that picture kicks ass. I love it. book it: Fire Emblem gets 47%!!! man, if Chrono was in this, we'd be talking about it overperforming thanks to sprites. --- xyzzy |

...so that is Marth, eh? Well, I don't think we'll have to worry about Melee skewing the votes at all. Jesus... game. --- Mustache...and green... |

Revered on 7 continents...admired from Board 8 to LUE and back again...he is... Steve Illumina Making my way out from the curtains, holding a lil mic..."Greetings to all my fans and fanbabies, to the noobs and elites alike! I am of course, Steve Illumina, your resident satirical analyst..." "As is traditional here on Steve Illumina Speaks, we begin with the Tale of the Tape, or shall I say, the Disc" 'The truck have started to move!' VS 'If the stomach is empty, empty, too, lies the heart.' (Lowen for those who dont know) Sage's Pick: The Cardboard Box! Fanbabies' Pick: The BombBlast Suit! Blast from the Past: Ai Samurai's Pick: Fire Emblem OK my loyal fans! Welcome back to another edition of Steve Illumina speaks. I am your host, Steve, the Sage of Board 8, and my Perfect bracket, now at 20-0 since Ridley's victory, continues to impress me, and all of you, my loyal fans! Now today yours truly must vent. And this time, it is about Fire Emblem. We got a Sweet 16 this summer of 14 real gaming series that have made their mark historically, economically, in cinema, in cereal bowls, as company mascots, etc. But we also got a one hit wonder called SSBM, and a 2nd tier RPG set that really has not done anything but be in the right place at the right time. It dont belong here...and tomorrow Snake and friends will show us why. Now every season, respected elite analysts like me, as well as noobs, fanbabies and other Board 8 movers and shakers all are angry because 1 game, or series, or character or villian or whatever is missing. Their spot taken by some ham n' egger that dont belong! So in that tradition...I give you...a sample bracket that could have been...16 series that were neglected...or were outnominated by the dweebs who plague RPGFAQs... And for even more fun...I 'roleplayed' all the matches in it to simulate probable results! 1 Chrono Trigger vs 16 Grandia The overworshipped one hit wonder Chrono would have no trouble wiping the floor with 2nd tier RPG series Grandia in the first match. 8 Yu-Gi-Oh! vs 9 Gradius The first scrolling space shooter to grace the contests EVER, and it would impress, capturing the old school and nostalgia votes to upset fading fad Yu-Gi-Oh! 4 Tetris vs 13 SimCity The PC vote would not be enough, as SimCity would be beaten pretty badly by casual fav Tetris. 5 Secret of Mana vs 12 Tekken A series that dont get the love and respect it deserves here, Mana, would prove a lot of peeps wrong who smelled upset as Tekken would be dispatched with ease. 6 Donkey Kong vs 11 Tomb Raider Two series everyone laughs at would go head to head. The Nintendites would carry the monkey to the next banana plantation... 3 Mortal Kombat vs 14 Tales Series (Namco) 2nd tier series #1921-0, Tales of Symphonia, Destiny etc, would lose to MK, making me and lots of casuals happy. 7 Command & Conquer vs 10 Quake This one would be too close to call going into it, but in the end, Quake would pull it out by a narrow margin. 2 Contra vs 15 Need for Speed The old schoolers and Nintendites, among others, would carry Contra over the longest running driving series of all time, the Need for Speed series. And there ya have it folks, the Round 1 results of this lil bracket that could have been but never was! Stay tuned for the later round results in future episodes of Steve Illumina Speaks! --- Steve Illumina: Sage of Board 8, Hated by Fanbabies, Loved by the Masses. Score: 20-0. Next Win: METAL GEAR! |

I totally expected MG to have an ugly sprite, which is why I expected FE to do well. I underestimated FE also getting a crappy pic, which is amazing considering it has decent sprites. I still think FE will outperform SH, though. --- sig |

I'm convinced that CJayC uses Solid **** just to spite us. To be fair, I've yet to see a solid snake sprite that didn't suck. Then again, when I said this last year I was treated to a snake picture from some gameboy mg game where he looks even worse, and was told that the sprite I was shown is awesome... --- When dictatorship is a fact, revolution becomes a right. ~ Victor Hugo {WoT}~> Board 408 |

Ceej prides himself on using progressively worse and worse sprites in
MG pictures as the contests go on...though he slipped up a bit in 2k5
by making it marginally better than 2k4. This makes up for it though. ...I think that's the sprite from Snake's Revenge. o.O --- Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace. These are codes of behavior. |

Karma Hunter | Posted 7/19/2006 5:11:21 PM | message detail |
Well, judging by this, you don't have that much room before you take
them all over Metroid as well. Which leaves Metroid in lower midcarder
territory at best. --- Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace. These are codes of behavior. |
Adept of Aiur | Posted 7/19/2006 5:11:49 PM | message detail |
Well, I always figured that Metroid had to be pretty strong... It had
decent top 100 representation, and while I'm a big advocate of SSB and
SSBM helping character strength a lot, it's not enough to shoot Samus into the Noble Nine alone. --- "An intellectual is a man who takes more words than necessary to tell more than he knows." |

trannyscience | Posted 7/19/2006 5:14:27 PM | message detail |
yeah, this is confusing the hell out of me, and I think the Pokemon
series is stronger than everyone else. it just doesn't make sense to be
a top five character here and be, at best, a midcarder as far as games
go. --- yzzyx |
Adept of Aiur | Posted 7/19/2006 5:15:02 PM | message detail |
Well, Kirby's series is apparently weak as hell, and look how high he is. Kirby is a shining example of a series with one popular game. the best part about this is that, theoretically, Xenogears could be
a game with significant strength here. and that makes no sense. It doesn't really make no sense. I could see it being significantly popular, but I wouldn't actually expect it to be. Still, I wouldn't be shocked if it was. Also, I would take Pokemon G/S/C in a rematch. --- "An intellectual is a man who takes more words than necessary to tell more than he knows." |

Xenogears is a niche RPG with average sales numbers. it's not exactly going to be a beast in a contest setting. it makes me think that I'd love to see Chrono Cross, though. it sold twice as many copies and isn't nearly as hated as board 8 thinks. --- yzzyx |
NewLib | Posted 7/19/2006 5:19:59 PM | message detail |
Yes it is. Chrono Cross is easily the most hated RPG that Squaresoft has ever had the courtesy of making. --- Where am I? |

I don't buy CC having as much hate as B8 thinks, but it doesn't seem to
get inordinate amounts of love, either. It's a game that inspires
apathy, really. --- Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace. These are codes of behavior. |

eh, I like it. I also know two or three people who have it as their
favourite game. I'd say that it'd do pretty decent, at least as well as
Xenogears would. --- yzzyx |

trannyscience | Posted 7/19/2006 5:24:33 PM | message detail |
oh, Xenogears is a top 5 game to me. Chrono Cross's fanbase, isn't as
crazy as Xenogears's, but I'd say that more people have played it. plus
it's related to the third strongest game on this site, and that has to
count for something. --- yzzyx |
NewLib | Posted 7/19/2006 5:28:39 PM | message detail |
To be quite honest Cross was the reason I didnt nominate the Chrono series. I know the spelling errors were a big reason it didnt get in, but Cjay said even without those it would have only been a 7 seed. More people were nominating games such as Star Ocean and Silent Hill than Chrono. --- Where am I? |
trannyscience | Posted 7/19/2006 5:29:49 PM | message detail |
people didn't nominate the Chrono series cause it was board 8 only. if
you put that to the public, it gets a lot more nominations. Star Ocean
and Silent Hill both had significant rallying efforts. Chrono was kind
of expected to get in, so not as many people nominated it. --- yzzyx |
