Exactly. Metal Gear for the win!

Indeed. It seems to have had no problem at all making up that 10 minute or so down time. And Mario's basically carrying these vote totals itself. Mercy.

I wasn't exactly thinking of Metal Gear...

...anyway, the point is, I respect what Mario's done for the industry, but if I hated the games, I wouldn't be supporting it, let alone voting for it.

Personally, I'll go with a series that beat standards over a series that set them... but meh.

Which means Castlevania > Metroid > Mario, so your argument totally defeats your motive there. Unless you bring 3D into it, in which case Metroid just whips everything.

Wow at Mario today.

Just a thought, we've said we underestimate the voters a few times; what if the notion that "no series deserves it more than mario" is more widespread than we think?

It's possible that this was the notion behind Mario winning SC2K5.

Of course, people thought that would carry him to victory in SC2K2, and we saw how that worked out. Just can't see SMB beating out Final Fantasy. Honestly, it makes up a quarter of the top 20 on the list. The amount of diversity and yet unity at the same time is astounding.

Zelda/Civilization - 63862
Metal Gear/Soul Calibur - 65805
Castlevania/Halo - 66808
Kingdom Hearts/Harvest Moon - 64721

Super Mario Brothers has 63665 individual votes.
The Legend of Zelda had 57142 individual votes.

This one is looking to break all kinds of records.

I agree... which is sad, because as of this point in time, if Mario had 500 more votes, and Madden 500 less, then Mario would have 93.3% of the vote. Making him even closer to breaking Snake's record. There have been so many topics talking about voting for Madden because of the pic, and people agreeing that they did the same. Hell Madden was rocking the board vote. >_>

Why is everyone rooting for Mario now?
Today's performance means we need to root SSB or Zelda to SFF Mario in order to make sure Madden gets Jay Solanowned.

Just because this is quite interesting, I'll repost what I said in another topic about what happened to every entrant that broke 90% before:

Megaman 2002: Breaks 90% twice before barely losing to Sephiroth.

Link 2003: Breaks 90% on AiAi with a Wind Waker pic, underperforms like mad against Magus, fails to SFF Samus significantly and loses to Cloud.

LoZ 2004: Biggest blowout of all time, still loses to SMB3.

LttP 2004: Breaks 90% on Gunstar Heroes, barely beats FF6 and barely loses to Chrono Trigger.

Snake 2004: Beats Tanner in the legendary manner that we know, has his worst showing against Knuckles, almost loses to Frog, gets thrashed by Megaman worse than the previous year.

Pretty meh record, really.

Not-So-Bold Prediction: Super Mario Brothers will surpass 111K.

At 16:00 yesterday,
Kingdom Hearts had 57,581 votes, 70.45% of its eventual total(81,729).
Harvest Moon had 21759 votes, 72.41% of its eventual total(30,051).

At 16:00 last Monday,
Megaman X had 54,609 votes, 73.53% of its eventual total(74,270).
Suikoden had 20693 votes, 73.86% of its eventual total(28,018).

At 16:00 on another big blow out,
The Legend of Zelda had 70,988 votes, 70.87% of its eventual total(100,163).
Civilization had 8,193 votes, 73.35% of its eventual total(11169).

At 16:00 today,
Super Mario Brothers currently has 78,035 votes.
If the series has 70% of it's total votes, it will end with 111,479 votes
If the series has 73% of it's total votes, it will end with 106,897 votes.

The fact that it missed 2 updates leads me to believe that it will be no higher than 73% and closer to the 1st figure than the 2nd.

Add SMB Sp2006: Crushes NFL Madden in the highest vote ever garnered by a single entry(not even close), but squeaks through SSB in an unconvincing victory and fails to get 40% on FF.

So I heard talk of Blitz. You guys think Blitz would outdo Madden here? I'd be kinda surprised if it didn't at this point.

I'm also having a feeling that there might be some sanity to the SMB > FF upset pick. Not really because of this match, though it is impressive... more because of Castlevania. Just pay attention to Sonic, Mega Man, and Street Fighter here... and see how nostalgia fueled our voting base is.

Well, you still have a good deal of people who have played the original Final Fantasy (and by extension, FFIV and FFVI). There will still be nostalgia there, too.

Yeah, the whole old-school nostalgia thing works wonders, and if people were actually expecting something like GTA or SSB to take down SMB they would be pretty screwed at this point (oh wait, there are, sucks to be them!). But both Zelda and Final Fantasy have that same love and nostalgia working for it, with a startling amount of people having played the originals when they came out. Hell, quite a few seem to have played the original MG, which is why I think it could give SSB much more of a fight than I did at the beginning of the contest (GTA is still likely out of reach...though it'll be easier to tell after we see it in action tomorrow).

The matches to look out for are Mega Man/Mario Kart, Castlevania/Kingdom Hearts, and Sonic/SSB. If Mega Man and Castlevania can win each with around 53-55%, I'd be pretty wary of SSB's chances.

Well, granted we really don't know what will happen in a direct matchup of GTA/Metal Gear. GTA definitely should be indirectly stronger, but we don't know how intangible factors play into it. In all honesty, the whole Snake in SSBB probably tilted the favor to Metal Gear, seeing how Snake is the buzz among the Nintendo fanbase now...

You know the kinda people that come to these Stacy concerts, these dudes have got energy to spare. I'm talking guys who beat off four times a day!
Karma Hunter | Posted 7/10/2006 1:47:51 PM | message detail
Eh...maybe that work better for Snake himself, but I doubt that is going to give an edge to the Metal Gear series...or if it does give an edge, it would only be one worth discussing if the two were already 50/50 in the first place. As of now I see GTA beating MG with around 53-55%, so I wouldn't bother with that at all.

Now, what might be worth actual discussion is if Metal Gear is uniformly preferred among the Playstation fanbase. I mean, we've already seen at least two hints toward there being a hierarchy (FFVII > MGS > KH), and it's not exactly like MGS and KH are very similar to begin with...

If GTA were to actually lose to Warcraft, or even let it get close, I'd call MG > GTA in a heartbeat. Yeah, that's how seriously I take WC's "rallying" power.

LeonhartForever | Posted 7/10/2006 1:49:45 PM | message detail
Metal Gear Solid was one of the big Playstation pushers, so I think it'd be 3rd in the hierarchy, at worst. Perhaps beaten out by GTA, but by no other than Final Fantasy.

Well I counted that under intangibles as well. I just didn't feel like listing every single thing that can go in Metal Gear's favor in a direct matchup. I think the PS2 tiering would play the biggest factor in the matchup though. Even though signs point to GTA being higher on that tier, we never know. I'd still take GTA in that matchup, mind you. I just wouldn't be surprised if Metal Gear took it out.

Well you can tell how much Warcraft's "mighty rallying" is helping by the vote totals. If GTA beats Warcraft 53-47 and there were 140000 votes cast or something, you can't fault GTA for that.
