Match XXVII: (1) Super Mario Bros. vs. (2) Super Smash Bros. Past Matches Super Mario Bros Defeated Madden NFL, 92.21% - 7.79% Defeated Warcraft, 81.13% - 18.87% Super Smash Bros Defeated Dragon Quest, 76.37% - 23.63% Defeated Sonic the Hedgehog, 57.66% - 42.34% Analysis: SMB impressed us by quadrupling Warcraft again proving the strength of the Big 3. SMB also has the luxury of having the lowest ranking 4-pack with only LoZ breaking 80%. SSB also impressed by easily beating Sonic the Hedgehog when most people thought the match would be really close and some even thought Sonic would win. Now this is a unique match and the funny thing is I can’t really decide on how the match will go, all I know is that SMB should win. What makes this match so unique is the fanbase of SSB. SSB, like everyone on board 8 knows is a fighting series that has various Nintendo characters from various series and with that has fans that come from various series. SSB probably has fans of its own, but the problem lies with the fans that only vote because it has *insert character here* in it, but will abandon it if it goes against a Nintendo series. How loyal are SSB fans? Since this is a Nintendo vs. Nintendo match some people are expecting SFF while others are expecting to be very little to none. The average person who is a big fan of both series would probably go with SMB, but what about the rest of Nintendo? This match is creating more questions then they are answering. The one thing SSB is lacking is the amount of games in the series (if you can call it that). The series only has two games to fall on while SMB has had games from all generations plus the countless spin-offs (though I doubt they would help SMB that much). Then again so did Sonic and look at what SSB do to it, but the difference from the two is that Mario has games that did really well in the games contest while Sonic 2 was supposedly SFF by a Nintendo game. Like I said SMB could score almost anything tomorrow, but I think SMB can break 70%. It has shown that it is a true powerhouse in this contest and because of the huge SSBM fans on the board some people think this match will be closer than it is. Just look at this contest. The funniest part of it was to see Zelda,
Mario and FF try and outdo each other, building up to climactic final
matches. Last year there was no such build-up. Link beat Cloud and
Sephiroth right off the bat, and that was it. Not to mention, we went
through two months of regular bracket, and what's the big payoff? Mario
getting the Midgar Zolom treatment from Sephiroth. It's fun because we really have so much less info on them this contest as opposed to Link/Cloud/Sephiroth in any contest from here on out. While I can enjoy a blow-out too, I would rather not see SUCH a blow-out in order to have afew new characters availible to use. --- Miss my Four-Pack Of Fun? Hell, how many people would even notice that nominations are going on
if it was mentioned on the front page? The banner and the current
contest would distract enough attention from the announcement as to
give the fodder favorites better chances to get in.
