I never got an answer. What made everyone so sure FF would win in
the first place? Regardless of how this match ends, what instilled this
confidence? I cannot, for the life of me, understand it. I tried very hard to convince myself that The Legend of Zelda would beat Final Fantasy pre-contest, but Final Fantasy VII/Ocarina of Time just wouldn't let me. That was just before Link ripped through SC2k4, too, so I figured that NintendoFAQs had already happened, or at least started. I also thought The Legend of Zelda would only be marginally stronger than Link, since he basically represents his series, while Final Fantasy had the potential to be quite a bit stronger than Cloud. It seemed clear that VII was stronger than Cloud, so I thought it would follow that the series would be noticeably stronger than VII. The contribution for fanbases of games other than FF7 being more substantial than the same for OoT, I'd think. I thought that might be it. I guess it's been a while since I've seen someone whine about how OoT sucked and LoZ is past its two dimensional prime, but I would imagine those people still exist in masse even if they aren't vocal anymore. Meanwhile, RPGs continue to be a relatively hardcore genre. FF has a lot of overlap in playership, particularly where FFVII is concerned. CompmanJX3: I was never exactly certain what the reason was for everyone's certainty that FF would win, anway. Did it all come down to FFVII beating OoT two years ago? If it did.... that's really awful reasoning, and if it didn't, what was it that made you all so sure? Despite the Nintendo Boost, like most, for me it was the "Final Fantasy gains more from its more diverse fanbase" theory. So many people love one Final Fantasy and hate FF7. Not so with Zelda. But, that doesn't seem to have panned out. ChichirMuyo: "The Elder Scrolls: 16.62% Diablo: 14.02%" Something is wrong. Something is very, very wrong. I blame the FF7 heavy picture against Diablo myself, as well as SF possibly being overrated due to Resicrap Evil. But obviously one can't say for sure. LordOfDabu: I'm glad nominations are on the poll results. I think it's a great idea. We only want the strongest characters... right? Yes...though I was still really hoping for Midgar Zolom :\ --- As the best poster in the stats topic, I move that we all stop acting like elitist know-it-alls about matches that aren't horribly obvious. |

I'll say this -- even if FF made the comeback (I deem it miraculous if
it does), there's no way I don't take Link > Cloud this year. None
at all -- we saw in 2k3 that the KHF was likely the big reason for all
the new success for the Square characters, especially Sephiroth and
Cloud (though we know what happened in Mario/Cloud). Now, this year,
KH2 and FF:AC are out and the two biggest games out this year so far
are RPGs, but those releases and that type of influx haven't stopped

Winners and Losers is going to be HELL to write today. So many series I don't know where to put... ...by the way, I STILL haven't voted yet. Sure, I'm really big on OoT and WW, but the rest... not so much. LttP? Damn good game, but not anywhere near any favorite list of mine. LoZ? Good in its time, but now only exists to highlight how much better LttP is. Zelda 2? Meh, didn't like the whole RPG twist much. Actually I think it's more that pre-contest we thought diversity was going to be a good thing, we also thought people were going to vote by "Oh man FF7 is my favorite game ever! *votes for FF*" or "Oh man Halo is such a sweet game! *votes for halo" and the like. Unfortunately we were wrong, and people actually tended to vote for the series they thought was better overall. The diversity in FF may hurt it as people might think "Man I loved FF7, but I hated 9, and 8 wasn't that good either, but the entire LoZ series kicked ass even if I do like FF7 better than any Zelda game "votes for LoZ." We were depending on diversity helping FF, while the lack of it seems to be helping LoZ and hurting FF. --- Explicit Content Cheer Up Emo Kids - Team Tranny Did! |

I think we over estimated how much FF4 and FF6 would help Final Fantasy. I thought that those two games would have bought an entirely new voting pool into Final Fantasy. Amazing its seems for many fans of them that didn't vote OOT over FF7, Alttp trumped both the snes FFs to put Zelda over FF. Plus, a one on one matchup with OOT and FF7 might have every different result now. The Nintendo gain is going full steam and with the success of the DS and the hype of the Wii (Which on this site is greater than the PS3 and 360 combined) I don't see it slowing down anytime soon. Don't be suprised if all the Nintendo characters over perform in the character contest. I'm definitely gonna keep that in mind when I make my bracket. |

My favourite FF game was Tactics. The rest were FAR too easy imo, and pathetically easy isn't what I enjoy in games usually. --- It's pitch black except for the light! |

Interestingly enough, we had a fair warning, with LttP clobbering FF6
in the top 10 list. FF6 was way behind the rest of the Super Seven,

I voted FFVII over OOT. But voting Zelda over FF was easy for me. Its not just Link to the Past is my favorite game, but Zelda hasnt had games that I outright hated like FFII and FFVIII. I think maybe the diversity of the games hurt FF. --- --NL-- Where am I? |

| FF7 still beats OoT. I don't think this Nintendo boost helps games, as much as they help characters and perhaps series'. People already played Oot and FF7, they are not gonna go back and suddenly change which game they liked better. OoT will never beat FF7. |

Still, we NEED another game contest at this point. Since it's fixed
that we'll have a character contest this fall, make it the next spring
contest, since we're having a specialty contest within a contest with
