That's not my biggest concern - a Link/Samus SFF beatdown is.

With only 16 females you could have Cloud's quarter of the bracket next to the ladies, at least.

You mean Mega Man/Samus, but it's still depressing!

This is also why I have a hard time seeing there be no ToC. Is the final battle of the contest really going to be Link/Samus?

..okay, I take it back. Tag-teams wouldn't be that great either, but they'd certainly be better than anything else I've seen suggested, for reasons that have already been expressed. This twist is either going to give us a sucky contest or - if Ceej is really thinking out of the box and we're not - blow our minds. I'm leaning toward the former, but still holding out hope for the latter.

If there's 16 females, how would they male section work? The semi-finals would have 3 people left.

That's not my biggest concern - a Link/Samus SFF beatdown is.

That is one of the reasons that I don't want Link/Cloud/Sephiroth/Mario included if he is going to make two different "sides" with males and females. Link/Cloud v. Samus sucks. Hard.

Slowflake | Posted 7/29/2006 7:54:30 AM | message detail
Okay. Let me try to explain it differently.

The quarterfinals could go like this: Link vs. Crono, Sephiroth vs. Megaman, Cloud vs. Mario, Samus vs. whoever. Then Link and Sephiroth face off, and after that Cloud and Samus. Link/Cloud in the finals.

Oh, I get it.

The 3 finalists go into the ToC. And only the winner of the female bracket goes into the ToC.

That could work

Yeah. And including those four in a field of 32? Just imagining that sucks.

You'd be surprised at how many nublets are creaming their pants at the idea of all the strong characters being stuck together in the name of "giving someone else a chance for a change".

I don't think I can possibly make it more simple. Supposing a 4x16 layout, we have three male divisions, and a female division. The female winner (Samus) goes against (loses to) whoever wins the third male division, then the latter goes on to fight in the finals against another male.

If you don't understand, there's a big problem.

Maybe I'm just being too lazy to put it all toghether....but still....

Well since then, Leon made his way to the PS2 with RE4, I think Kirby got a boost from Canvas Curse last year. He might have slipped a little this year. I was just thinking of it.

48-16 isn't an assumption, just a suggestion. It would make for a much better bracket, and if done right prevent an SFF beatdown in the finals.

I would rather him just combine the two and feature the sixty-four most nominated characters, regardless of their gender. I don't like the idea of having a pre-set amount of women in the contest, nor do I like the idea of part of the bracket being reserved for the women. I just think it'd be a good way to get some worthy new-blood in the contest.

I still don't think that's enough....I suppose it's a point, but there's no way I'd take that risk if Leon and Kirby were to face each other in SC2K6.

And, I don't think Kirby's the type of character to fall from grace like that. =\

No, he didn't mention the ToC. But the way he worded how they were guaranteed spots, as well as saying "this year's twist" when referring to the whole gender thing, it doesn't look like we're having one this year.

Thank goodness. If there's one, I'm outta here.

If you're so opposed to it, you should have signed my petition!

I'm not as optimistic as you about the wording - personally, I think we're likely to get another TOC.

For all we know, the bracket format won't be anything specific, and this is just a way to boost female nominations.

Maybe, but then this poses the issue of people nominating Samus/Tifa/Aeris/Zelda just because they can't think of anything else worthwhile. You'd basically get the same thing on your hands as Halo and Phantasy Star in the game contest.

But I seriously doubt it'll be a regular bracket. CJayC did mention there'd be a twist, after all.

Well CJayC said the twist would be "readily apparent"

In other words, obvious. But if everyone's debating it, there's something we're not seeing here. If this twist is indeed supposed to be obvious just from seeing the nom form, then it wouldn't be foolish to assume that said twist is merely the nom form itself

I meant blatant overseeding. Samus would have the most nominations out of everyone by a gigantic margin, and Tifa, Aeris and Zelda would almost surely come second, third and fourth (in any combination).

For all we know, the bracket format won't be anything specific, and this is just a way to boost female nominations.

I've been thinking about that, but the problem there is that, if the board 8 tally is any indication, the male nominations are actually less concentrated than the female ones. What I'm saying is that with such a system, if Cjay would form the bracket strictly based on nominations, we might actually end up with a bracket with more than 32 females.

At the tally, the #32 most nominated male has 7 noms, while the #32 most nominated female has 8.

Even if that tally isn't very accurate, using the male-female spread strictly as a nomination system would probably cause at least 25 females in the bracket anyway, and that's just random and weird for a "twist".

I think the bracket is going to be split fairly (well "fairly", considering the nomination system), but we'll see I guess.
