I must be the only person who isn't all that surprised here. Pokemon
hate is simply not what it used to be. this isn't rSFF or anything like

I considered Kirby over Metroid but didn't take it because I couldn't
see Kirby having any real strength on his own. I had the same sentiment
with Pokemon, but if I had any suspicions of actual strength coming

and I think Metroid pulls away slowly. the board loves the hell out of
Pokemon, so it makes sense that it's doing so well. 55-45 seems

Well, considering that Pokemon sold tens of milions of copies, many of which were bought by people who were 11 or 12 at the time (like I was in 1998), and are now teenagers or older looking back on it as a something fun they did as a kid, I guess it isn't surprising that it has strength. But it doesn't have the same kind of insane rSFF appeal as SSB. You know, come to think of it, I have a lot more fond memories of
Pokemon then I do Metroid. Than again, I have no good memories of
Pokemon once it got past about the 250 mark. Then I just stopped caring

I just didn't think that the hate had disappeared completely is all... oh, it hasn't completely disappeared. let me paste what I wrote about this match on H's board: Metroid vs. Pokemon well, I think we're all pretty sure that Metroid wins here. it's big here and is probably higher in the Nintendo hierarchy here. that said, I can't shake this feeling that Pokemon is being massively underrated. I really think that the Pokemon hate has gone away, kind of like how the Halo hate has decreased over the years. also, if it's anything like Halo, it'll impress vs. strong opponents while being crap vs. weak ones. I also can't help but compare Pokemon/SO to MMX/Suikoden. SO is most likely stronger than Suikoden, yet only performed 7% better on a (supposedly) much weaker Pokemon. if this match is Metroid-MMX, it's probably more debated than it is now. but regardless, Metroid should take this. I don't understand the 70%+ predictions people are making, but it should be able to get about 60%, which is good enough for me. prediction: Metroid with 60.22% doesn't look like 60% is going to happen, but at least the idea is there!!! --- xyzzy I lost a sig bet to War13104. I'd have called for Knuckles > Magus if I followed the X-Stats more
closely. I had no idea Knuckles was as high in them as he was. I just

Whether or not Pokemon hatred has died down over the years isn't that
big a deal. After studying the first round, I'd bet many of us would
argue for Metroid being Nintendo's third strongest series. It has the
old school credibility, the industry influence, and a wonderful
resurgence over the past four years. Pokemon simply being "less hated"
shouldn't suddenly mean that it gives Metroid a fight. This is amazing. --- Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your WOOOOOOOOORLD!!! |

I'd put Cloud over Link in 2003 instead. THAT was crazy. After Cloud/Sonic that was callable (I was simply one of the more vocal callers, but there were others). Even after Cloud/CATS there were some mostly humorous rumblings. This is...wow. I didn't read one person even humorously say Pokemon could make a match of this. I doubt Pokemon will win so it's not going to be the biggest upset, but if it does happen it would be up there. As much as I expected Metroid to blow out Pokemon, talk of this being
one of the bigger upsets ever, is just pure insanity. There were plenty
of people who were taking Pokemon > Metroid, or at least giving it a

and I don't think this is Metroid being weak either. I think Metroid
could beat Mega Man and a lot of other series' out there. it's a very

One of the reasons people picked Pokemon over Metroid almost certainly
has to do with the size of the bracket. In a 32-entry field where the
Final 4 is relatively etched in stone, people start looking for all
sorts of crazy upsets they'd never otherwise consider. Had this match
taken place in a 64-entrant bracket, I doubt anyone, save one or two
crazies, would have taken Pokemon. Had Magus/Knuckles taken place in a
smaller bracket, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few people risk it. Besides, the quality of the upset shouldn't have much to do with how many people didn't take it. Quite a few people took Starcraft over Halo. --- Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your WOOOOOOOOORLD!!! |
