WC4 will probably all be terrible), but these people don't care. MMO players in general are the blight of gaming given that they're so obsessed with their escapist realities, but they don't even care. They put a black mark on the entire gaming community with their cyberaddiction.

I don't quite understand the hate of MMO players. The only thing I can see is that the games are so engrossing that you really don't have time for other games, but I still don't see how the hatred is self-explanatory.

You have cut/stall for about 30 minutes, and then ZOMG ZELDA SPIKE, and then right back to cut/stall.

I know, I was around for a decent bit of it, but FF was getting consistent cuts, even if they were slim. And Zelda's spikes usually weren't huge, like they are now. FF's spikes were only something like +30, which while comparitively big, wasn't as big considering FF was consistently cutting about 10 otherwise.

They really dropped the ball this generation in terms of quantity, for whatever reason.

They ran into some issues about midway through the generation -- merger with Enix being apart of that. But yeah, that is as good a reason as any right there. Square really wasn't on top of their game this generation. They had FFX at the beginning, then a few years until KH, then a few more years until KH2 and now FFXII here at the end. That about covers their big games throughout this generation. FFXII's six year development pretty much sums up how bad Square had things this generation. That is the longest FF development cycle in their history, I believe.

They do seem to be getting on the ball here recently, so if they can keep the games coming, hopefully GameFAQs goes back to being a bit more balanced.

I used to be very surprised at the MMO hate people had all the time. I always felt that these games were engrossing and incredible. I played RO for several years and have tried several other MMOs as well.

But then I looked back at what people were like in those games. Every 5 minutes in any of those games, someone would be trying to scam you or exploit you. If you were ever in a big city, everyone would be spamming useless spells to crash people with poor connections, hundreds of merchants would pollute the streets with overpriced merchandise, and dozens would chase you around asking for money. I guess at least it has a realistic feel, but it was still terribly stupid. This coupled with the cheaters, dupers and botters gave a terrible view of MMOs. Truthfully, I think it's just because of the size of these things. If the population of these MMOs could be restricted, I'm 100% sure the community would improve dramatically. Every MMO I've played in the Alpha/Beta stages never seem to have the problem of 10k idiots destroying the atmosphere.

The reason I loved RO so was because, although there was lameness all around me, I still managed to find a great group of players whom I've sticked with for years. That and my odd love for grinding levels at even the slowest pace...

I'd honestly like *more* Nintendo franchises to have some strength...things like Kirby seem to be simply unappreciated around here, and that's too bad. DKC could stand to see some popularity, and even the Star Fox games are some of my favorites (more than SF64?! BLASPHEMY).

And of course, the most underappreciated Nintendo game of all time...DIDDY KONG RACING.

(blah blah I know some of these are Rare, blah blah I don't care)

Strange as it seems, the more bad decisions Nintendo makes with third parties the stronger they'll probably grow on this site. Less third-pary support = more monopolizing from first-party titles, which means a more captive audience for Nintendo's contest heavy hitters.

The one wrench into the gears I'd love to see is Crono being in SSBB which leads to a new Chrono game for the DS.

I'd expect a gigantic boost there. Could Crono beat Link in that state cause I think he could beat Cloud and Seph.
MurderousNun | Posted 8/1/2006 2:55:25 PM | message detail
I think the people asking for complete balance are asking for a bit too much. It's very difficult for Square to give you that. Square will always, always be at a huge disadvantage in the Character Contests. Unlike Nintendo, they use different characters for each new Final Fantasy title. You produce more characters that way, but you don't necessarily produce more characters able to win matches. Cloud has been in, what, four games? Mario's been in about 200. This is not unfair, this is not bad, and this is not sad. It's simply the way things work.

Of course, the reality is that traditional Character Contests represent about half of all contests on GameFAQs. If Square can't win those, they have to win all the other "unique" contests CJayC cares to churn out. That's simply unrealistic.

They're surely at a disadvantage in terms of quantity, but GameFAQs is far more receptive to their games and their genre in general. Honestly, if Square were pumping out games on anything resembling a regular basis, they'd be completely fine here. The fact that the main character from FFVII along with a cameo in Kingdom Hearts can even be considered on the same level as Link -- let alone beat him -- is evidence that they'd be just fine if they actually returned to their former glory. What happened to new and inventive titles like Brave Fencer Musashi and Parasite Eve (the PE series produced a character that almost beat DK)? Why has it turned to cash cow milking in the form of FFXI rather than focusing on trying to give us the best games possible? Well, money, really, but that's never stopped Nintendo. Honestly, I'd love Square to be closer in terms of making a balanced contest, but they kinda deserve to be behind Nintendo right now.

Not that Nintendo isn't throwing out its fair share of bull**** right now, either. I'd go so far as to say companies like Namco are criminally underappreciated considering the quality of titles they're churning out presently.

Well, I think square did better than most do. Unlike people here on board 8 (but like much of the gaming population), I actually enjoyed FFTA and FFX-2, though I will admit FFX-2 wasn't as good as the original. For me, there were plenty of good squenix games coming out this generation:
FFX
FFTA
FFX-2
KH
KH2
FFXII looks awesome

For me, that's as good as the FFVII-IX trinity that Square did so well in the last generation. For spinofs they have:
Front Mission 4
FFCC
Star Ocean 3 (admittedly more Enix than Square)
DQVIII (ditto)
KH:CoM
Radiata Stories

There was a slight drop in quality, but not as much as a lot of people think IMO.
