We're getting something even more extreme in Castlevania/Halo.

Sadly I don't think Castlevania would take the lead at the beginning (other than during the board vote.).

*COMPARISONS GAME- (4) Fire Emblem vs. (5) Silent Hill*

Sales

Fire Emblem has had 800k in cumulative sales Stateside. I don't know the exact number for all of the Silent Hill games, but I do know SH2 alone sold over 650,000. SH seems like the safe choice here.

Advantage: Silent Hill

Hype

Fire Emblem:

Path of Radiance was well-received, and the fanbase for the series just keeps growing. Not a huge amount of buzz for FE, but it's certainly more than...

Silent Hill:

...which has not had a new release since SH4 in 2004, which was widely considered a disappointment. Don't even bring up the movie; it received awful reviews from all parties and everyone forgot about it in a week.

Advantage: Fire Emblem

Board Odds Project

Match prediction:

Fire Emblem- 108
Silent Hill- 25

There are only two matches in the first round more contested: Halo vs. Castlevania (WTF?) and Grand Theft Auto vs. Warcraft. Nonetheless, still a very clear consensus for FE.

Advantage: Fire Emblem

Point value:

Fire Emblem- 110
Silent Hill- 25

Not much different here. As far as the strength of the contestants are concerned, this is the weakest match in the contest.

Advantage: Fire Emblem

Previous contest representation:

Fire Emblem:

Sp2004-

Fire Emblem (46th)

Top 100-

Fire Emblem (#54)

Silent Hill:

Sp2005-

Pyramid Head (29th)

Advantage: Fire Emblem

Intangibles

If SSBM doesn't exist, this match is a nailbiter. Unfortunately, SSBM does exist, so on top of RPG factor and Nintendo factor, it also has the factor of two characters appearing in a game that's sold far more than any Silent Hill game. And we've already seen the power of SSBM in these contests. Ness and Kirby, anyone?

Advantage: Fire Emblem

Conclusion

If Marth and Roy are in the match pic, FE wins handily. If they don't, FE still wins, but it'll be a struggle. FE with 54%.

Heh, I was thinking the same exact thing last night. One match where the match pic should be a big influence on who the casual will vote for, since they most likely don't care for either series. If Marth and Roy are in the pic, I can see Fire Emblem getting as high as 60%, but if not, Fire Emblem won't even break 55%.

I'd prefer the former...because this match is already reminding me of Vyse/Laharl for some reason, so it might as well play out as close to it as it can.

Also, Metal Gear sure is falling at the moment. I figured the casuals would favor Soul Calibur, but at this rate, SC could push itself above 30%.

Alright. Discuss these people who keep saying "omg Halo > KH" jibber jabber and how it makes any passable sense at all.

Because Halo has always been a stronger entity than KH in these contests and you're expecting KHII to completely make up the difference between the two while completely ignoring Halo 2, at the same time disregarding that SC is getting pounded into the ground right now? Honestly though, if you still want to believe KH is going to beat Halo I have no problem with it, but acting like Halo beating KH is impossible is just ludicrous.

Halo has had one match in a contest setting. Don't forget that it probably had massive rallying behind it to save brackets as well. And I'm not ignoring Halo 2, but Halo was already hugely popular among its fans. You can't say the same for Kingdom Hearts at all.

I'm not trying to say Halo > KH is a lock, I'm talking about hiko acting as though Halo defeating KH is absolutely impossible when everything that's happened in the past points to Halo winning. We've gone through this a million times, and I already know what you're going to say (you've already started), so I'd rather not get into the same circular debate as usual. I'm just waiting until the match for this one.

I'm just pointing out that it's not like we have tons of data on Halo in a contest setting either. I think Halo/Starcraft is a special case as the PC fanbase on this site isn't that big as well. I'm sure that there was a large amount of the voting population hadn't played either (or didn't care for either). We haven't seen how Halo performs against a widely played, popular console game.

Of course Halo/Castlevania will answer that, but I still have doubts on Halo in a contest setting...

I could be off, but it looks like Soul Calibur can take Metal Gear under 70% before everything is said and done. That would make the 1-seed's performance today very good, but not quite spectacular when compared to many of our Oracle picks (mine was 67%).

I have a feeling that FE is going to surprise us and get at least 65% on SH. All signs point to a blowout: massive votal increase goes towards Nintendo, Marth and Roy in SSBM, the Silent Hill movie sucking ass.

As for Halo/Castlevania, after Soul Calibur's weak performance today, I have a feeling that KH/Halo were a little bit weaker in '04 than we thought. But Halo 2 has come out since then, so I feel comfortable with my Halo pick. I also feel comfortable with Halo over Kingdom Hearts.

Alot of the anti-Xbox sentiment seems to have died down on this site, so I doubt antivotes would be a factor.

Killer day vote vs. series dropping against a fighting series during the day.

Still a very, very casual fighting series; it's not something that only the more hardcore people enjoy. And it's dropped about 2% since last night, right? Nothing that bad, and rather expected given Solid Snake's day vote, which was never too good, I don't think.

Why do I get the feeling that you're going to pull another megaman and have snake winning next years character contest?

If MGS4 and SSBB happen to come before the contest next year, you have no idea how tempted I'll be. We still haven't, technically, seen Snake after getting a Metal Gear Solid game with him as the main character. MGS3 was pretty much it, but still not Solid Snake. And then Snake being in SSBB practically forces him into an entirely different fanbase. Not just necessarily releasing on a Nintendo platform, but guaranteed to be in a game that sells millions and millions of copies and those people not necessarily being MGS fans. Good potential there, I think.

My 7 cents on FE/SH:

1. Silent Hill had no games in the GFAQs Top 100. Fire Emblem ranked around 50.

2. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=775
Silent Hill 2 loses to games such as Capcom vs. SNK 2, Dynasty Warriors 3, Gran Turismo 3 A-spec, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1424
Silent Hill loses to 'None of them'.

3. Fire Emblem gets into contests on its own. Silent Hill needs nomination rallying to get in at all.

4. Fire Emblem did respectably against FFTA. Despite B8's hatred of FFTA, it is a Final Fantasy game, and it will do well. Factor in that FFTA is also a strategy game on the GBA, and you're adding SFF to injury. FFTA also performed well against FFX in the next round, proving that it's no slouch. Silent Hill's claim to fame was getting Pyramid Head in the villains contest (thanks to rallying), and he performed like ass.

5. The movie will not mean anything on GFAQs. Period.

6. Fire Emblem has characters in SSBM.

7. Fire Emblem, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, and Fire Emblem: Path of Radience are all in their respective system's Top 10 Message Boards on GameFAQs. Silent Hill has no games like that. The Path of Radience board also has as many topics in it as all 4 Silent Hill games combined.

Fire Emblem wins with at least 60%.

Snake > Samus is about as high as I'll go in 2k7. And that's because I firmly believe MG would beat Metroid in the contest (especially after MGS4) and that SSBB basically negates the exposure Samus has to people who have otherwise not played her games. Mario and up...that's a pipe dream, though I'd love to see Snake give him a run. Too much Zelda/Final Fantasy/Mario SFF even if he got that high, though.

And I like the thinly veiled attempts at downplaying this match. This was never about Metal Gear winning (because we ALL knew it was going to win), this was about Soul Calibur getting exposed. This is about every time people said Soul Calibur > Street Fighter and didn't think twice about it, because they're so blinded by the X-Stats that they don't bother to think otherwise. Don't show me the Oracle picks, the picks from many people outside the stats topic who pay more attention to seeding and common sense than stats. Show me the Crew picks, which aside from CRAZY HM (and Moltar) were high 50's/low 60's.

This is about every time I had to hear how KH was a fantastic upset over MG and that we were fools for putting too much weight on Snake/Sora and not giving it its proper due. It never was, and if it wins or comes close you can throw this post right back in my face until the end of time. And it was never because of MG's strength, either, and I've said it enough times to be damn well known.

Don't downplay this match despite everyone having MG winning. If Magus had beaten Knuckles with over 70% of the vote Ulti would have been crowing, despite the fact that NO ONE took Knux over Magus. And it's not like you should call the contest after one match, as I should know. But Halo and KH are going to have to hope like hell it was just Soul Calibur fluking its near win against KH. Or that Halo 2/KH2 can make up a 20% differential.
Mac Arrowny | Posted 7/6/2006 11:23:55 AM | message detail
If thats true, then Halo is a Half Life spinoff.

Come now, everyone knows that Halo is a Marathon spinoff. Developers > Publishers.

I don't know... even though I think MG has it's division wrapped all up, Halo could make a nice run at it during the day provided that it takes out KH. Killer day vote vs. series dropping against a fighting series during the day.

We really have no idea how strong SC's day vote is. KH is the only game we've seen it against, and that game has a pretty good day vote. SF2's day vote is only great because of it's massive popularity in Europe. We really have no idea how other fighting games would do.

5. The movie will not mean anything on GFAQs. Period.

The Tomb Raider came out on the weekend of Zelda vs. Lara Croft, IIRC. The year after that, Lara dropped 8% in the stats. Do you really think that movies have no effect on GameFAQs?

I still can't understand how anyone is surprised about anything that's happened so far. MMX blowing out Suikoden, Pokemon doubling Star Ocean, Metroid blowing out Kirby (although that was a little iffy due to Metroid sucking at SFF so far), and Metal Gear blowing out Soul Calibur should have all been obvious.

Look, there was nothing silly about thinking Soul Calibur could do well and it has nothing to do with X-Stats.

Soul Calibur gave Kingdom Hearts a close match and that's nothing to sneeze at. Kingdom Hearts IS A POPULAR GAME on this web site. It was part of the massive influx of Square fans that changed the face of the contest in 2003. Look at Sora and Riku in the character contest. Just because Soul Calibur wasn't as popular as some people thought, doesn't excuse the fact that it was a viable possibility and doesn't make it any more "stupid."

Fair enough, but my entire point was Snake/MG has a notorious crappy day vote, and Halo a kickass one. Granted I don't think Halo will actually win, but it should stir up some fun on the boards.

You could make an argument for ANY game under those circumstances, from Street Fighter to Adventure. However, there comes a point when it becomes too ridiculous to believe, and when you have to realize it becomes less Soul Calibur's strength and more Kingdom Hearts' weakness (in 2k4, for mnm). Soul Calibur is a Dreamcast only fighting game. The voters aren't stupid, they know the difference between SC and SCII. And more importantly, they know that SC is a fighting game. I don't care how good it is, fighting games never have and never will have exceptional popularity on GameFAQs. The closest we've EVER had is Ryu, and he's a bloody icon.

Agree'd. I wouldn't take him over Link or Cloud, but anyone else I think could be fair game. Yeah, I know this is probably in the extreme minority, but Snake appearing on a Nintendo fan favorite? AWW HELLS YEAH. It'd be absolutely shocked if it wasn't the biggest boost we've ever seen by a character outside of the 2K2 to 2K3 shift, because well, 2K2 should just never count.

HM the thing you dont see is YES SSBB will help Snake. But the minute he faces Mario and Link, all that SSBB help will evaporate and he will be left with MGS4.

It doesn't evaporate the exposure he is given to Nintendo fans by being included in SSBB. He has an established fanbase outside of SSBB, and Metal Gear Solid 4 is going to do wonders for him by itself. But being exposed to a new fanbase certainly does not hurt. There is plenty of possibility that these very Nintendo fans see Snake and go out to find out more about him -- they'll likely be able to get some if that trophy system returns. The whole idea behind Kingdom Hearts helping Cloud was that people went out to go play Final Fantasy VII or found out more about Cloud and got him a boost. It's something similar here, except I find this to be even bigger because you are going to be in the game of a huge fanbase at GameFAQs.

You have people who otherwise wouldn't care about Snake showing an interest in him based off of his appearance in SSBB. Now, of course, this is just a few choice people I have seen -- there is already a large number of people here who have some sort of connection with Snake through MGS games. But I would imagine there are many more casual people like that, too. Snake, of all people, can really benefit from people finding out about and checking some things out. He's got a personality that a lot of people would love.

But, yeah, I think he's definitely going to secure the fourth strongest character in this contest after that. I would be taking him over Mario in 2007 for sure. So if for some reason there is another ToC enforced, Snake's got the championship, yo!!

I think people are underestimating the effect MP3 will have. Luigi's Mansion is still the #5 selling game on the GCN, and it had SSBM to compete against after two weeks. MP3 will have TP to compete against, true, but I can't see that being a much bigger game than SSBM. MP3 should be the biggest Metroid game ever, and Samus will get an enormous boost from it.

Snake isn't going to be beating Samus with Metroid Prime 3 being a launch game, and probably the highlight of the Wii controller so far. He'd better start working on finally beating Mega Man first!

If anything, actually, I'd think Metroid Prime 3 is going to suffer from "MGS2-itis" thanks to MP2. Yeah, I think you know where I'm going with this.

I think people are underestimating the effect MP3 will have. Luigi's Mansion is still the #5 selling game on the GCN, and it had SSBM to compete against after two weeks. MP3 will have TP to compete against, true, but I can't see that being a much bigger game than SSBM. MP3 should be the biggest Metroid game ever, and Samus will get an enormous boost from it.

... Metroid Prime 3? ... Against Metal Gear Solid 4? ... No.
