If it is, why haven't we seen any representation from it yet? Why
did it fail to get on the drop-down list for the Top 100? I mean, if
the likes of the original F-Zero could get on that list (while Suikoden
II got #59 or so), then what does that say about Star Ocean? Gee, guys, why couldn't Mega Man get on the drop down list? Why couldn't Halo 2 get on the drop down list? Why couldn't a million other much stronger games get on the drop down list? Who the hell knows. The idea that Star Ocean missing the list speaks anything of its strength is ludicrous. I have been over and over and over why Star Ocean could not get any representation in the contest yet. I'll ignore the fact that not being the contest before speaks nothing of your potential strength for this little bit here. But Star Ocean 3 came out after the Games Contest and the Summer 2004 Contest -- right after it, in fact. The series did not gain a lot of popularity until Star Ocean 3 hit. Would I take Suikoden II over Star Ocean 2? Yes, probably. Would I take Suikoden II over Star Ocean 3? Hell no -- that wouldn't even be close. The following contest, Summer 2005 Contest, was met with plenty of rallies for characters. I think it was the first time we ever had a large rally like that for characters. People like Lloyd Irving were able to get in because of it. There was no such rally for someone like Fayt, or even if there was, it was not anything that lasted long enough. Board 8 has a number of people who love the game, but it simply wasn't one of those "fad" games like Tales of Symphonia was, which as far as I'm concerned speaks well for it not being a lame board creation. And, to top everything all off, it is facing Pokemon. No one is calling for Star Ocean to do the unthinkable and give Metroid a run. It has to beat one of the weaker series in this contest to move on. We have never seen it perform remotely well in these contests before. Suikoden is going to give Pokemon a good run if it faces it, and I see no reason to believe that Star Ocean is weaker than Suikoden ... at all. --- "Building the future and keeping the past alive are one in the same thing." -- Solid Snake |

I know this is probably obvious at this point, but it's really gonna
come down to how the voters view the series as a whole. Are they gonna
think of RBY and look at the series with some nostalgia, or are they
going to think about how it is now (i.e. being overexposed, like Lopen
said) and anti-vote it? Personally, I'm going with the former. RBY doing well on the Top 100 isn't something to be ignored. --- Organization XIII - Number III - Xordac Currently Playing - Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga, Capcom vs. SNK 2 |

Gee, guys, why couldn't Mega Man get on the drop down list? The people that were around to play Pokemon R/B when it first came are
probably a lot higher in number than people who played the archaic
Metroid >_> I would fully expect more people to have even played
Zero Mission than the original. Can't say the same for Pokemon R/B at all. --- ertyu and VeghEsther are truly proof that there is much about this world we still do not understand. |

And why not? Didn't RBY sell something like twice as many games?
Didn't Red beat Gold by something like 30 spaces on the top 100 list?
(Not trying to exaggerate the list but it's not something to just
ignore either) Because such a thing would try to say that R/B/Y gives Xenogears a tough fight, which I completely disagree with. It might do a bit better than G/S/C, but is it going to do much better? I really doubt it. Pokemon just reeks "if you played one you have played them all." Making it a series does not seem to me like it'd be much stronger than its strongest entry, which is definitely R/B/Y but not by much. And Pokemon R/B/Y sold three million more copies than G/S/C in America. Yeah, woohoo to that -- 11 million to 9 million. Also, I think RB would represent a "more innocent time" to some fans of the series. Before Pokemon was overexposed, basically. That's the reason most of the people hate it, you know? Well, I hate it because it sucks, but yeah, I understand what you're saying. That's why I think it's going to be a bit stronger, but not by much. --- "Building the future and keeping the past alive are one in the same thing." -- Solid Snake |

Because it has a heavily split fanbase (it's MM2 vs. MM3 vs. MMX,
with the odd people who like MM5/MMX2 the best), unlike SO, where about
90% of the series' popularity comes from one game? ... That has absolutely nothing to do with it being on the drop down list ... There were only two games that made it in as write-ins -- Halo 2 and Tales of Symphonia. Notable is that ToS was a "big" game here during the time of that list. Halo and ToS also were extremely low even when they did make it in. They were in the 80s, I believe. If it wasn't being talked about on the board, then as far as I'm concerned, it wasn't popular on the board. Star Ocean 3 does not have the most vocal fanbase on the board. You wouldn't believe many people have even played the series here, but they actually have. LordOfDabu ran a poll a while ago asking about how many had played Star Ocean and who they were going to vote for and there was a pretty big percentage who had at least played a couple of them. The other reason I'm led to believe it has a more quiet fanbase is that it ranked, like, 15th on the most recent "Board 8 Top 100 Games" or whatever. Even ignoring all of that, the fact that it was not popular on the board does not speak of its strength. Board 8 is the last place you want to look for that type of thing. --- "Building the future and keeping the past alive are one in the same thing." -- Solid Snake |

...what? That probably came out to say that Suikoden maybe beats Pokemon, which is likely not the case at all. Suikoden wouldn't have trouble breaking 40% on Pokemon though. It's nearly doing 30% on Mega Man X, which would kill Pokemon. --- "Building the future and keeping the past alive are one in the same thing." -- Solid Snake |

many of those 9 million G/S/C are from kids who started gaming after

When you're talking a site where a game that sells less than half a
million can do alright, I don't really think the difference between 11
million and 9 million matter too much anymore. Might as well compare
100 million to 102 million. --- ertyu and VeghEsther are truly proof that there is much about this world we still do not understand. |
Tatsumaki Senpuu | Posted 7/3/2006 4:27:18 PM | message detail |
And I'm missing why on earth that even matters. If you love R/B/Y, you're right on board to buy G/S/C. You're a fan of Pokemon, and you're going to buy the next installment. If you hated R/B/Y, you're not going to be buying G/S/C because it is essentially the same game with new Pokemon and, what, breeding? Unless I'm just not thinking of something obvious, I have no clue on why it matters how many new people bought G/S/C. If they skipped R/B/Y, then they're likely not going to be the ones contributing to this, supposedly, high potential of strength over its successor. --- "Building the future and keeping the past alive are one in the same thing." -- Solid Snake |

million can do alright, I don't really think the difference between 11
million and 9 million matter too much anymore. Might as well compare
100 million to 102 million. That's what I think, too. You eventually reach a point where comparing sales is just ... meaningless. Once you're a multi-million seller, I think you've reached more than enough of this site to make it not matter anymore, especially in relation to the contests and this site like you mentioned. I think, more than any other case, sales of the less popular games make more of a difference. In this instance, throwing out the 630,000 figure for Star Ocean 3. Comparing to RPGs without a big name backing (Mario, Final Fantasy, etc.) it does exceptionally well. Hell, it is quite comparable to Paper Mario and Metroid Prime 2. I believe it's also now prudent to say that in most matches, and ESPECIALLY in Pokemon matches, sales mean jack. The amount of people that have played Xenogears as compared to Star Ocean is absolutely irrelevant, and everyone knows it. 99.9% of the traditional default votes in Pokemon/Xenogears went to Pokemon. Something else had to be at play there, and we all know what it was. |

Just as a quick note: Xenogears did even better against Pokémon the
second time around, when there were no casuals to vote. I believe it
also lost the day vote to Xenogears as well (and IIRC, so did Pikachu
to Fox). Conclusion: The casuals are the ones who'd sooner be caught dead than vote for Pokémon.
