From what I've seen of Twilight Princess, it looks like a "prettier" Ocarina of Time. I still saw hints of the basic 3D Zelda gaming engine in those video clips, so I don't see it being anything revolutionary at all. Of course looking at the "Balrog" fight among others, there are sure to be a bunch of moments in the games that will make fans drool. It probably won't end up being more popular than OoT due to OoT being so entrenched, but I don't think people will be disappointed with it at all.

Think how much better SMW was than SMB3 technically, yet SMB3 is the one that still is adored. I see the same thing in the relationship between OoT and TP.

I know...but I'm tired of Ocarina of Time! I mean, at least Majora's Mask mixed things up with the three-day thing, even if people necessarily didn't like it as much. But I'd like Zelda to really push the envelope, not simply be content to make it bigger and prettier.

But then again, I say the same thing about Final Fantasy...DAMMIT

Well, Final Fantasy games DID get better after FFVII.

As long as you don't count FFIX and you stop at FFX.

Ick...the representative of the entire SMB series getting flattened by the villain of the most popular FF game didn't fill me with any kind of hope for SMB. I'll be pulling for it, but FF could end up making that one nasty.

The Mario series is going to be much stronger than Mario the character. Not everyone really cares for Mario. There are plenty of us Luigi fans (!) as well as Yoshi and the rest of the crew. The games themselves transcends all of them. Sure FF will be a much stronger entity, but Il still think SMB will impress. I definitely don't think it will simply roll over to FF. Seeing how the Nintendo series have performed so far, I think there will be some fight taken to FF. Think Bowser/Ganon taking on Sephiroth in Spring 2k5, except that SMB and LoZ are far stronger contestants this time around.

The Mario series is going to be much stronger than Mario the character.

And I'd expect the gap between Sephiroth and the Final Fantasy series to be larger, quite frankly. I think that's a really bad comparison to draw. Final Fantasy is MUCH more than Sephiroth, even more so than SMB is Mario.

That would be a bit redundant, so I clearly didn't mean that!

Note that I actually LIKE Final Fantasy IX. Just not as much as FFVII.

Well this atleast puts SSB ahead of MMX by a clear margin (is there any doubt that DQ would beat Suikoden).

Im impressed by Sonic's victory and have to call it the favorite in its match againist SSB, but I dont think SSB is a pushover so Im going 53-47.

You think I don't know that? Of course I disagree with the SMB/Mario thing. Call me crazy, but I think SMB gets 40% on FF with ease.

BTW, I do give DQ the 'edge' against Suikoden...but I do doubt if it can pull off the victory. Suikoden II outranked Dragon Warrior decisively on the list (although it's only the original DW), and DQ's sales here have been pathetic. Let's not forget that Suikoden has actually mustered up enough noms to get into a Games Contest before, and got a WAY higher seed than DQ in this one (board biased noms, but something to consider). Yeah, DQ8 probably puts this out of reach, but Suikoden winning there wouldn't shock me.

You have far more faith in DQ's strength than I. Honestly, SSB going into the 80's territory wouldn't have surprised me. The series sells TERRIBLY here in the States, with DQ8 perhaps being the first 'serious' attempt at establishing it here. Honestly, without DQ8 it probably doesn't make this field.

DW1 was far more popular back in the day than DQ8 is now.. that was then though. Crystalis was rather popular back then as well and no one even knows what the hell it is these days.

I'll just be honest. I've been gaming since 1990, and when people were talking about, "Well, everyone's at least heard of Dragon Warrior/Quest," I kept thinking to myself that I'd never heard of it until I came to this board. I'd at least heard of Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger because they had hyped releases, but Dragon Warrior? No clue.

Seeing the estimations just confirms this in my mind as a tossup...honestly, DMC always struck me as being an underseeded midcarder in this bracket, while DQ has never appeared to be much more than fodder. I see DMC going around 60/40 on it; maybe more, maybe less.

The only bad thing is, Sonic needed to establish itself as the favorite, not have this be a tossup. As far as intangibles go, the biggest one right now on this site is probably being Nintendo. I like Sonic's chances a lot more than before the contest started...but I still ain't fond of 'em.

"gaming since 1990" is the reason! DW is a late 80's thing. I'm not surprised it's not that popular, but back when it was really well-known. I bet it sold a ton more copies than the video game sites are reporting. I can go to any old game store and find five copies.

And I'm older than the average on GameFAQs, so it'd be no surprise if people weren't familiar with DQ/DW.

I had a subscription to Nintendo Power during the early N64 era for like...a year or two. I think it was free, for some reason or another. I've been a subscriber to GamePro since 1994 (I've got every issue from 89 up in my closet), though I think I'm about to let my subscription die since I barely even read them anymore when I get them. Don't really need them since I get my information from here much more quickly.
