So yeah, remember when people in the stats topic kept arguing that Madden would have been a killer dark horse pick had it been in a better spot on the bracket?

I've played (and loved) every Madden game to death since 1992, and I was quietly laughing the whole time :)

Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

...God dammit Halo. I presume I'm out of the Guru challenge thanks to that x_X. That's the second time in two contests I've been talked out of an eventually correct pick. First was by the whole board last year, with Knux/Magus, and then this. Thanks a lot, HM >_>

Every match has broken 100k so far, which is cool. Predictable that SH/FE was the lowest, but it still broke the barrier.

That was me... yet I picked SMB with one of the higest percenatges out of anyone. I still think a Madden game could fair pretty well in a contest setting (fodder line well), but the way voters have been voting (Based on the actual series merits, despite the fact that we never give the voters enough credit), combined with it going up against SMB, one of the best and most notorious series of all time, makes it incredibly weak. Hell right now SMB is doing worse than I predicted, granted I wouldn't call it an underperformance either.

Also, don't want a new discussion to break out in here before the other one hits 500, but you know, I couldn't help myself.

Match 10 - Grand Theft Auto vs Warcraft

What a waste. This match is a huge waste of two franchises, considering the types of fodderific matches and walkovers that we've had up to now. On the one hand we've got Grand Theft Auto, which pretty much polarises the boards but has had multiple massive games of recent, and then we've got Warcraft, the one series in the contest which could either crash and burn horribly, or end up being a Starcraft-style dark horse. Either way, they don't make it out of the four pack they're in. If we swap, say, Warcraft for Pokemon, we not only have a massively comical match right here, but the potential for somewhat of a run and a potential upset. Oh well.

So what to make of it? GTA's huge, no question about it, and one of the second tier of series that has a legitimate shot at 4th place. Vice City ran SSBM close, it's since had San Andreas, and has the earlier installments and other spinoffs like Liberty City Stories. Warcraft has had a steady series and now has World of Warcraft, which people seem to love or hate. Its potential strength has a wide margin for error. This is obvious to most people. It could get blown out of the water. We've also had people account betting for it.

It's one of the more interesting matchups of round 1, between two big "casual" series. I'm tempted to say that it'll be fairly close, but GTA will have no real trouble. Regardless of how badly the characters have performed, board 8 is one of the few places that has real hate for GTA which may distort views. Needless to say, whoever wins gets killed in the next round, but for now I tip Rockstar over Blizzard.

Bracket says: Grand Theft Auto
Favourites bracket says: Grand Theft Auto
Vote says: Grand Theft Auto
Prediction: Grand Theft Auto with 54.47%

Fun fact of the day: jonthomson is still gloating somewhat that he was the only person to pick Pacman > Ocelot in the prophet challenge.

Warcraft has, roughly, a million players on the WoW servers. If you thought bnet was bad, wait until you combine bnet (still very popular) and the WoW realms.

In pretty much a make or break pick, I got WoW in the Final Four, over Mario. That happens, I win. That doesn't, I wasn't going to win anyways.

Match X: (4) Grand Theft Auto vs. (5) Warcraft

ames in series

Grand Theft Auto (PS, 1998)
Grand Theft Auto 2 (PS, 1999)
Grand Theft Auto: London, 1969 (PS, 1999)
Grand Theft Auto III (PS2, 2001)
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2, 2002)
Grand Theft Auto Advance (GBA, 2004)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2, 2004)
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (PSP, 2005)

Warcraft: Orcs and Humans (PC, 1994)
Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness (PC, 1995)
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (PC, 2002)
World of Warcraft (PC, 2004)

Analysis:

Grand Theft Auto, a game as the media put it where you steal cars and kill hookers. >_> Ever since the release of the series (though mostly after GTA3) the media and people such as Jack Thompson have trying to ban GTA. The reason why people love this game is because you have the freedom of doing whatever you want and completing the missions how ever you want. So you could use a hooker and then kill her, but at no point does the game tell you to do so. Warcraft is a PC series made by Blizzard and it has the best chance of making it to Round 2. In Warcraft you follow the story of a war with many different characters and surprises.

At first there wasn’t much talk about this match, but as bracket predicting was coming to a close the match started to get more and more talk. The biggest reason why people think Warcraft could upset GTA is through vote rallying. Like Starcraft did in 2k4 people are predicting that the Warcraft boards will be packed with people advertising to go to GameFAQs and voting. I think people are putting too much stock into how much people will be rallying for this series. Starcraft was a 16 seed with a chance of upsetting the 1 seed Halo and as soon as the match started and people saw how close Starcraft was winning and later in the day losing people began to find out that every vote counts and began to rally. So unless Warcraft starts out going 50/50 with GTA don’t expect a whole lot of rallying. Starcraft also got a huge advantage once the poll was moved because people who came from Bnet and other sites were actually looking for the poll.

Grand Theft Auto isn’t out of the wood works yet. Even though it had games during the Playstation era the games wasn’t as popular as the games are now and many people consider the series to be from the current gen and many series from this gen haven’t done so well. Soul Calibur lost by more than expected, Halo lost and Kingdom Hearts “underperformed”. Some people say that because of the newness of the series and they aren’t as establish as a series compare to others even though they have strong games as shown from the games contest (Though this may be because they were all in the same 4-pack as Starcraft). I’m not saying Warcraft it an established series, but GTA should watch out.

In the end Grand Theft Auto should win easily, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Warcraft pulled a Starcraft and won the match with a lot of rallying. Too bad the winner has to be wasted on SMB. If this match was switched with FE/SH it would have made the division one crazy division.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Grand Theft Auto over Warcraft

charmander6000’s Prediction: Grand Theft Auto wins, 56.12% - 43.88%

Let's talk about ES/SF. I think ES will slaughter SF, because SF is a series everyone is tired of, much more so than Sonic. ES, on the other hand, has the hugely successful Oblivion recently out, a ton of people coming to GameFAQs looking for Oblivion FAQs, and the possibility for series vote rallying.

It should be a blowout, 70-30.

Who's tired of Street Fighter? Get your facts straight. Street Fighter is still a popular series. Elder Scrolls may be a popular game, but its fanbase is still niche. Everybody has played a Street Fighter game. I don't see how Elder Scrolls can actually win that fight. Street Fighter would actually have to be pretty pathetic to lose that.
