I started out so well paying attention to everything too. And then? Work had to get hectic. Ugh. Anyway, looking forward to tomorrow. Even moreso to Tuesday. Kingdom Hearts disappointed me a lot; can't believe it couldn't do better than that against Metal Gear.

And for the fourth year running, I am clamoring for Frog/Magus, to finally put all of your heresy to rest.

I say you should use TP Link, Moltar. Then that would be an awesome pic. Best user pic I have seen so far, Even without TP Link.

Honestly, for all the wait we've had to endure for "Super Mario 128," the unveiling of Super Mario Galaxy was a bit...disappointing. Maybe it's just because I was expecting so much, but it didn't look like anything astounding. It might be one of those "You need to play it to understand what it's all about" things, which wouldn't surprise me with everything that the Wii does.

Mega Man won't necessarily be above Metal Gear. Final Fantasy could just squeak by and that would put Metal Gear ahead.

MG got 0.5% higher on Zelda than Megaman did on FF. Meaning FF would need to win by less than a margin of 50.25 - 49.75 for MG to be higher

Final Four: Match 30 – (1)Super Mario Bros. vs. (1)Final Fantasy

Moltar’s Analysis

Super Mario Bros. - Match Weapon: Fire Flower
Round 1 – 92.21% vs. Madden NFL (7.79%)
Round 2 – 81.13% vs. Warcraft (18.87%)
Round 3 – 61.76% vs. Super Smash Bros. (38.24%)

SSB surprises and does pretty well against SMB.

Final Fantasy - Match Weapon: Guys who look like girls
Round 1 – 85.98% vs. Diablo (14.02%)
Round 2 – 74.19% vs. Mega Man (25.81%)
Round 3 – 76.06% vs. Resident Evil (23.94%)

Final Fantasy beats Resident Evil worse than it did Mega Man

In the second match of the Final Four, we have our first meeting between the Big Three series of this tournament. This is exciting people! So exciting, I feel the need to look at these two series’ past matches!

In Round 1, both series looked very dominant, SMB dispatching of Madden with over 92% of the vote, while FF beat Diablo, who’s series isn’t even fodder, with nearly 86%. In the next round, SMB continued to look strong by getting 81% on Warcraft, which “upset” Grand Theft Auto before. However, Final Fantasy wasn’t fazed. In fact, it went to then nearly triple Mega Man and STILL get 100,000 votes in the match. I’d consider Mega Man one of the strongest series outside of the Big 3, so that’s quite impressive. Then in Round 3, SMB finally shows some weakness by letting SSB get 38% on it, in a match where most thought it would be SFFed into the ground. Final Fantasy continued to look impressive by getting 76% on Resident Evil, though most expected that.

And now we reach this match. Well, overall Final Fantasy has looked more impressive, and judging from what we have seen, it is the stronger series of the two. Most people figured that even before the Contest started. However, Super Mario Bros. should look pretty good in this match. This is good old-fashioned Nintendo vs. Square after all. Let’s break down the possible results.

FF beats SMB with over 60%: You might as well just give the tournament to Final Fantasy right there. I couldn’t see Zelda doing that without SFF.

FF beats SMB from anywhere between 55 and 60%: Respectable win, but doesn’t make it a lock over Zelda. I’d still consider it the favorite though.

FF beats SMB from anywhere between 50 and 55%: Final Fantasy isn’t looking good going into the Finals, and Zelda has a good chance to pull off the win from there.

SMB beats FF: Well…that’s just crazy talk! LoZ would then slaughter SMB in an SFF beatdown.

I think it will land in either the 1st or 2nd one. If you had asked me before the Contest, I probably would have said FF with around 60%, so things haven’t changed too much.

Moltar’s Bracket Says: Final Fantasy will win.

Moltar’s Prediction is: Super Mario Bros.: 40% - Final Fantasy: 60%

Ulti’s Analysis

Outside influence (ie, Tanya kind of wants me to go upstairs asap for reasons I'm not sharing with you people <_<) is forcing me to keep this short. Uh.... FF is the clear favorite, though I think Mario has a chance to perform well. Mario may not win outright, but I'm just hoping he breaks 44% so I can steal creativename's sig for a bit.

Prediction: FF with 55.99%

Soul’s Analysis

Mario defeated Super Smash Bros. with 61.76%
FF defeated Resident Evil with 76.06%

Two matches remaining. Three of the strongest competitors remaining. Now it's time to bring it down to two.

There is no doubt that Mario is part of the three strongest series in this contest. Mario has been on a spree lately, with only one disappointing win. It was the only series to put up a 90%+ performance against the jobber known as Madden, then went on to defeat Warcraft (which is about equal to GTA!) with over 81% of the vote! The disappointing win came at the hands of SSB because Mario only got 61% against it. But SSB is most likely the fourth strongest series in this contest (screw you MG). Hell, SSB even got 57% on SONIC! SSB was packing major heat, but Mario extinguished it pretty easily. It wasn't the 70%+ win that a lot of us predicted, but it was still a strong showing nonetheless.

Final Fantasy started this contest as the statistical favorite to win it all. During the first two rounds, it continued to look that way. It blasted out of the gate with an 86% performance on Diablo, and followed suit with a 74% win over the very tough Mega Man. After those two matches, it slipped. Facing a relatively easy third round match in Resident Evil, FF was only able to score 76% on it. That's pretty startling if you took FF to win it all, but is it bad enough to make FF lose to Mario?

Unlikely. I mean, Mario has a small chance at winning, but FF is the vast favorite in this one. In character contests, the top three involves LoZ and Final Fantasy. Villains contest it was FF and LoZ. Games it was FF and LoZ. Basically, Mario is strong enough to hang around with them, but not strong enough to actually beat them.

Also, Diablo > Warcraft. No one should ever doubt me on this again!

My prediction: Final Fantasy wins with 58.95% of the vote.

Leon’s Analysis

Ahh, finally, the climactic showdown between Super Mario Brothers and Final Fantasy…isn’t looking to be that exciting at all. Really, the only reason to believe that Mario even has a chance to win (or ever had a chance, even before this contest) is the same reason that people have been taking him to win contests from the beginning: “Because it’s MARIO!” Okay, that may hold water against Samus, but Final Fantasy is an entirely differently ballgame. Even after Mario had finished a dominating run through the SC2K5 bracket, Sephiroth humbled him right from the beginning, holding him to two update wins that don’t even total 10 votes and one tied update. Yeah, that’s the power of Final Fantasy, folks.

As much as Super Mario Brothers may “deserve” to win this match, it ain’t gonna happen. Sure, it may be head and shoulders above the rest of the field, but it’s still a notch below the two big dogs. It’s already got a 60/40 disadvantage between its strongest game and Final Fantasy’s strongest game, and Final Fantasy VI isn’t that far behind Super Mario Brothers 3 either. Plus, there’s the very real possibility that you get to Final Fantasy’s third (or maybe even fourth, depending on what you think of Final Fantasy VIII) strongest game before you get to Mario’s second strongest.

The contest performances don’t speak too highly of Super Mario Brothers’s chances either, regardless of what others may say. Sure, it got the biggest blowout of the contest against Madden, but come on…It’s Madden. Nobody on GameFAQs cares about sports. Plus, Final Fantasy did much better on a Blizzard franchise, and regardless of what people say, I can’t see Warcraft being much stronger than Diablo. Honestly, if it weren’t for the rallying factor, I’m not so sure it’d be stronger at all. Warcraft has to be worth 60%+ on Diablo for Super Mario Brothers to win, and…I can’t see that.

Of course, as others say, “measuring through fodder” isn’t always a fruitful enterprise (I don’t necessarily agree, but I’ll let it slide), so let’s look at their matches against the stronger foes. Final Fantasy came close to tripling Mega Man, which should be the sixth or seventh strongest series at worst and did even better against Resident Evil, which has some strength in its own right. Super Mario Brothers, on the other hand, as an entire series couldn’t even outdo what Final Fantasy VII as a single game did against Super Smash Brothers. I’ll grant some leeway in the idea that Super Smash Brothers is noticeably stronger than just Melee, and that the series has grown in strength since 2004, but the point stands.

And here’s the thing: Super Smash Brothers has to get 66.25% on Mega Man for Super Mario Brothers just to be equal to Final Fantasy. Feel free to think that, if you’d like, but I don’t see it even breaking 60% there. Sonic the Hedgehog would have to get 60.15% on Mega Man for those two to be equal, and I find that to be highly unlikely as well. Sonic and Mega Man are more likely to be equals, in my opinion. Yeah, I know, people want to say that the stats for this contest are going to be worthless, and for the most part that’s true, but I think these particular numbers hold water. Diablo/Warcraft and Sonic/Mega Man both point to 60%+ wins for Final Fantasy, in my opinion, and if you think that Super Smash Brothers suffered SFF against Super Mario Brothers, the gap only widens.

Good luck, Mario. You’re gonna need all you can get here.

Final Fantasy – 76.06% -- 103,552

Looks like we finally get to witness a match between the Big Three. People have been entertaining the idea of Super Mario Bros. upsetting Final Fantasy since the contest was originally announced. The interesting part was it actually didn’t look that bad in the beginning. SMB came out with a monstrous blowout of Madden NFL that turned quite a few heads, even if it was just Madden. Then it turned around and had a somewhat comparable blowout against Warcraft. But it wasn’t until SMB’s match against SSB that is showed its vulnerability. Final Fantasy? Yeah, it continued its scary dominating.

In the last round, Super Mario Bros. got “exposed,” you could say. It was the first time we have ever seen one of the Big Three show signs of weakness. This was more than just a chink in the armor; this was something that could put doubt in SMB’s ability to hang with Final Fantasy and Zelda. The fact that it barely managed to do better than Final Fantasy VII did against Super Smash Bros. Melee should speak for itself. SMB’s chances in this match are practically zero. Everything we have seen so far points to Final Fantasy winning and with absolute ease.

On Final Fantasy’s side, it continued to do its thing by more than tripling Resident Evil. It may have been somewhat under people’s expectations who were expecting an 80%+ SFFing or whatever, but still an impressive performance. Interestingly, Final Fantasy’s most impressive performance of the entire contest may have been in round 1 – the only round where Cloud was present in the picture. No doubt that Mega Man and Resident Evil may be stronger series, but you have to wonder if Cloud being in the picture could affect things a bit in the percentage. After all, Cloud is the star of Final Fantasy – the only character to ever defeat Link.

Final Fantasy should have no problem taking care of Super Mario Bros. here. Nothing has pointed to SMB being able to hang with Final Fantasy. Each round, Final Fantasy has been more impressive, more domineering, and easily the scarier of the two. From the looks of it, Final Fantasy has a real claim to being the absolute peak of contest performance. We are not likely to see anything stronger than this beast here. The same beast that was able to put up 100,000+ individual votes when getting 74% against Mega Man.

Personally, I was always hoping that Final Fantasy could put up a 60%+ performance against SMB when the two faced off. I expected there to be a sizable gap between the two and I expect Final Fantasy to get the championship with 55% of the vote. The gap between Zelda and Mario should be enough there for Final Fantasy to snatch up 60%, I think. It only helps that SMB had a rather poor performance against SSB the previous round.

Wow, what a picture; Mario looks awesome in both the foreground and background pics. Final Fantasy, on the other hand, has a not-so-recognizable generic character and a female whose game hasn't even been released in the US. Advantage: Super Mario Bros.

Unfortunately, whatever advantage Mario can muster here won't really matter. As strong as he is, FF has always been one of the two strongest entities on this site, and up until very recently (like, a few days ago), most people would have called it the strongest without hesitation. Not only does it have the biggest game in GameFAQs history, but it's loaded with other popular games from every console generation. Final Fantasy will win the match, of course, but this is Mario's chance to overperform, thereby causing our anticipated final to look very interesting. Will he do it? I sure hope so.

Super Mario Bros.
+ Several games from which to draw popularity
+ Most of those games are pretty damn strong in their own right
+ Most recognized series in gaming history
+ Broke Warcraft over its knee
- Disappointing performance last round
- Simply isn't strong enough

Final Fantasy
+ Strongest game on this site
+ Several other very popular games
+ Spans several consoles and eras
+ It's the backbone of GameFAQs
+ Credibility up the wazoo
- Nothing

My prediction: Final Fantasy def. Super Mario Bros. (56-44)

Mnm’s Analysis

Battle Music: Bowser Fight (SMRPG)

Final Fantasy! Prepare yourself for the great beyond!

Okay, I've said since the beginning that I expect SMB to bring the fight to Final Fantasy, and I'm not changing my stance on that. Sure, Super Mario Bros. may have looked a little human against SSB (which is no slouch) mind you, but that doesn't change my thoughts. I could care less that SMB doing well against FF makes SSB look like a powerhouse in the X-stats. I could care less what these X-stats look like anyways. This is friggin' Super Mario Bros. vs. Final Fantasy. I just don't see SMB simply rolling over to Final Fantasy like everybody thinks.

This is reminiscent of last year's Spring Contest where everyone expected Sephiroth to roll over Bowser and Ganondorf, with the Nintendo duo then surprising everyone by breaking 40% on Seph. And I'll tell you that SMB and LoZ are totally different beasts than Bowser and Ganon. I said before that I expected SMB to get between 43-45% on FF, and I'm sticking with it!

Bracket: FF
Vote: SMB
Prediction: Final Fantasy with 55.75%

HaRRich’s Analysis

Predicted winner: Final Fantasy
Earlier this contest:
---SMB - 92.21% on Madden NFL, 81.13% on Warcraft, 61.76% on Super Smash Bros.
---FF - 85.98% on Diablo, 74.19% on Mega Man, 76.06% on Resident Evil
Top 100 List comparison:
---SMB3 - #5, SM64 - #13, SMB - #22, SMW - #23, SMW2:YI - #82
---FF7 - #1, FF3/6 - #10, FFX - #12, FF8 - #17, FFT - #19, FF9 - #42, FF2/4 - #50, FF - #76, FFTA - #89
Best Game Ever x-stat comparison:
---SMB3 - 39.9% (8 Division champion), SMW - 34.24%, SM64 - 21.93% (SFF'd by LoZ:OoT, has since had SM64DS released)
---FF7 - 50% (Best. Game. Ever. champion), FF3/6 - 39.4%, FFX - 36.86%, FF - 32.24%, FFT - 28.69% (was behind FF7/MGS), FFTA - 24.27% (SFF'd by FFX)

FF has hardly shown any signs of weakness...and SMB showed weakness last round in what was supposed to be an SFF match. I would consider Diablo to probably be no weaker than 45% against Warcraft (head-to-head), and it's a tough sell that SMB would indirectly double Mega Man (I'd expect more like 65-35), so those two spell trouble for SMB. I also think that, should SMB break 40%, that LoZ would become the deserving favorite in the championship -- we have a Nintendo-series poll (from 2001, unfortunately) that features LoZ getting 50.05% against every other Nintendo franchise at the time (Mario had 24.4%), Mario got 37.47% against Link in 2k2, Mario is expected to get 39.59% against Link in 2k5, LoZ has two games that are bigger than any Mario game, and LoZ has the only game that can compete with FF7. We'll see what happens, of course, but FF needs to impress despite already impressing all contest long.

Lopen’s Analysis

When the bracket first came out, I was thinking... Final Fantasy has this thing in the bag. After all, Final Fantasy 7 is supposedly considered the best game of all time by a good quarter of the website? And then you've got Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 10, and even the original Final Fantasy that have proven themselves as no laughing matter in the contests. And most of the rest probably aren't slouches either.

As round 1 wore on, though… I started to have my doubts. What a silly time to have doubts, right? When Final Fantasy beat the holy hell out of Diablo. But I said to myself… "no, Mario could about match this, I think". And so, I called for Mario to get 80%+ on Warcraft… and it did! It too smashed the tar out of a game I'd felt was a worthy competitor… well, after beating GTA anyway. Oh, sure, it wasn't 85%… but just being capable of getting into absurdly high numbers against something I wouldn't call fodder, it says Mario's coming to play. A blowout is a blowout… people can say 85% on Squall is that much better than 82% on Squall, but I just don't think so. This is enough for me. And who knows? Maybe GTA/WC actually are that much more popular than Diablo, to satisfy the extrapolaters out there? It's possible. I'd have definitely taken GTA over RE before the contest... would I have been the only one?

Ah, but that was round 2. What about round 3, you ask? Well… that's a bit… Mario just didn't do what I wanted to really inspire confidence, there. Oh, there's no doubt that Super Smash Brothers is a very popular series here… but even so, I expected more than what Mario gave. It was a… discouraging performance. I think Final Fantasy 7 might have outdone what the entire SMB series did against SSBM. But, is this in and of itself condemning? Well, no… SSB isn't nothing… the series is more than just SSBM. And, it's also likely that the Smash series has gained some steam over the years. Still, I was disappointed. SSB might be the fourth most popular series on the site… but is it that much more popular than Mega Man or Metal Gear?

But then again… I've been saying it for a while, I think extrapolation is all but worthless in this thing. The voting is just weird. Hell, maybe Smash reverse SFFed Mario? You never know… maybe the Nintendo fans wanted to see a shake up? Maybe SSB got pity votes because people were sure it was going to lose? I don't know… basically what I'm saying is, I'm not thinking this one seemingly subpar performance spells doom for Mario.

As the match grows closer, something inside is telling me Mario still has a chance. I don't have as much logic as I'd like behind it, either. The main thing I keep thinking of is this old saying, and it goes as so: "It's freaking Mario!". It worked against Samus… but then again, it doesn't work against Cloud or Sephiroth, some fools from one Final Fantasy game. Super Mario Brothers 3, almost certainly the most popular of the games… it gets upstaged by Final Fantasy 7 with ease.

Not to say Mario doesn't have some advantages of his own. He definitely owns the "NES era" of games. Age is in his corner, no doubt. He's also got a decisive edge in the portable area. And what other series can claim that 99% of GameFAQs has played one of their games in Super Mario Brothers 3? The picture also favors Mario, pretty heavily, I'd say, for whatever that's worth (but at least it's not Vaan!). Also, remember last year's villain contest where Sephiroth did much worse than expected on Ganondorf and Bowser? People might just anti-vote the "obvious champion" (yes I do think this is what happened with Dorf/Bowser) with the finals being so close. Oh, but that's not all… prepare to scream at me now, I've got one last interesting theory in me yet!

Were I to objectively call a series the "best ever", I'd just have to give it to Super Mario Brothers. I can't do that for characters, or even games, but for series, the "objective choice" leaps out at me! Am I the only one that thinks this? I doubt it. Sure, it's a popularity contest, but maybe at least some people will be corrupted by this way of thinking? "Super Mario Brothers "deserves" to win"? If any competitor in one of these things is ever going to get votes based on that idea, it's right here.

Do I really think it's going to win? Am I just trying to inject hype into a match which is sadly "obvious"? Just trying to give all of those Mario pickers out there a bit of hope? Tainted beyond repair by wishful thinking? I'm really not sure, anymore. All I know is right now, I see Mario as the bigger threat than Zelda for FF. It's just got a little something extra that transcends "Games X, Y, and Z from Series A are more popular than Games 7, 8, and 9 from Series 2". And Mario'll need that to win, as Final Fantasy clearly has the advantage in that game, against all comers (over you too, Zelda).

Either way, I think this match is gonna be surprisingly close. And so I figure… I could predict Final Fantasy with 51%… but why not just go all the way? What's the difference? Yeah, my bracket has FF, but I wish it had Mario… and not just because I'm down 8 points! I really do think the upset could pay off. Fight, Mario! Eliminate the perfects! You're our only hope!

Lopen's Prediction: Super Mario Brothers with 50.05%

And if it does, Then this site will hit a new low.

From somebody who picked FF to break 60% here, there is no lower low than Sephiroth breaking 60% on Mario, and Final Fantasy breaking 60% doesn't particularly bother me.

Sure, Mario deserves a lot of credit for saving the console industry and revolutionizing video games as we know it, but that doesn't mean it's deserving of being the best series ever. Don't get me wrong. I love Mario and I understand the impact that it's had. I just don't think that's reason enough to call it the best series ever.

I dunno... I'm starting to like FF as a series less and less as time passes by. In fact, as this contest has passed, I found myself voting against Final Fantasy a lot of times when I theoretically should have been voting for it based on my favorite games list. Maybe frequenting this site and seeing how people worship the games has made me like the series less, although my love for RPGs has been dwindling for a while now... I don't even want to touch FFVI for fear that I will like the game less than the last time I played it. Same for FFVII and FFIX.

The Mario series will never die for me though!

Yeah, I agree. I'm still more impressed with the concept and potential of the Wii than any of the games they've shown for it.

That said, I don't think hype for FFXII and FFXIII are really very strong. I attribute some of this to just my personal apathy towards either, but, the game is out in Japan, and, judging by this board/lack of news from anywhere else, it just seems to be adequate but not extraordinary. When KH2 came out earlier in Japan, there was still this sense of a really good game being just beyond the horizon, and I think it was easier to pick up the hype for it. As for FFXIII, there's as much hype for it as there can be for a game not coming out soon with a very short, sort of generic cool looking trailer.

It's been suggested that people vote for Mega Man as if all of his series are the same...could people be doing the same thing with Mario? Considering Mario Kart, Mario RPGs, Mario Sports, and Smash Bros. to all fall under the "Super Mario Bros." umbrella? If so, that could explain Mario's poor performance against SSB.

Whenever news does come along, you'll often find Final Fantasy XII at the top of nearly every website's most visited page. There may not be news released often since it has come out in Japan, but there is definitely hype there. And FFXIII was one of the most hyped games to come out of E3, exceeding SMG on pretty much every website that tracked that thing of thing (GameSpot, 1UP, GameStats, etc.)

Well, after the first two Mario/Cronos, a few slips of the tongue ("though I don't give it a snowball's chance against Mario"), and some of the most one-sided match pictures in history, does anyone not think Ceej is a total Mario fanboy now?

I get the feeling maybe he's pissed about the SSB debacle or something.

I'm sure Ceej doesn't think of himself as Mario biased, but actions are what matter, not intent. He does have a history of shadiness when it comes to Mario.

The picture is bad for my 56% bet, but I still think Final Fantasy might push 60%. The way I see it, Sephiroth's 56% on Mario in 2K5 should be the lower bound for what Final Fantasy gets here. (but you never know)

Speaking of which, Ulti, your thoughts on it being a bet for 3 nom slots for the first contest after the next one, rather than a sig bet?

I'd say the current hype for Final Fantasy XII is much greater than for Super Mario Galaxy. I haven't seen much hype for SMG.

Though Galaxy will probably end up with higher sales.

I think FFXII will be sort of like FF9, because I see it overshadowed by FFX. However it should have more relative success compared to FFX than FF9 did compared to 7 and 8, I think. I expect the characters to be significantly stronger than 9, but weaker than 10.
