B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB

Match 23 - Final Fantasy vs Mega Man

Er, yeah, it's pretty clear what's going to happen here, all things considered. FF absolutely crushed Diablo in the first round with a scary amount of percentage. This isn't just some fodder, it's Diablo (although having said that, there's every indication that Warcraft is in fact stronger than Diablo, and we all saw what SMB did to that).

Mega Man, on the other hand, was comfortable enough in a win against Mario Kart which most expected to be a lot closer, and many expected to go the other way. It'll make little difference.

Zelda managed 80%+ on MMX, and FF should look to do the same here, and I'll be very surprised if it doesn't. It's becoming very clear that the top three series are massively ahead of anything else in the contest, and anything short of a quadrupling has to go down as a sign of weakness.

Bracket says: Final Fantasy
Favourites bracket says: Mario Kart
Vote says: Mega Man
Prediction: Final Fantasy with 81.88%

Fun fact of the day: The events of Sonic/SSB doesn't make jonthomson want to think of any fun facts.

Final Fantasy breaks 80% on Megaman indeed!!

if Zelda can SFF Megaman X, then Final Fantasy can also SFF Megaman. Zelda shared as many MMX games on the SNES as Final Fantasy did Megaman games on the NES.

in fact, i'd say there's only about six series in this contest that have very little if anything in common with Final Fantasy that it wouldn't "SFF":

Civilization
Halo
Sonic
Soul Calibur
Super Smash Bros.
Warcraft

everything else is the same genre or shared a console with Final Fantasy in it's prime (with Final Fantasy's prime consoles being NES, SNES, PSX, PS2, GBA). so, there.

Match XXIII: (1) Final Fantasy vs. (4) Mega Man

Past Matches

Final Fantasy
Defeated Diablo, 85.98% - 14.02%

Mega Man
Defeated Mario Kart, 58.12% - 41.88%

Analysis:

Final Fantasy destroyed Diablo when most of the board thought it would at least put a decent showing, then again the Big 3 so far has been totally destroying their opposition. Mega Man also did better than what was to be expected, in what was suppose to be a close match turned into an easy win by Mega Man making the most hyped match into a dud.

Do I really need to make an analysis about this? Everyone knows that Final Fantasy will crush Mega Man into the ground; the only question is by how much. I think most of us can agree that Final Fantasy will probably at least triple Mega Man, but I think Final Fantasy/Mega Man will be as big as a blowout as LoZ/MMX. I believe that Mega Man is stronger than Mega Man X, but I also believe that Final Fantasy is stronger than Legend of Zelda.

A lot of people thought LoZ SFF MMX, but I think it was minimal at best. Zero didn’t get SFF against Mario and weird enough Mega Man. I think Mega Man X got exposed enough on the Playstation to avoid SFF from Nintendo characters. Just because the results don’t look “right” to you it doesn’t mean it is The Legend of Zelda is just that powerful.

I think the original is stronger than MMX. Even though a poll shows otherwise it just means that MMX has more hardcore fans than MMX and with being on the PS also helped it while the other series were SFF themselves. If there was a poll between the two series I would think the original will win.

I can see Mega Man breaking 20% on Final Fantasy, but like all matches with the Big 3 so far this won’t be pretty. This could be the first time where we won’t lose any perfects, but by the time SSB/Sonic ends there will probably only be perfects in the double digits left.

Ultima Division: Round 2 - Match 23 – (1)Final Fantasy vs. (4)Mega Man

Moltar’s Analysis

Final Fantasy
Round 1 – 85.98% vs. Diablo (14.02%)

Final Fantasy makes Diablo look like fodder…ouch.

Mega Man
Round 1 – 58.12% vs. Mario Kart (41.88%)

In a hotly-debated match, Mega Man makes the Mario Kart supporters look bad.

LoZ in Round 1 – Dominant
Mario in Round 1 – Even more dominant
FF in Round 1 – The most dominant

LoZ in Round 2 – Dominant
SMB in Round 2 – Just as dominant

And now it’s time for FF’s turn in Round 2. LoZ did well against MMX, and SMB did just as well on WarCraft. Now it’s Final Fantasy’s turn to flex its muscles. Now, I think MM is stronger than MMX and WarCraft, but FF is also stronger than SMB and LoZ, so…yeah. MM will be lucky to avoid a quadrupling.

Moltar’s Bracket Says: Final Fantasy will win.

Moltar’s Prediction is: Final Fantasy: 80% - Mega Man: 20%

Ulti’s Analysis

Mega Man beating Mario Kart was nice, but its reward was a round two clash against the odds-on favorite to win this contest. The best that MM can hope for is to prove that there is a chink in FF's armor. Personally, I doubt this happens.

Prediction: Final Fantasy with 70.96%

Soul’s Analysis

I'm in a rush and not at home, so this will be pretty quick. FF = Strongest series in the contest. MM is good, but won't be strong enough.

My prediction: FF wins with 78.99% of the vote.

Mnm’s Analysis

Battle Music: Still More Fighting (FF7)

Well, Mega Man got its chance to shine in this contest, and now it comes to an end! Mega Man humbled me in the MM/MK matchup. But Mega Man has no chance in this matchup. Final Fantasy is crushing everything in its path to the finals. Mega Man's goal is to try to reach 30%. It definitely ought to stand up better to FF than Mega Man X did with LoZ, although it still could look pretty ugly…

Bracket: FF

Vote: FF

Prediction: FF with 73.25%

HaRRich’s Analysis

Predicted winner: Final Fantasy
Earlier this contest:
---FF - 85.98% on Diablo
---MM - 58.12% on Mario Kart
Top 100 List comparison:
---FF7 - #1, FF3/6 - #10, FFX - #12, FF8 - #17, FFT - #19, FF9 - #42, FF2/4 - #50, FF - #76, FFTA - #89
---MM - N/A (had no games on the drop-down list)
Best Game Ever x-stat comparison:
---FF7 - 50% (Best. Game. Ever. champion), FF3/6 - 39.4%, FFX - 36.86%, FF - 32.24%, FFT - 28.69% (was behind FF7/MGS), FFTA - 24.27% (SFF'd by FFX)
---MM - N/A (no rep)

Congrats Mega Man -- MM/MK was the first time I was ever cost a point by not picking you (though Zero has before...damn you, Scorpion). Now, you will be punished with a harsh vengeance that not even I can control. Thank CJayC later.

Final Fantasy was simply generous by being in the bottom of the bracket, so the rest of the series could look good before it showed off. Before we ever saw FF in action, we saw LoZ damn-near get 90% against Civilization, Mario break 92% against Madden, MG embarrass SC and anybody who made that upset pick, and Metroid go past 70% on Kirby...then we saw the first update in FF/Diablo. Mega Man, despite comfortably beating Mario Kart, could never match any one update FF had against Diablo -- sad as it may be -- and I wouldn't expect MM to take the board vote either from FF. Heck, FF very well may even have the power to get on MM what LoZ got on MMX (which would be amazing considering LoZ likely SFF'd MMX, and especially amazing if most voters consider MM to be all of the Mega Man games). The people who said Diablo's just a weakling and LoZ > FF based off of the first round are going to be rudely awakened this time.

Final Fantasy wins with 79.12%

“Holy crap.”

That about sums up my feelings on both FF/Diablo and MM/MK. I never suspected that either of them would get such a high percentage, especially Final Fantasy. Mega Man managed to continue the line of the older series with a large number of games beating the more new series with a smaller amount of games. It is unfortunate, however, that Mega Man has to face Final Fantasy so soon. If Final Fantasy’s performance is any indication, this match is going to ugly.

In the last round, Final Fantasy completely turned heads when it absolutely demolished Diablo; it turned what would otherwise be a pretty strong series into looking like pure fodder. You really cannot mess with someone who has power like that. Final Fantasy’s performance sent a clear message of destruction to The Legend of Zelda. The fact that it can turn even a semi-powerful series into looking like fodder should give one an idea of how bad this match is going to end up being.

Mega Man on the other hand did really well against Mario Kart by nearly snatching up 60%. It seems like most hotly debated matches really aren’t turning out to be even semi-close these days. There was a pretty big split on who thought Mario Kart would win and who thought Mega Man would win – it was 5 – 4 Mario Kart for the Crew – and it was really surprising to see the match not even start off close. Even with the impressive performance under its belt, it is up against an absolute monster. It stands no chance of doing anything except maybe breaking 20%.

Yeah. This match would get more analysis, but it is really quite unnecessary. The most interesting thing about this match is going to be how it compares to LoZ/MMX. Let it be known, if Final Fantasy puts up a better performance against Mega Man than Zelda does against MMX, we’re not going to see anything even give Final Fantasy a sweat. The strongest entity we’ll ever see in a contest? Yeah – Final Fantasy.

Aitch Emm’s Bracket : Final Fantasy

Aitch Emm’s Prediction : Final Fantasy – 79% ; Mega Man – 21%

Aitch Emm’s Vote : Final Fantasy

Yoblazer’s Analysis

While Mega Man did have an impressive first round win that crushed the brackets and spirits (and, in my case, the account) of many, it's about to run into an immovable wall. Apart from almost certainly being the strongest contest entry we've ever seen, Final Fantasy had an absolutely jaw-dropping Round 1 win against Diablo. As bad as this is going to look, Mega Man is actually lucky that he gets to face the beast early - it'll probably help him a bit in the X-Stats, if anything. I'm not sure if even FF can manage to outdo Zelda's performance against Mega Man X, but I've learned not to underestimate the Big Three. Watch out for showers of blood.

Final Fantasy
+ Strongest game on this site
+ Several other very popular games
+ Spans several consoles and eras
+ It's the backbone of GameFAQs
+ Credibility up the wazoo
+ Ridiculous first round performance
- Nada

Mega Man
+ HOLY **** THOUSANDS OF GAMES (potentially)
+ Age
+ Credibility up the wazoo
- No SotN or WoW to anchor it
- It's all for naught

My prediction: Final Fantasy def. Mega Man (77-23)

Leon’s Analysis

Welcome to Round 4 of the “Now top THAT!” battle between the Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy. The Legend of Zelda gets nearly 90% on Civilization and becomes the first to break 100,000 individual votes? Hah, that’s nothing for Final Fantasy! Try 107,000 individual votes against Diablo despite doing exactly 4% worse, raking in 14,000 more total votes! Naturally, the Legend of Zelda is responding in kind. As I’m writing this, the Legend of Zelda is pushing nearly 81% against Mega Man X, still looking to break 100,000 individual votes again, and is currently on pace to hit the highest vote total of the contest so far. So what now, Final Fantasy?

On the surface, it looks like Final Fantasy has the perfect opponent to gauge how it stands in respect to the Legend of Zelda. It’s Mega Man without the X! However, if it does a little worse in this match, don’t lose heart. There are a couple of reasons why this could happen. First of all, there is a chance that Zelda got some measure of SFF against Mega Man X due to both spending a good bit of time on the SNES. Secondly, it’s important to take into consideration that there will likely be a fair portion of voters who will not be voting for Mega Man solely for the Classic series. I don’t know exactly how much of an effect either one has, but they are certainly possible factors.

Of course, if Final Fantasy does worse against Mega Man, Board 8 will automatically make the Legend of Zelda the favorite to win the contest. If Final Fantasy somehow does better, Board 8 will refer back to the Favorite Mega Man Series poll and STILL say the Legend of Zelda is the favorite to win the contest. For some reason, the board is insistent on doing whatever it takes to make it look like Final Fantasy isn’t the hands-down favorite to win this contest. Nearly 86% on Diablo? Oh, Diablo must be bad fodder, even though there isn’t really anything in any contest pointing to that! NintendoFAQs? More like Board NintendEIGHT, am I right?

Leonhart’s Prediction: Final Fantasy with 78.44%

Lopen’s Analysis

You know what I said a few days ago about the really big beasts FF, Mario, and LoZ winning with more % than you'd expect against lesser series? In effect, "SFFing" them? Well, I think Mega Man is a big enough dude to at least try and stop the pain against this juggernaut. He's got a massively large fanbase out there, too, and his popularity age is older than Final Fantasy's, the Mega Man NES games were way bigger than the NES Final Fantasy game (games for you Japanese voters!). Oh, yeah, he's surely at a disadvantage in the SNES eras and above, but he's undoubtedly got the NES vote! He might even have a bit of a tussle for the SNES vote! MMX1-3 and MM7 were fairly popular at least. (yeah I'm still including the X series when I'm thinking Mega Man, I'll be sure to blame undershooting the % on this too, should it happen)

Now, don't get me wrong, were this Mario, or Zelda, I'd have them beating poor ol' Mega Man into the dirt a bit harder… but I think Mega Man's got enough of his own turf to work with that FF doesn't have. And I think he's one of the more popular series here, so even in the case of overlap he won't be annihilated.

Think of it like one of those signs at the amusement parks. "You must be this tall not to be totally destroyed". Okay, so they didn't say "totally destroyed"… and in this case we're talking popularity instead of height… but you get it, right? Mega Man is tall enough to ride, and will at least try to hold his own. (won't it be sad if I'm the highest one here, though? Yeah, right...)

Lopen's Prediction: Final Fantasy with 66.50%

HM:
In fact, I spent about 1,500 words detailing why Metal Gear is going to get upwards to 60%.

Since I didn't see Metal Gear getting 60% on Castlevania, I don't see it getting that on Kingdom Hearts. I'd be very shocked by that. I don't see much reason to believe it can happen.

Actually, I have somewhat of a feeling that this could turn into a MGS/FFT type barnburner. My expectations are that MG will get 54+%, but I would be less surprised by a "shocking" slugfest than a 60% win for MG.

Leonhart:
60%? I guess you're either wagering on an overperformance or Fire Emblem gets dangerously close to Halo.

Actually while I agree it won't get 60%, that particular logic doesn't work well, given Felix (from an even less popular series) got dangerously close to Master Chief.

I would have predicted a similar percentage, if not a bit higher, if Castlevania were in this position instead of Kingdom Hearts. I always believed that Metal Gear would never fall below 58% before winning the division, and nothing has happened for me to really expect otherwise.

Actually, I have somewhat of a feeling that this could turn into a MGS/FFT type barnburner. My expectations are that MG will get 54+%, but I would be less surprised by a "shocking" slugfest than a 60% win for MG.

No. This match will never be even remotely close to being a barnburner. There is absolutely nothing that points to that even being a possibility worth bringing up. I have not the slightest clue on how you would be more surprised by Metal Gear pushing 60% over it being really close. Kingdom Hearts stands absolutely no chance whatsoever in this match. I already think you're shooting really low with 54%, because Metal Gear will never fall that low, but to be less surprised by a tight match? That's some massive overrating to Kingdom Hearts or massive underrating of Metal Gear.

I think Mario will SFF SSB badly. Like Link/Ganondorf bad.

I really doubt that myself. Mario SFFs Ness horribly for reasons more than just SSB. Mario probably comes close to a tripling before SFF anyway.

Interesting to note that this makes four straight matches where Soul and I have been within one percent on our predictions.

I seriously doubt we'll make it five, just from what I can tell from my own write-up. If we do, I'll be amazed.

If Metal Gear keeps it close or (God forbid) loses against Kingdom Hearts, it doesn't mean that KH was underrated. It means that Metal Gear is a chump. While bias frequently enters my picks with Metal Gear, I resolved to pick anything that looked like it had the advantage over it. And while a lot of the potential contenders have more or less been eliminated in my mind (lol GTA, lol Metroid), I would still probably take SSB today given what it's doing to Sonic -- even if it is SFF, and certainly if it's not. Metal Gear never won its division on its own strength to me -- it won because its biggest contenders were overrated to all hell. Soul Calibur proved it, Halo proved it, and the only reason Kingdom Hearts didn't lose against Castlevania was because of KH2 (one might contend it doesn't even qualify for the contest without it, but we can't forget CoM). That MG has shown some potential weakness doesn't matter given the competition it has next round.

And I'm practically convinced now that Metal Gear isn't the 4th strongest series -- legtimately, at least, though there's no real way to prove it. Yes, much of the contest's trends favor older, more established series...but that really doesn't help Metal Gear that much. It had only one game on the NES that was hardly a blockbuster, and an unofficial sequel that is reviled by virtually all who have played it. It missed out on the entire SNES/Genesis era, and didn't come back with a vengeance until MGS for the Playstation. After that we've had the mixed bag that was MGS2 and the likely-more-popular-than-MGS2-but-less-popular-than-MGS MGS3, but that's basically it for the main series. VR Missions, Substance, Ghost Babel, Subsistence, the Ac!ds, these add a negligible amount to its strength overall. The two original MGs have probably been played more through Subsistence than anything else -- heck, I'm betting Slowbeef's strategy guide amounts to the most that many people know about the original MG games.

It's got a lot of games that most people haven't played, and then it's got three strong games. That's it for Metal Gear. Granted, this should be *more* than enough to take out freaking Kingdom Hearts, but it doesn't mean MG is anything notable. If Kingdom Hearts comes close to Metal Gear, expect Zelda to annihilate it (and if it can't, expect a crushing from FF). If KH comes close to Metal Gear and then it escapes the doubling from FF in the X-Stats...well, then I'll admit I was wrong (that's not happening, obviously).

Which is sad, because it's essentially a two-horse race between a two-game series and a three-game series (in the eyes of most voters).

I jest about MG beating Zelda, but Zelda legitimately deserves to win that match. But SMB deserves to win the whole thing and it's not happening -- SO C'MON METAL GEAR USE THE M9 TRANQUILZERS TO PUT ALL THE ZELDA VOTERS TO SLEEP AND MAKE THE BIGGEST CONTEST UPSET EVAR

...then there'd be a question.

I'm really not convinced on MG being all that high. I know I'd take it over Sonic, but I would not be surprised at all if it lost. right now it's looking like SSB is #4, though I'm really hesitant to try and extrapolate any meaning from the numbers in this contest. it all seems really wonky.

Revered on 7 continents...admired from Board 8 to LUE and back again...he is...

Steve Illumina

Making my way out from the curtains, holding a lil mic..."Greetings to all my fans and fanbabies, to the noobs and elites alike! I am of course, Steve Illumina, your resident satirical analyst..."

"As is traditional here on Steve Illumina Speaks, we begin with the Tale of the Tape, or shall I say, the Disc"

'Its not the net results of one's life thats important. Its the day to day concerns, and the celebration of life and love!'
VS
'You betrayed me, Protoman! Im gonna break you, Megaman!'

Sage's Pick: SuperNova: Best. Boss Attack. Ever.
Fanbabies' Pick: Bahamut
Blast from the Past: My World is Square's Pick: FF

FF wins. Nuff said. Mega Man...deserves so much better than this...he would have wiped the floor with SSBM with his Bubble Lead!

Now onto today's program...

*cue cheesy theme music*

"Many of my fans have been writing to my column, wanting to know more about the Steve behind the analyses! So I brought in world renowned journalist Sushi X to interview yours truly! SO give a warm welcome to Sushi X!"

*very cheesy chinese buffet music plays as Sushi X walks out and we sit in some comfy chairs on stage*

Sushi: So then, Mr. Illumina, thank you for having me.

Steve: Yep yep, I wanted the best video game journalist there ever was, to go along with me, the greatest analyst there ever was!

Sushi: Oh yes. Now Steve, lets start with the basics. Is Steve your real name?

Steve: Uh...yah.

Sushi: And Illumina? That your name too?

Steve: No doofus! It is my internet name, and has been for like 10 yrs. Its been my Xbox Live tag, my email addy, all sorts of things. Every gamer everywhere knows this hallowed name is my own!

Sushi: And what does it mean?

Steve: Well its the sacred sword of FFVI, and no other FF got it, so it is special to it. And FFVI is still one of my fav games of all time. And the word 'Illumina' means enlightened one in the Hindi language. And that is me, the Sage of Board 8, the enlightened one that I am!

Sushi: If you are so enlightened, then why did you pick Sonic to win?

Steve: *fuming* Damn that rodent. I tell you this, Sonic the Chokehog failed me. He failed all the old school gamers of this world. Losing to a one hit wonder. I will never ever pick him to win a match again unless he takes on fodder. He is also hereby banished from the Noble Nine, returning it to the Elite Eight of Link, Cloud, Sephy, Mario, Mega Man, Snake, Samus, and Crono.

Sushi: OK going back to the interview here...how old are ya? And where from?

Steve: I am 28, from Harrisburg PA. I am one of the oldest Board 8 regulars, and surely the oldest analyst, hence the nickname the 'Sage of Board 8'.

Sushi: And how did you get started in gaming?

Steve: Well, when I was 6, I got an Intellivision, my first system, as a present. I tell ya friend, Lock n Chase was my game in those days...LOVED it. Played it so much. From there I got an Atari 5200 soon after, played lots of old school Pac Man and Centipede, etc, and then in 1985 when I was 7 I got an NES and the rest is history.

Sushi: So then you had the stupid robot?

Steve: Yah. I broke it when I got killed by the four headed Gleeok on Level 8 in Zelda 1 a few times in a row. Wish I still had it though now...oh well.

*Thats all for today due to space limits. Will be continued in my Round 3 columns after SF upsets RE!*

MG still has a shot, though, if only because SSB suffers from the same problems Kingdom Hearts does -- it just happens to be stronger. MGS2 alone is worth 40% on SSBM, MGS3 likely adds more, and MGS would probably make a close match out of it...so it's just a question of how much SSB adds. I'm not going to even give SSB a chance at coming close to SSBM, but I do believe it's a strong game...probably strong enough to take MGS2, which would give SSB the win.

hmm... this kind of reminds me of the games contest, where x-stats just ended up looking awful. is it possible that linearity is just thrown out the window with games as opposed to characters? I mean, characters aren't the most linear things in the world either, but at least the x-stats look valid; in the game contest it was just a mess. yeah I guess you can call SFF on the entire game contest and this contest as well, but at some point you've gotta wonder, you know?

Well, I think a games contest would work a lot better if we didn't have the games sorted by generation. That made for the most SFF-riddled thing ever. With this, it's just a lot harder to avoid SFF, period. I wish Ceej hadn't tried to be 'cute' with some of his setups though (the SMB/SSB/Sonic 'trap', for one).
