If Pokemon has more of the brackets than MMX my head is going to explode.

Geez, these votals are...crazy. How many matches do you think we'll have where we don't hit 100,000 votes. I'm inclined to say tomorrow's match, Fire Emblem/Silent Hill, and...uh...

On another note, what do you think the final votal in GTA/Warcraft will be?
Janus5000 | Posted 7/4/2006 8:08:04 PM | message detail
6075k.

If Pokemon has more of the brackets than MMX my head is going to explode.

Get some napkins ready then.

I'm foreseeing another Kirby/Ramza or Dante/Terra where there's a vocal upset crowd on the board, but the winner absolutely smashes the other when it comes to casual predictions.

You don't think Metroid/Kirby will get 100K? I definitely think it will, I agree with you on FH/SH though.

I just noticed that so far today's match has had higher vote totals than yesterday, and while I think Star Ocean is more popular than Suikoden, it's not a huge gap. Which means Pokemon is doing extremely well, even with a picture disadvantage.

That's it, I've made my mind up. If I win the Guru contest, we will see the triumphant return of PIKACHU!

It could be a lil' over 100,000...or it could be close to 200,000. It depends on the rallying, though I'm thinkin' it'll have the highest vote-total of this round at, say, 125,000.

Whoa, this match has 106k votes? THIS MATCH?! If Pokemon can draw 100,000 this easily, I think the only match that will fail to reach that milestone is Fire Emblem/Silent Hill.

I see Metroid/Kirby as being a Bowser/Kirby in terms of total votes. Good competitors, but because they're both Nintendo they get an abnormal amount of votes.

Well Star Ocean has joined PaRappa the Rappa as the only things anything Pokemon related has ever beaten.

I find that funny.

Im not but I do think MewTwo could be the next strongest character after Link, Mario, Samus, Bowser, Ganondorf, Zelda, Kirby, Luigi, Doney Kong, and Yoshi.

Maybe Peach, but I think there is a legit chance that MewTwo could beat Fox and Ness.

Also, FYI, if Star Ocean = Suikoden, Pokemon would get 36.03% on MMX right now.

Why wait for a match that completely revolves around SFF?

Simply because Pokemon has a good match against a series that may as well be crap (I know I was arguing against this before, but I didn't think it was as crappy as it was, still crap though), doesn't mean people should suddenly be calling for Pokemon to be some kind of strength house where Mewtwo is going to be contest gold.

Plus, I don't know how much SFF will really go on, everyone knows Metroid is no powerhouse when it comes to SFF, and Pokemon is a completely different type of series than Metroid. It's an rpg against a side scroller/adventure FPS. Sure they're both Nintendo, but if Samus can't SFF things that it's stronger than in the Nintendo series, that has a much stronger connection to it, then why would it SFF Pokemon?

Look MewTwo should enjoy the same benefits as Ness and Fox from SSB and Im not completely sure that Pokemon couldnt beat the Star Fox and Earthbound series in a straight up match. I mean Earthbound BARELY finished ahead of G/S/C who was burried behind SFF.

Karma Hunter | Posted 7/4/2006 8:21:21 PM | message detail
Uh, yeah Pokemon could beat Earthbound. Thing is, that's not where Ness gets his contest strength from.

And Mewtwo/Wario becomes uninteresting the moment SSBB comes out. Hell, Mewtwo might not even make it in the game.

I have played Baldur's Gate II.

In fact I just beat it 3 weeks ago. Only took me two and a half years...started in Jan. 04 according to my earliest save. Then I stopped in July 2004 because I didn't have the time to play games anymore (didn't realize it had been quite that long a hiatus). So it took just under 3 years to beat the series (started and finished BG1 from Aug 03-Sep 03). They've been the only non-multiplayer games I've really played in that time.

Heh. BGII took me five years to finish... basically, there were two or three different times when when I was basically stuck and stopped playing for a looong time. The first was in chapter 3, when I was trying to do some side quest, and there was a glitch where a certain character wouldn't talk to me. The other one I remember was in the underdark, when I kept getting killed by some Ulitharids. I finally beat it around 6 months ago. It was a good game, though.

Indeed.

This match doesn't speak to me of Pokemon's strength; rather, it's Star Ocean's horrible, horrible weakness. Mewtwo, who would be the strongest Pokemon, would still end up being in the area of fodder. No reason to get all crazy just because Pokemon's beating Star Ocean.

Oh, look, just like Pikachu, and he was a starting character in both SSB and SSBM. Mewtwo was a secret character in SSBM...

...don't make this a "secret" debate though; it's much more that Pikachu is in both games in the SSB series, and he's still weak.

I actually would bet against Jigglypuff being cut. She has one of the most original (and best) movesets, and is one of the original Smash Brothers from the N64. She probably stays as tradition.

Mewtwo was worthless in SSBM though, and not worth the time it took to get him. I won't be shedding any tears for his cut.

Match IV: (2) Metroid vs. (7) Kirby

Games in series

Metroid (NES, 1996)
Metroid II: Return of Samus (GB, 1992)
Super Metroid (SNES, 1994)
Metroid Prime (GC, 2002)
Metroid Fusion (GBA, 2002)
Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA, 2004)
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (GC, 2004)
Metroid Prime: Hunters (DS, 2006)

Kirby’s Dream Land (GB, 1992)
Kirby’s Adventure (NES, 1993)
Kirby’s Dream Land 2 (GB, 1995)
Kirby Super Star (SNES, 1996)
Kirby’s Dream Land 3 (SNES, 1998)
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64, 2000)
Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland (GBA, 2002)
Kirby Air Ride (GC, 2003)
Kirby & the Amazing Mirror (GBA, 2004)

Analysis:

To finish off this division we have an all Nintendo match that looks really good on paper, but will most likely be another boring match. In Metroid you play as Samus, a bounty hunter and your mission is to defeat the Space Pirates led by Ridley and destroy the new life form called Metroid. These Metroids are parasite type creatures that suck the life out of other life forms. In Kirby you play as Kirby as he stops the evil of King Dedede and bring peace throughout Dream Land. To do this Kirby has the ability to suck enemies up and steal their powers and use it against King Dedede’s forces.

Like I said this match looks good on paper, but Metroid is higher than Kirby on the Nintendo hierarchy. Also Kirby is one of those series that was really big during the 1990’s, but has died off since then. Metroid on the other hand had a break during the Nintendo 64 era, but came back over the past few years and even though there are some people from Classic Metroid that hate the Prime games there are also some who really like the direction the series took.

The only question is whether or not Metroid could SFF Kirby and if so by how much? The Nintendo matches Samus has been in were against Ganondorf and Mario. Against Ganondorf Samus didn’t really SFF him, but that may be because Zelda > Metroid in the Nintendo hierarchy, but Kirby was also able to avoid SFF against Bowser during that same contest and we all know Mario series > Kirby series. Maybe Kirby still has the strength to avoid SFF after all these years.

In the end I think there will be some SFF, but it won’t be huge like Mario vs. Donkey Kong, but still some that people will notice. As much as the board wants a close match they are going to have to wait for a few more matches because this one won’t be one.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Metroid over Kirby

charmander6000’s Prediction: Metroid wins, 65.72% - 34.28%
