From Sir Crono | Posted 7/29/2006 8:52:46 PM | #199
We've already seen that "merit" doesn't mean crap here. If it did, Sephiroth wouldn't have thrown Mario around like a ragdoll after two months of dominating SC2K5.

Exactly. I'm absolutely confused at why people are giving any credit to Mario for what he accomplished last year.

I mean, at least Sephiroth is the most popular villain. Mario is... the most popular character that's not Clinkeroth. That's pretty damn arbitrary to me, and IMO it holds as much value as "best character with a name that starts with M".

Eh? What merit does Mario the character have? Mario's a good character in ONE game (SMRPG (I haven't played PM/PM2/PiT)), but other than that Sephiroth blows him away. It still blows my mind that people like Nintendo characters so much, since they're so lacking in development.

Funny, development is the LAST thing I look at when it comes to liking a character.

And it's not always a good thing anyway. I loathe a good chunk of the FF7 cast, for instance (Sephiroth included).

The merit of being the Mario who stars in the Super Mario Brothers series. That's really all he needs. Do you really think Cloud and Sephiroth are popular because of their great development?

While we're on the subject of FF7, I'd just like to mention that for a game with so many villains, only Rufus struck me as something to really appreciate. In fact, I'm amazed at how the game is a huge mixed bag in terms of cast and yet manages to be so good. It's dumbfounding.

Only characters in it that I really liked were Red XIII, Tifa, Rufus, and the Turks.

Match XXIX: (1) The Legend of Zelda vs. (1) Metal Gear

Past Matches

The Legend of Zelda
Defeated Civilization, 89.97% - 10.03%
Defeated Mega Man X, 80.32% - 19.68%
Defeated Metroid, 84.70% - 15.30%

Metal Gear
Defeated Soul Calibur, 69.89% - 30.11%
Defeated Fire Emblem, 65.23% - 34.77%
Defeated Kingdom Hearts, 58.31% - 41.69%

Analysis:

Even in a SFF match everyone is expecting LoZ manages to impress. LoZ was able to make Metroid look pathetic and is managed to score over 114k votes. LoZ has become the only series left to not get below 80%. On the other hand Metal Gear is also the only series left that has let an opponent break 40% on it. Metal Gear had little trouble beating Kingdom Hearts and now it’s become a two horse race for fourth, but to get it Metal Gear must impress.

Metal Gear wins the division that didn’t include a member of the Big 3, but now it comes face to face with one of them and it doesn’t have a chance in the world. Most people one the board thought Metal Gear would have the best chance at getting fourth, but that was about it and Metal Gear hasn’t shown that it is capable of getting any higher than fourth and after Super Smash Bros.’s performance it might have to settle for fifth.

The FF/SMB match can go very differently depending on how well Metal Gear performs tomorrow. If it is avoiding a doubling and performing better than expected it means that the Big 3 isn’t as dominate as we thought. Many of the strong series were put into Metal Gear’s division with the big exception of SSB.

The Legend of Zelda has yet to show its weakness, but I think Metal Gear will show that The Legend of Zelda can be defeated. This will be the first time this contest that Zelda will fall below 80%, but I think Metal Gear has the strength of breaking 30% tomorrow.

charmander6000’s Bracket: The Legend of Zelda over Metal Gear

charmander6000’s Prediction: The Legend of Zelda wins, 69.52% - 30.48%

I really do think Cloud and Sephiroth wouldn't be as popular if they didn't have the personalities that they have. I don't think Final Fantasy VII would be as popular, for that matter. A fourth of the site considers it the best game of all time, and I'm betting that the story and characters are a BIG part of that reason to many.

And I didn't expect Final Fantasy to stop at 76%. I never would have expected Street Fighter to be this close to Mega Man. Even with pic factor, you have to give it some credit here. Street Fighter could have done some real damage with a better draw (like sticking it in Metroid's half-division).

Zelda actually fell a bit short of my expectations on Metroid (as in it didn't *quite* break 85%). If Zelda can triple Metal Gear, Final Fantasy is in some serious trouble (which is what Zelda supporters are hoping for, but that's the problem).

MMX would kill every other game in its series head to head. There's no question.

That being said, none could beat RE4. The match isn't a good one.

Say what you will about FFVIII, but I can't see it being weaker than FFT, and I'd wager it being stronger than FFX. Either way, RE4 ain't touching that. Plus FF8 has all the intangibles working for it. I'd be stunned if it lost.

Again, underestimating Pokemon, sure, I can deal with it. But what series would you honestly take Pokemon over? Here's a list of series that I would *not* take Pokemon over (big three excluded):

Mega Man X
Metal Gear
Castlevania
Halo
Kingdom Hearts
Sonic
Super Smash Brothers
Mega Man
Mario Kart
Street Fighter
Resident Evil

I would take (at least) all these series over Pokemon, and would also take them all over Metroid (with the possible exception of Halo). That's hardly inspiring.

Round 3 – 58.31% vs. Kingdom Hearts (41.69%)

Metal Gear has no trouble with Kingdom Hearts.

Well, an all 1-seed final four. Surprisingly enough, we’ve never had one before. Let’s see how this turns out.

In the first match of the Final Four, Legend of Zelda, aka “The Series that blows out things” takes on Metal Gear. So far, Metal Gear hasn’t been all that impressive. A good win over SC, an unimpressive win over FE, and a respectable win over KH. Legend of Zelda? Well, it hasn’t failed to shock the heck out of us yet.

Needless to say, Zelda’s free trip to the finals continues, as Metal Gear is just another victim in its path. At least Metal Gear should do much better than Zelda’s previous three opponents, seeing as how it does have quite a bit of strength and isn’t from Nintendo. I’d consider 30% good enough and if MG can escape the doubling, well, that’s a moral victory.

Moltar’s Bracket Says: Legend of Zelda will win.

Moltar’s Prediction is: Legend of Zelda: 68% - Metal Gear: 32%

FINAL FOUR HOLY ****!

And what an unpredictable final four we have here as well! >_>

Yeah, ok, I'm lying. This final four was very, very easy to call. All the top seeds advanced to the elite eight, and all the number 1 seeds advanced to the final four. BORING!

By the looks of things, we have one more match that could be interesting. This isn't it. Wait..... No, it isn't.

Metal Gear is looking like the fourth strongest series in this contest, but there is a huge gap between third and fourth. Zelda would be the second, and there's a pretty wide gap between second and third as well. Basically, there's a huge gap between second and fourth. Don't believe me? Let me show you it in a diagram.

Final Fantasy (first) > Legend of Zelda (second) >>> Super Mario Bros. (third) >>>>>>>>>>> Metal Gear (fourth).

Need another diagram?

Basically, by my proof, it's quite apparent that Legend of Zelda will win this match easily. What? You say you wanted a good match? Sorry bro/sis, but you're looking at the wrong place. Come back in a couple of days.

My prediction: Legend of Zelda wins in a boring match. And LoZ does it with 68.79% of the vote.
