We're in the middle of a contest and we're having an insane match that
makes, by way of 'common sense' rather than hard facts, SMB look
stronger than LoZ and all you guys can talk about is who controls an
"alt"? And worse still, the "accused" isn't exactly known for hiding
things from people. Blech. --- Take a hike, and don't forget the trail mix *****. Hijack - MC Chris Detective in Sir Chris' Police |

Um...a little late, but has this been pointed out yet? 2k5 Gear Division 1-Seed: Solid Snake 2-Seed: Sora 6-Seed: Alucard Alucard beats Kratos 55-45, Sora fails to meet expectations against Agent 47. Sora beats Alucard 55-45 in Round 2. Snake nearly doubles Sora in Round 3. 2k6 Snake Division 1-Seed: Metal Gear 2-Seed: Kingdom Hearts 3-Seed: Castlevania Castlevania beats Halo 55-45, Kingdom Hearts fails to meet expectations against Harvest Moon. Castlevania and Kingdom Hearts are slated to meet in the second round. The winner will face Metal Gear. --- Commit it to memory. |

I'd really expect LoZ to perform even better on Madden than this, even
if Madden could edge out Civ. No one here really wants to vote for
Madden, and fodder has a tendency to fluctuate wildly in some cases. --- Commit it to memory. |
LeonhartForever | Posted 7/9/2006 11:25:25 PM | message detail |
Yes, the connection has been made on more than one occasion. Well, not in respect to their performances, but whatever. Even so, whatever the case may be, I don't see Mario being able to outdo Zelda. Even on an old Favorite Nintendo Series poll, Zelda got 50% to Mario's 25. --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |

I was talking with somebody yesterday about Sora-Alucard-Snake.. wasn't
in here though. I'm amazed more people haven't talked about
Sora-Alucard actually. I won't use it as proof that KH > CV, but
it's something to think about. --- xyzzy |

Not to instill doubt before we've even seen it in action yet, but in
terms of the board versus the casuals it looks like LoZ/FF may be like
Mario/Samus (though that's not to say FF won't win, and it certainly
won't get crushed). From my observations out of all the casuals that
have come to the board recently discussing the contest, an overwhelming
number have Zelda winning, even despite personal preference...which is
the opposite of this board, which has the majority picking FF but with
many preferring Zelda. Now, obviously this is purely anecdotal and
predictions have little to do with the actual outcome...but I'd expect
the total prediction percentage and the BOP to be polar opposites,
whoever wins. --- Commit it to memory. |
LeonhartForever | Posted 7/9/2006 11:31:17 PM | message detail |
Well, it's not necessarily a good example because their series are so much more than they are. The question is...by how much? --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |
LeonhartForever | Posted 7/9/2006 11:31:59 PM | message detail |
The casuals always pick Zelda, no matter what happens. --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |
Karma Hunter | Posted 7/9/2006 11:32:39 PM | message detail |
I was talking about the Sora/Alucard parallel earlier...it's hard to
say. On the one hand, Alucard simply seems to be more liked than clown
shoes, especially pre-KH1. But I'd say Sora is also much closer to his
series' strength by being the main character of every game, while
Alucard only holds a notable role in one. It's a tough call. --- Commit it to memory. |
LeonhartForever | Posted 7/9/2006 11:38:02 PM | message detail |
Mario seems to be pulling 92-93% updates with regularity right now. --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |
Karma Hunter | Posted 7/9/2006 11:38:57 PM | message detail |
If we actually see Mario *more* favored with the day vote, it could get
really ugly here. Then again, that would be a first for this
contest...predictable vote swing... --- Commit it to memory. |

LeonhartForever | Posted 7/9/2006 11:40:51 PM | message detail |
Yeah, the Europeans don't care about football now. The World Cup is over. But it is natural to assume that this would be Madden's worst time and we could expect it to do better during the day. Of course, we said the same thing about Halo. --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |
Tatsumaki Senpuu | Posted 7/9/2006 11:42:12 PM | message detail |
Both series are more liked than any singular character, but in Alucard's case, I can see Castlevania being really far ahead of him. Sora seems like he's closer to the series strength than Alucard at least. Castlevania was extremely impressive against Halo, even taking away the day vote from that monster. Kingdom Hearts brought in a lot of votes, but its performance against Harvest Moon of all games wasn't particularly impressive. I think Castlevania has what it takes to take care of Kingdom Hearts by about 53%, which makes KH stronger than Halo, but still nets CV a good win. Castlevania does have games on the home console of Kingdom Hearts, along with every other console imaginable. So that may help it out when the match rolls around -- I'm sure it helped it against Halo. Another positive to be a long running, well established franchise against a relatively new series. --- "Building the future and keeping the past alive are one in the same thing." -- Solid Snake |
ChichiriMuyo | Posted 7/9/2006 11:44:11 PM | message detail |
CV is clearly much more than Alucard. By a lot. Look at how badly it
beat Halo. If we went by Sp2k4 results and adjusted SotN for OoT/007 it
still would have lost to Halo. The series draws strength from a lot
more than SotN. As for KH, well, aside from myself* I think most people just can't grasp that bad heroes are still the best character from a game. Basically, KH performs in line with how it should according to Sora and a lot of people jump to the conclussion that it's weak. Seriously, Sora is obviously not that hated by the KH fanbase. At this point, I think either can take it. Considering the 2k4 results, unless the KH2 boost was noticably bigger than the Halo 2 boost (which I certainly believe, though I fear to what degree it extends) CV could edge it out. *Note: I expected HM to be exceptionally weak and would have picked the Hitman series to beat it with full confidance, even on this site. To see it get that close to KH was a bit of a shock. But, if there was a direct correlation we'd still expect to see Hitman win, I suppose. --- Take a hike, and don't forget the trail mix *****. Tatsumaki Senpuu | Posted 7/9/2006 11:44:15 PM | message detail |
Madden's best time should be when casuals are running rampant on the
site ... but even then, Mario should still be favored by them. I can't
see the percentage going up or down much from where it is at now. It
wouldn't be particularly surprising, but the area its in now seems
right. --- "Building the future and keeping the past alive are one in the same thing." -- Solid Snake |
ChichiriMuyo | Posted 7/9/2006 11:48:21 PM | message detail |
"but in Alucard's case, I can see Castlevania being really far ahead of him" Doesn't help that he's only in a handful of them and it's a very long series (about 30 games, counting ports). He might be in the consensus favorite, but he missed the boat on pretty much every other game in the series (though that's how castlevania is). His other two appearances were of little concern. --- Take a hike, and don't forget the trail mix *****. Hijack - MC Chris Detective in Sir Chris' Police |

ChichiriMuyo | Posted 7/10/2006 12:04:50 AM | message detail |
My hope is that it'll surpass the aforementioned match. Frankly, the
pairing of the names Mario and Madden seem like they should do more for
vote totals than Kingdom Hearts and Harvest Moon. --- Take a hike, and don't forget the trail mix *****. Hijack - MC Chris Detective in Sir Chris' Police |

The Mario name alone could probably rake in the numbers necessary to beat out Kingdom Hearts and Harvest Moon. It's good to know that it's caught back up. KH/HM already outdid CV/Halo. Final Fantasy vs. Diablo are so polar in
nature that I figure it's going to be #1 for round one. Doesn't hurt
that the FF name is at least as big as the Zelda name (well, or bigger.
It's at least more well liked) and that the Diablo name is miles away
from Civilization in the right direction. --- Take a hike, and don't forget the trail mix *****. Hijack - MC Chris Detective in Sir Chris' Police |

Leonhart mentioned that this match started out at 2,000 or so votes
behind KH/HM (obvious reasons given the ten minute down time we
experienced), but as of the 8:35 AM EST update, SMB/Madden is ahead by
869 votes. Mario is pretty much pushing these obscene vote totals by
itself -- and is likely going to be the second entry ever to hit the
100,000 single vote total gained. I entertained the idea of Mario winning the contest a while back, and this whole blowout is seriously making me start to reconsider those thoughts.
