Oh, downloading...Why do you need to download? I'm sure you can find it somewhere. If you've got a GameCube, you can get the Twin Snakes. Honestly, if you have no attachment to MGS before playing that game, 99% of the criticism that the MGS purists throw at it won't bother you. --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |

And don't worry. Everybody sucks at Metal Gear Solid the first time
they play it. I've heard of quite a few people who quit because they
can't get past the first couple of areas. But honestly, it must've taken me at least an hour to do it the first time I played. MGS also has a PC version, which might be easier to "acquire". If you want something awesome that's a Nintendo game, check out Super Demo World. It's a hack of SMW that adds an incredible amount of new stuff to the game (including SMB3 levels <3). It's also actually challenging. It's pretty easy to acquire, since it's free and all, and it'll entertain you for hours on end. --- Pity for the guilty is treason to the innocent. |

Yeah, MGS games can be speed-run pretty damn quickly...kinda like
Metroid games, only with cutscenes. I'm not exactly sure why MGS had to
be two-discs in the first place...doesn't seem warranted. IIRC, only the final few parts of MGS were on the second disc. It was most likely a small spill-over onto the second disc. My record for beating MGS was 3 hours with skipping cutscenes. --- Current Contest Score: 10/10 Next Winner: Sonic the Hedgehog I'll just put something to fill another line here. |

Man, I still remember my first playthrough on the Twin Snakes (played
it before the original MGS), and Baker mentioned it was "on the back of
the package." I had no idea what he was talking about. I searched all
over the place and couldn't find anything with a codec number on it. Mushroom Division: Round 1 - Match 12 – (2)Super Smash Bros. vs. (7)Dragon Quest Moltar’s Analysis Super Smash Bros. This game just came out of nowhere for the N64 and became a huge hit. Once SSB:M came out, it just got even bigger. Now SSB:B is one of the most hyped next-gen games. Dragon Quest No, not Dragon Ball, Dragon Quest. The series, while popular in Japan, isn’t that big in the States. The latest in the series is Dragon Quest VIII released on the PS2. Ok, let’s see here. SSB:M was one of the strongest games in the 2004 Contest. SSB:M has also aged well over the years. Dragon Quest? Obscure, yet semi-popular, RPG Series. How many times has the obscure RPG game beaten the uber-popular hit? I’ll tell you the answer, not enough! The only real strong obscure RPG series is the Chrono series. Speaking of the Chrono series, where is it? *In the year 2006 AD, Crono, Magus and Frog are resting in a random house* Crono: … Magus: Agreed, we performed horribly last year in the GameFAQs Contest. We looked so good in 2004, and then blew it the next year. Frog hasn’t been right since he got destroyed by Samus. Frog: I hath been shamed by a wench, gee-wilkers. I almost got pwned by a Kingdom Hearts character, gosh darnit! Magus: And I, I blew it against Knuckles. Knuckles! He’s like, an angsty version of Sonic! Crono: … Magus: Oh yeah, that is Shadow. But still! Round 1, I lost to Knuckles. Even you didn’t do as well as you usually did, Crono. Frog: Thou art correct, Magus, Cowabunga dude! Prodigious! Crono: …!! Magus: Your performances against Master Chief and Megaman weren’t all too good, and you lost to Mario, who you beat back in 2004 with ease. Crono: … Magus: Whatever, Crono. I still say it wasn’t just Frog and I that fell. Crono: …? Magus: Hey, that’s right. I do remember hearing something about a Best Series Ever Contest on GameFAQs. I wonder if we’ll be invited. Frog: Of course, we’re the goddamn Chrono series, wark! Jeepers! Crono: … Magus: Ha, you guys are right. There’s no way we won’t be in the Contest. I mean, what else is there, Shadow Hearts? Madden? Dragon Quest? Ha Ha! Narrator: The three enjoyed a hearty laugh, but in the year 1000 AD… Lucca: Ha, now that we’ve made sure that those three don’t get invited to the GameFAQs Summer Contest, we’ll get in for sure! Marle: Good thinking Lucca. Stealing and burning their invitations was a great idea. Go Go less popular Chrono characters! Robo: Indeed! Narrator: Little did they know that the GameFAQs Summer Contest would be held late this year, and instead stole and burned the invitation to the Best Series Ever Contest, screwing them all over. Robo: Are you serious? Aww sh…*UNIVERSE EXPLODES* So yes, the reason the Chrono series didn’t get in was because of jealous characters no one cares about, not because they didn’t get enough nominations. Anyway, SSB wins. Moltar’s Bracket Says: Super Smash Bros. will win. Moltar’s Prediction is: SSB: 74% - Dragon Quest: 26% Ulti’s Analysis SSB/M = Arguably the best fighting game series. Traditionalists be damned. Dragon Quest = Final Fantasy Lite, only with no name value. The only thing to look for in this match will be to see if SSB underperforms, to possibly set up a Sonic > SSB upset. But yeah, DQ stands no chance. Pity, too, because it's such an awesome (and underplayed) series. Prediction: SSB with 79.47% |
Master Moltar | Posted 7/12/2006 8:43:48 PM | message detail |
Soul’s Analysis Another easy match to call. SSB should win this one rather easily. Dragon Quest, as big as it is in Japan, is not so big here in North America. And even then, SSB is very popular over here, especially SSBM. My prediction: SSB wins with 75.67% of the vote. Leon’s Analysis Ah, here’s an interesting match. In one corner, you’ve got a fighting game (just let it slide for once, purists) featuring Nintendo all-stars, one of the biggest new series around in Super Smash Brothers. In the other corner, you’ve got the very definition of old school RPG in Dragon Quest. In reality, this match couldn’t be close, no matter how you slice it. Dragon Quest never really took off outside of Japan like Final Fantasy did, though the latest installment has sold decently well in the United States. Even though GameFAQs loves its RPGs, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a really strong one not in the Final Fantasy series, other than Chrono Trigger. And to win this match, Dragon Quest needs to be quite strong. Being middle of the road won’t cut it, but that’s about the best I can see it doing. The contest resume of Super Smash Brothers speaks for itself. Super Smash Brothers Melee won one of the most stacked and balanced divisions we’ve seen in any contest in the Games Contest, never winning any match with more than 57%, a tribute to how strong Division 128 was overall. Its power seems to demonstrate just how important keeping a series fresh is, and Dragon Quest has hardly done that. A lot of its installments have never crossed the American border (without being ported, that is), and before Dragon Quest VIII released last year, it had been four years since the previous game, and then you have to jump six more years back to get to the sixth game (and it wasn’t released outside of Japan either). In other words, Super Smash Brothers has this match well in hand and should just be a statement match to see if it can outdo its second round opponent. But take solace in this, Dragon Quest fans: If we were in Japan, this match wouldn’t even be close and we’d be talking about its imminent Final Four match with Final Fantasy that would ultimately decide the contest. Leonhart’s Prediction: Super Smash Brothers with 71.48% Yoblazer’s Analysis Here's our second of three open-and-shut cases in a row. As we have seen, the series with a small number of games have generally done poorly so far. As such, Super Smash Bros. may not be as strong as expected and could really be up against a fight with Sonic in the next round. However, it can breathe easy for now, as its opponent has absolutely no chance for the upset. If GameFAQs were a Japanese site, there'd be little question as to which series would take home the crown. In the land of the rising sun, Dragon Quest is a bonafide Godzilla. Its fanbase is huge, and its main games routinely outsell Final Fantasy, Mario, and Zelda. Unfortunately for it (and fortunately for its opponent), DQ is much more of a niche series here in the States. I'm not sure why, but it simply has never caught on in the Western Hemisphere. Dragon Quest VIII sold somewhat decently here and garnered attention on the site, but it's still far, far below Super Smash Bros. Melee's league. The most popular Nintendo game since 1998 will lead its series to a very comfortable win here. Super Smash Bros. + A beast of a title in SSBM + SSB, while somewhat forgotten, also has a large fanbase and fantastic sales - THAT'S IT! Dragon Quest + Squeenix RPG (It is a technically a Squeenix RPG now, right?) - Not many Americans seem to care My prediction: Super Smash Bros. def. Dragon Quest (70-30) |
Master Moltar | Posted 7/12/2006 8:44:30 PM | message detail |
HM’s Analysis I think this match is a prime example of “wasted potential” that seems to be shared amongst many people. Dragon Quest strikes me as a franchise that could have won a couple of matches, but got put in a position where it stands no chance of doing anything other than a respectable performance at best. Instead of just saying how much Dragon Quest is going to get beat, I thought it might be a good chance to show how Dragon Quest might out do the expectations in this one. There has not been hardly any opportunity to really get a good grasp on how many people at GameFAQs play Dragon Quest games, especially since a good deal of them have not released in America. However, there are a couple of polls about Dragon Quest VII that show off people showing an interest in the game … http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=495 http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=515 They are really old, and don’t have a lot of votes in them, but there are at least people showing that they want the game or at least have an interest. On a more recent note, Dragon Quest VIII performed pretty well in a more recent “PlayStation 2 Game of the Year” poll that was held at the beginning of the year … http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2247 It came in second with 21% and 12,400 votes, which is pretty good. I believe with the favoring toward RPGs, the fact that most of the series is obtainable through emulation, and that Dragon Quest VIII is a pretty big hit in both America and Europe goes to show that the series could put up some pretty solid numbers against something like Super Smash Bros. It is obvious that it stands no chance of winning whatsoever or even making the match remotely close, but I wouldn’t expect any type of major blowout here. I think Dragon Quest has its fans and they’ll be there come voting time. For Super Smash Bros., we know that it has a strong presence on this site. It’ll win this match with no problem and stands a really good chance at beating Sonic, too. This is basically a warm-up match for the big event in round 2. Super Smash Bros. wins this one without trouble, but Dragon Quest doesn’t just roll over completely. Aitch Emm’s Bracket Says: Dragon Quest will win. Aitch Emm’s Prediction: Super Smash Bros. 70% -- Dragon Quest 30% Aitch Emm’s Vote : Dragon Quest. HaRRich’s Analysis Predicted winner: Super Smash Bros. Top 100 List comparison: ---SSBM - #6 ---DQ - #77 Best Game Ever x-stat comparison: ---SSBM - 37.57% (128 Division champion) ---DQ - N/A (no rep) I know nothing about the DQ games, except that DQ8 was the runner-up for the PS2 GotY poll last year (noticably behind GoW, I believe). I see that the original DQ ranked at #77 on the Top 100 List, too, which was right behind the original Final Fantasy...and I believe they're both Square? *Googles it* Yep. So, like...it should do decent, sure, but SSBM is going to put it in its place. #6 on the site is no joke, and the original SSB is bound to be pretty popular too (although there's likely a big over-lap between the two). This match will be more for SSB to show off how it will fare against Sonic than for DQ to see how strong it is here. Super Smash Bros. wins with 67.12% |
Master Moltar | Posted 7/12/2006 8:45:31 PM | message detail |
Mnm’s Analysis Battle Music: Final Destination (SSBM) Super Smash Bros. is a series that’s been getting unfairly knocked during pre-contest discussion. People have been calling it overrated and people are also saying that it’s not much of a series, so it won’t be as strong. I simply will say I disagree. I may be the only person here that looks at this contest by brands, and Super Smash Bros. is a very popular brand. I don’t think it really matters that the game only has two games (with a third on the way). When one of your games is the sixth overall favorite game on this site, you are going to carry a lot of strength regardless. I won’t get too detailed, so I’ll finish talking about SSB in the next round. I feel sorry for Dragon Quest being stuck in this position. It is one of the few RPGs that I actually think deserves to be in this contest. And I’d easily take it over the likes of Suikoden, Harvest Moon, and Shadow Hearts, among others. It could have actually given something a decent match. The Dragon Quest series has roots dating all the way back to the original Dragon Warrior for the NES. Since then, it has gotten a niche fanbase due to primarily being a Japanese RPG, but I believe that fanbase is very dedicated to it. It also has gotten a fairly recent big release in DQVIII, which was marketed very well and seen all over magazines. DQVIII is actually pretty popular on GameFAQs. It got runner up in the PS2 GotY poll, outdoing the likes of Soul Calibur III and Shadow of the Colossus. It’s a shame that DQ is stuck against SSBM. =( DQ will still do pretty well in this match, even though it’s destined to lose. Bracket: Super Smash Bros. Vote: Super Smash Bros. Prediction: SSB with 78.74% Lopen’s Analysis Ah, the dream match everybody's been waiting to see. The team of Mario, Link, Samus, and Kirby against the team of Dragon Quest hero, DQ4 Hero, DQ8 hero… and Sir Chris's favorite… the DQ5 hero. No… no… that's not it. That's not it at all. Alright, I'm just gonna cut straight to the point here. Maybe if this match were held in Japan, we'd have a bit of tussle. But here, where a good 80% of the vote comes from America? Not a chance. The series just isn't a big hit here. Hell, we don't even know what this Dragon Quest is. We always called it Dragon Warrior. Oh, it sounds like I'm joking, but I'm really only half joking. Are all of the casual fans of the Dragon Warriors 1-7 (as few as there are) going to even make the connection between the two series? There's a bloody good chance I wouldn't have been able to had I not come here… but then again I'm not what you'd call a big fan, either. I'd say this is a very real factor, but it doesn't much matter anyway, considering what it's going up against. Speed Bump Quest will get no respect from me here. Lopen's Prediction: Smash Brothers with 74.17%. Comments: The Crew is siding with SSB on this match...obviously. |
