Match XXII: (3) Sonic the Hedgehog vs. (2) Super Smash Bros. Past Matches Sonic the Hedgehog Defeated Devil May Cry, 70.87% - 29.13% Super Smash Bros Defeated Dragon Quest, 76.37% - 23.63% Analysis: Sonic went over expectations and destroyed DMC proving once again that the newer series with few games aren’t as strong as what people thought they would be. Super Smash Bros. on the other hand was one of the few newer series to go by people’s expectations. This is the match of the round, it may not be as close as KH/CV, but it has a lot of brackets riding on this and no one really knows who will win. I’m torn about this match, my bracket says SSB but my heart says Sonic. The main reason why I picked SSB to win was because of Sonic 2’s bad performance and SSBM winning its division, but this contest has shown otherwise. We already know what SSB will be capable of because other than SSBM, the series only has one other game to rely its strength from and it won’t be as much as the rest on the Sonic series combining with Sonic 2. There is still one small hope for SSB and that was KH. Kingdom Hearts proved that despite being a new series with few games it can still win against an old series with many games. Sure it took almost everything Kingdom Hearts had, but it did still win. The problem still is that Sonic is probably stronger than Castlevania, but as Kingdom Hearts appeal to many Final Fantasy fans, Super Smash Bros. appeal to Nintendo fans even more so since the characters are actually part of the game and aren’t some side characters. So like in the games contest it’s basically Nintendo vs. Sonic, but not as strong. Even though the board supports SSB over Sonic (SSB is overrated on the board), I think there really isn’t any favorite going to the match and I can see any series breaking 55% against their opponent. I really, really want SSB to win this match. I'm probably the only
person who doesn't think the series is overrated on the board,

MGS *is* the best game ever, and I'd never in a million years try to
say it deserved a win over SMB. SMB spans too much, is too
revolutionary, and is too good of a series.
SSB should count its lucky stars this is a popularity contest, because

It could barely triple Dragon Quest. And? It's not like Dragon Quest is some obscure, no-name series. DQVIII has been on the Top 10 PS2 FAQs since its release, and this is a very RPG-driven site. DQVIII has been on the Top 10 PS2 FAQs since its release, and this is a

I find no reason for DMC to struggle with Dragon Quest. Devil May Cry may be the more recognizable name, but two of its three games don't seem to be very popular at all. The sequel was widely hailed as a stinker and the third game sold very poorly. It wouldn't surprise me if a character like Dante was our biggest example of a "whole being greater than the sum of his parts." Gotta go out, so here's my Analysis: This match is gonna be ugly? Remember when Sonic lost to Samus - twice? Remember when Sonic 2 lost to Super Mario World? Remember when... uhh... Robotnik lost to Ganondorf? Well, get this: Super Smash Bros. has representatives from all three of these series. gg, Sonic. Prediction: 50.02 (Samus on Sonic '02) + 57.51 (Samus on Sonic '04) + 70.57 (SMW on Sonic 2) + 76.64 (Ganon on Robotnik) + 37.36 (Starcraft's ranking in Sp2k4, for good measure) + 12.00 (poll starting time EST) / 25 (number of characters in Melee = number of equally split fanbases) = *does math* ...Super Smash Bros. with 12.16%! lol xstats --- This was Ed Bellis. |
