FastFalcon wins, and we cannot have that. ^_^ ! We should have that though, just once. --- Revenge is a dish best served cold. ~ Old Klingon Proverb |

Probably a mixture of both and probably nothing to worry about since
Metal Gear's path is pretty cut and dry. Still, it'd be nice to still
see it nail that fourth strongest series deal. Absolutely. I don't even understand all the counter-argumenting towards the pic having an influence when it's pretty much an accepted fact that Snake underperforms in sprite rounds. But no matter how you turn it, Fire Emblem's performance is impressive, even if I do think it's pretty exaggerated (I seriously don't see it beating Soul Calibur). --- "I didn't come to play, I came to win" - Kamahl, Pit Fighter. |
consolefreak | Posted 7/20/2006 11:20:12 AM | message detail |
That pretty much is the reason. Pictures really only matter for
voters who don't have a strong connection to either series. They will
still easily recognize Metal Gear(because even non-fans recognize the
name Metal Gear) but may have more trouble with Fire Emblem. A picture
would help them remember Fire Emblem better. Even if I'm wrong on this,
I still can't see Metal Gear being hurt signifcantly more than Fire
Emblem by a bad picture. Eh, I don't know. Fire Emblem certainly has fewer fans, but they're pretty hardcore I think. Anyway, Fire Emblem doesn't suffer from this lack of recognizability today, no matter how ugly its pic is. --- "I didn't come to play, I came to win" - Kamahl, Pit Fighter. |

I don't think that Fire Emblem can't have some intrinsic strength on
GameFAQS, but I can't imagine that a series strong enough to
legitimately pull off this performance against Metal Gear could only
get 57% against probable fodder like Silent Hill. --- "Dropo! You're the laziest man on Mars." |

I love how all the crazy people are jumping on the bandwagon. You've
got Lopen, who needs no introduction, Ed Bellis, who has the worst Guru
bracket of this contest, and me, who always has a cookie cutter bracket
except for the few upsets I pick, all of which never happen. It will make it all the sweeter when we prove you all wrong. Not to mention the crazy SO > Pokemon supporters! --- Explicit Content Cheer Up Emo Kids |

DeepHyren12 | Posted 7/20/2006 11:32:41 AM | message detail |
Take these three factors into consideration: 1.) The name of the series listed is "Metal Gear" not "Metal Gear Solid. 2.) The pictures are sprites from the old Metal Gear games. 3.) Some fans might know of the seperation between MM and MMX and assume a similar split between MG/MGS. Given that "solid" at the end, it's not very hard to imagine them being considered two seperate series. Now, is every voter going to think this way? Of course not. But if 5% think they're voting for MG instead of MGS, it could significantly tilt the results in favor of FE. And no, I'm not biased. I'm a huge fan of FE and am desperately hoping for MG weakness fo CV or KH can pull off the upset. But something doesn't add up here. --- "Civil government is in reality instituted for the defense of the rich against the poor" --Adam Smith |

FastFalcon05 | Posted 7/20/2006 11:42:24 AM | message detail |
Ugh, I sincerely am not a fan of how Snake gets these sprite excuses
during his matches. I've always been a pictures don't really matter
type of person, and if I wasn't leaving in a bit, I'd go find all of
snake's sprite rounds just to find out meaningful any of the results
are. More valid is the "maybe they're voting for Metal Gear and not Metal Gear Solid" option. However, I still don't really buy into that, either. We always innately question the intelligence of the voters, but I think they're smart enough to remember this is round two, and it's still the same metal gear they voted for last round. This is a disappointing result for MG (and getting more and more disappointing each update, evidently) and it only point to one thing: Kingdom Hearts over Metal Gear! --- Revenge is a dish best served cold. ~ Old Klingon Proverb |

Absolutely. I don't even understand all the counter-argumenting
towards the pic having an influence when it's pretty much an accepted
fact that Snake underperforms in sprite rounds. Eh, there are still people who think Bowser is stronger than Ganon, so obviously not. I don't think it's a big underperformance by MG, but it would be doing about 2% better with an MGS pic, IMO. Or have a strong connection for both for which there isn't a set favorite! <_< Despite never having played a Sonic game and playing all the Mario games, Shadow's pic against Mario was enough to convince me to vote Shadow. I think a lot of others probably felt the same way there. --- Pity for the guilty is treason to the innocent. |

I don't particularly care whether a character is deep, to tell the
truth. I like it best when a character has...y'know, character. They
should entertain me, and characters like HK-47 pull this off
spectacularly. I mean, depth is secondary to subtle insults about
meatbags along with copious amounts of violent threats. I'm kind of late for the characters discussion, but this is pretty much how I feel about characters. The things I care about are personality and character design, in that order. Depth is just a little bonus, if they have it. My two all time favorite characters, Mint (Dewprism) and Lilly (Suikoden III) have no depth whatsoever, they just have awesome attitudes and some really funny lines. Crono is another one - sure, he doesn't say much, but he's got tons of personality just from the way he looks and acts. --- Nominate Aeris for SC2k6 |

I've never used depth to determine my favorite video game characters. I'll take Link's hookshotin', Ocelot's gun twirlin', Snake's chain smokin', HK's meatbag slammin', and Mario's pasta eatin' attitudes any day. When I want depth, I'll take to a real person or something. |

RPGuy96 | Posted 7/20/2006 12:43:38 PM | message detail |
Oh, and for those complaining about the match pic, Fire Emblem's sprite is from a game that came out only in Japan.
Even a lot of hardcore Fire Emblem fans haven't played Mystery of the
Emblem, because a translation patch didn't exist until about two weeks
ago when I finished half the game. If there was a Blazing Sword Lord
there instead of Marth, you might have a point, but a Mystery of the
Emblem sprite doesn't really help Fire Emblem. It's really a
delightfully bad picture for both sides. --- Mustache...and green... |
FlamboyantSpy | Posted 7/20/2006 12:47:30 PM | message detail |
...I still don't get how the argument that Metal Gear is
underperforming due to the lack of "Solid" in its name has any merit.
As mnm is fond of saying, the voters aren't stupid, and they won't not
vote for a series because the name is a little different than they're
used to. People who know MGS are presumably familiar enough with the
name (since you can't, y'know, say "Metal Gear Solid" without "Metal
Gear") to make the distinction. Isn't mnm one of the biggest supporters of MM meaning classic only? --- Explicit Content Cheer Up Emo Kids |

Eh, there are still people who think Bowser is stronger than Ganon, so obviously not. Actually I would have to agree on that. Well, he is at least more dependable and consistent. But I do think Bowser got closer to Snake than he should've been, after seeing Snake's percentages on Zelda and a -very- impressive Mario. I know he has Street Fighter and Sonic, not sure about FF/LoZ. I think he picked FF, though. Then I think he may just end up getting a perfect. Sorry, but I lost my perfect on WarCraft/GTA. Castlevania, Smash Bros., Resident Evil, and Final Fantasy winning would put me at -1. .. or not.
