GTA is casual, sure. Maybe it's not as good as FF/Mario Bros/LOZ but hell it's a better series than Warcraft. I wouldn't go there, but GTA games are sure as hell better than WoW will ever be. ~*ST*~ --- Winner of the Spring 2004 "Best. Game. Ever." What I don't get is that Vice City scored almost 47% aganist SSBM. 10th in the x-stats, IIRC. And according to the top 100 list, Vice City is only the 3rd most popular GTA. So shouldn't the series be even more popular than that? 3 possibilities. 1) GTA has lost a lot of popularity with the rising vote turnout 2) Warcraft is a major popularity beast. What I've learned from this contest: 1. Never go against your original instincts (Bye oracle) 2. Never predict a relatively new series over an older series. Halo and GTA come to mind. 3. Never ever predict something will be strong without proof from a previous contest. Top 10s mean nothing. Top 100 games mean nothing. Board traffic means nothing. 4. Christ, this match is nearly 10000 votes ahead of the other matches at
the time. I expected some rallying, but I didn't think it would be this
much. Heh, take away 10K votes from Warcraft and GTA leads with 55.75%. (And no, I'm not saying that this happened) Oh well, once the extra support is gone when SMB faces Warcraft, it's going to look ugly. I figure Asia kept Warcraft alive overnight, and the downtime helped it out during the day, so lets see where the match goes now. I'm also wondering what Ceej is going to say on this match. The only way GTA might win this is if Ceej finds cheating, which is pretty sad considering the high hopes we had for it. --- Moltar Status: Disappointed, I lost my perfect bracket. Also, I wouldn't say the board is getting 'owned' at all, at least any
more than it was on Castlevania/Halo. GTA/Warcraft was the second most
popular BOP upset (and was #1 for a long time). That's like saying the
board is going to get owned if Mario Kart beats Mega Man. --- Commit it to memory. |

GTA inspires more apathy and/or resentment than anything else I've
seen. Apathy because many people simply don't care about it. And
resentment because even though many people play it and consider it a
good game, get weary of casuals who walk around touting how IT IS DA

Karma I'm not sure I agree...I mean, I know it's caused a lot of heat
in the gaming industry, but it's holding its own against War Craft, and
I forgot to take into consideration to WoW fan-base when I submitted my
bracket... In any case, while some do resent GTA, there are also a lot of die hard fans of the series as well. So I don't think it's completely handicapped. |
Karma Hunter | Posted 7/11/2006 12:33:32 PM | message detail |
You say "holding its own against WarCraft" as though WC were some kind
of force to be reckoned with here. But the thing is, every piece of
data we have says it isn't -- signs point to GTA tanking and WC taking
advantage, not WC catapulting over a juggernaut. I may very well be wrong, but we can see how WarCraft does next round against Mario. It has no chance to win, so the important thing will be to look at the percentages. --- Commit it to memory. |
Slowflake | Posted 7/11/2006 12:34:15 PM | message detail |

What I don't get is that Vice City scored almost 47% aganist SSBM. Something close to SSBM or Metroid. 3) wtf hax 4. SSBM is overrated. Halo, Soul Calibur, and now GTA, which is not behind Starcraft, have underperformed relative to their 2004 performances. Kingdom Hearts has also had a questionable performance, albeit against an unknown. Moreover, MGS should be comfortably stronger than MGS2, and even a reasonable amount of SFF in FFVII/MGS, it is still not much stronger than MGS2 in the stats. SSBM barely beat FFX, even with an unfair picture. And while characters =/= games, FFX is much closer to FFVII in the stats than any character from it is to Cloud. SSBM's 37% against FFVII made Division 128 look the strongest of all the divisions. That seems a bit odd given the dominance of older series thus far this contest, and the fact that of the 6 strongest games on the site, the newest one is Ocarina of Time, made in 1998, and the average age falls between Final Fantasy VI in 1994 and Chrono Trigger in 1995. Halo, Wind Waker, GTA:VC, MGS2, Kingdom Hearts, Soul Calibur- would these games really get 30-35% on FFVII? Would they really to be able to beat or have a close match with such games as Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy Tactics, Street Fighter 2, and Goldeneye? And as far as Starcraft overrating them goes, the problems are not just on SC's half of the division, and moreover, seem too large for SC's vote rallying/stuffing to overcome. How many more votes did SC really rally/cheat against SSBM than against Halo? Furthermore, FFVII/SSBM follows a pattern of overperformance with precedent. 1. Link/Magus was Nintendo vs. Square, with one being among the strongest competitors on the site, and the other being supported enough by the other fanbase so as to get mid-30s to low 40s. Note that Magus had had a close match with Ganon before this, and Ganon a close match with Tidus. 2. Bowser broke 40% on Sephiroth, inciting many to believe that the SC2K5 champ could beat Sephiroth. Another Nintendo/Square match resulting in an overperformance with the loser ranging from mid-30s to low 40s. 3. The next day Ganondorf also overperforms against Sephiroth, with similar circumstances. 4. Sephiroth may have overperformed against Link in 2002, following close matches against Megaman and Samus. Again, a Nintendo/Square match with the loser in themid-30s to low 40s range. 5. While this doesn't fit the other characteristics, Frog, after having 2 very close matches against Liquid Snake and Master Chief, overperforms heavily against Solid Snake. Now, SSBM, the Nintendo game, had a pair of close matches before facing FFVII, the Square game: against FFX, where it won the day vote to win the match, but did not break either 2000 votes or 51%, and of course, against Starcraft, where it was actually losing by a small amount at the beginning, as did Wind Waker, leading me to think the extra rallying/stuffing in that match is far less than has been said. If SSBM really did win by 10,000 votes, then either it has a far far far better day vote than Wind Waker, or Starcraft had more rallying/stuffing against WW, which doesn't help out SSBM's cause either. Starcraft, of course, had 2 really close matches beforehand. After emerging victorious in those 2 matches, SSBM then puts up a respectable 37% against FFVII. |
red sox 777 | Posted 7/11/2006 12:34:21 PM | message detail |
So, perhaps SSBM is the game we should be blaming for messing up the
division 128 stats, moreso than Starcraft. I'd put SSBM down to around
32-33% on FFVII, at least in 2004. I do think SSBM is quite a bit
stronger now, though, because of the Nintendo boost, because it has
aged very well, and because it has continued to gain more sales and new
players/owners since 2004 than other older Gamecube games. --- July 2006 Contest --- Score: 8/9 --- Rank: T-3078 Today's Pick: Grand Theft Auto --- Vote: Warcraft |
