FF6 is even closer to FF7 than FFX, and its characters are about as weak as you get. I can't buy that.

It's hard to even come to a conclusion about who the main character in FF6 was, however. Giant ensemble casts, even if the characters are relatively cool, tend to not do so well.

Devil May Cry (PS2, 2001)

Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening (PS2, 2005)

Analysis:

Every time Dr. Robotnik is at it again, whether he is kidnapping animals or trying to steal the Chaos Emeralds Sonic and friends are there to stop them. You must go through various levels and defeat Robotnik’s Robot Army. Don’t forget Sega does what Nintendont. About 2000 years before DMC took place the Devil was trying to take over the human world, but Sparda, a devil knight decided to help the humans and defeated the Devil’s army and sealed the Devil. After the war he lived on Earth and had a child. 2000 years later and it’s time for Sparda’s son to save the world.

Out of all the matches so far this one has had the least amount of talk, but then again what is there to talk about? Sonic will have no trouble beating DMC. Like all of the new series that have had matches so far DMC will probably perform worse than what we first expected, but since we are expecting it, it won’t be as much as a surprise. Not much to talk about before the match, but there will be a lot to talk about during the match Sonic/SSB wise.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Sonic the Hedgehog over Devil May Cry

charmander6000’s Prediction: Sonic the Hedgehog wins, 64.17% - 35.83%

I almost like the 'recency' argument for the dropping of games, if only for the reason that it seems like it's a "It's no one's fault!" explanation of resolving the apparent discrepancy.

But I can't accept it. Now granted my personal observations can only go so far, but I can't bring myself to believe that GTA could fall THAT far as to put itself on even ground with WarCraft. Maybe WarCraft goes out and does spectacularly against Mario next round and proves it's a powerhouse, but I really, really doubt it.

Have you been away from GF for awhile? FF6 ranked high in the top 10 because the people who support it do so highly. In terms of the general FF fanbase, though, it already lost a lot of ground to FFX. I wouldn't be surprised if FF8 surpassed it soon, though the vote split caused by FF12 (which obv would hurt FF6 less than 7+) might prevent that.

I was referring to FF6 > FFX in the SpC2k4 X-Stats, not the list.

And the 'ensemble cast' argument has always been prevalent, but I've never quite understood how FF6's characters could be that weak. The strongest character from one won a contest, the strongest from the other is barely above fodder. Sure, FFX gives me my suspicions, but looking at FF6 it's hardly concrete.

Well, it's a combination of not just FFVI having a large cast, but FFVI having a large likable cast. You won't have a decisive favorite, and that could hurt it. I mean, every FF game from FFVII on has a decisive favorite. FFVI does not.

*COMPARISONS GAME- (3) Sonic the Hedgehog vs. (6) Devil May Cry*

Sales

DMC and DMC2 both sold very well, but they can't stand up to the sheer magnitude of the Genesis Sonic games.

Advantage: Sonic

Hype

Sonic:

Always has people talking about him. People just can't get enough of his annoying, pretentious "attitude" and the "speed" each game offers, despite the fact that you usually only go fast in the first zone and then it's slow, boring, repetitive platforming for the rest of the game.

Devil May Cry:

Hasn't had a release in over a year. DMC3 got a decent amount of attention upon release, but this is just a series whose popularity rises and falls dramatically in proximity with each release.

Match 11 - Sonic vs Devil May Cry

This is one of the more important matches to watch in the first round. Mainly because it will give us an idea of who the favourite will be in one of the highly debated second round matches.

In one corner we have Sonic - the mascot of Sega since the days before t'internet, with a myriad of games now being enjoyed again due to classic re-releases (I'd probably have beaten half of the Mega Collection by now but I'm addicted to Sonic Spinball), although recent games haven't been quite as popular as Sonic's early 90's zenith.

Then we have Devil May Cry - a popular enough modern series that instinctively should be a solid midcarder, capable of winning against half of the series in the contest. There's been murmurings that DMC might be able to pull off the upset here, but I think that's way too optimistic - we'd be talking Magus/Knuckles level of upset if it made it.

Previous form? Sonic 2 made the games contest, but was blown out of the water by Super Mario World. I've maintained SFF from day one over the level of defeat there and it seems as if only recently people are coming to think that way as well. Although that is in the context of suggestions of even more ridiculous forms of SFF than I'd give a moment's thought to. Sonic's characters are alright - Sonic himself is still just about top tier, Knuckles and Shadow are useful, and Tails... well if Tails ever makes another contest it'll be too soon. Dante is pretty consistent and we know where he is.

Sonic should take this one. It's not going to blow DMC away, but it's not going to be close either.

Bracket says: Sonic
Favourites bracket says: Sonic
Vote says: Sonic
Prediction: Sonic with 61.68%

Fun fact for the day: jonthomson is looking for a way to antivote both options if Tails ever faced Yoshi in a contest.
