Wow, that's a large number of people who are NES gamers. *Does research* http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1514 Holy ****! I had no idea NES ownership was that high on this site. Who says there isn't a large old school fanbase? We're talking about 75% in a poll that totalled over 75,000 votes. That's about as high as you get in a non-contest poll. --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |
LeonhartForever | Posted 6/27/2006 11:17:07 AM | message detail |
And you're talking about 5% who have never played one, period. As I
mentioned before, this site isn't a young as we like to think. There
are still plenty of "old school" gamers out there. Mario 3 didn't get
to be a top 5 game because of the GBA port, ya know. --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |
therealmnm | Posted 6/27/2006 11:29:36 AM | message detail |
Yeah, of course I know about Mario 3. But I'm talking people saying
things like people don't care about the old school Castlevanias and

Well, I wouldn't say that people "don't care," but it's still a niche
series, for the most part. That's really the issue with Castlevania. --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |

You submit your bracket after lockdown in a topic dedicated to it. The
winner of the contest chooses one character for everyone to nominate
for the Character Contest, and all involved who lost have to dedicate a
portion of their sig to praising the winner. Pretty simple. --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |

niche series, for the most part. That's really the issue with
Castlevania. Well, let me reword that. People have been talking like Castlevania fans don't care about the NES games, and that it's only SotN they care about. --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |

Message From Ultima_X at 2006-06-27 03:43:01 So with the new contest slated to start on Saturday (I'd push it to Monday to avoid starting it on a weekend like you did once before, but that's beside the point), I have two related suggestions. One, I stand by the opinion that the poll start/end time should go back to 1 a.m. EST. It would make it _so_ much better for us East Coast people to follow the best part of every poll, plus it's not like this hasn't been in place before. As for the "It's just a poll, go to bed" defense, uh.... that's irrelevant <_< On a more serious note, I just tested the ol' multi-vote poll glitch with one alt. Can that glitch truly not be fixed without turning every poll into what originally happened with Pokemon/Xenogears? It just makes it too easy for people to cheat, even if everyone knows about it and an alleged balance exists when everyone is doing it. Balance or not, polls have been close enough for the glitch to matter. People just start whoring for whatever they have in their bracket, and Board 8 consensus opinion winds up mattering more than everything else. With that said, if I absolutely had to pick one of these to be worked on before Saturday, I'd definitely choose the former. 3 a.m. is just hell over here. Two hours backwards. People would like it and/or get used to it quickly, I promose =p Anyway, good luck and have fun running another one of those things. Hopefully nothing happens that will make you regret doing it. Message From GameFAQs at 2006-06-27 19:33:50 Looking into it, and I wouldn't worry about the vote stuffing. ~*ST*~ --- Winner of the Spring 2004 "Best. Game. Ever." Just got Cloud back. Naturally, it's mass-sidequesting time. Lots of
stuff to nab at the Gold Saucer, and I can get the bird sex out of the
way now as well. Just saw the family tree of the 00ber-gold chocobo,
and like the FAQ says, if your family tree looks like that then you
obviously live in West Virginia. Which reminds me, at which point would Earth Rave be preferable over Cosmo Memory? I'm doing about 1500 damage per attack with Red XIII, so that's an insta-9999 to everything with Cosmo Memory, but according to the formula I'd do something in the 14000s total every time with Earth Rave. 14000 to a single target is appealing for boss fights, but when there's multiple targets Cosmo Memory gets much better (then again, it's virtually overkill for most random battles). --- Everything is "Ridiculous! And BTW, Leonhart, turns out you were absolutely right. Right now I'm not exactly enamored with Sephiroth. Welcome to the club. There's a seat over there for you in the back somewhere. I've said before, I think Sephiroth would have been awesome if he had maintained his same personality from before the Neibelheim incident. He actually talked, displayed emotion, etc. He spends too much of Final Fantasy trying to look badass, shaking his shoulders, and raising his arms up slowly talking random junk. I'm sorry HM, but his "purpose" was just garbage to me. <_< The thing about FFVII is that it spends so much of the game talking up Sephiroth, having the parties fear/obsession of him carry on through the game, and it all makes him seem bigger than what he really is. I remember specifically Cloud saying "No! Not Sephiroth!" when they were on the Shinra boat. I was like, "GET OVER IT ALREADY!" Sephiroth is fearsome. I get the point. I don't need it driven home like 100 times during the game... Okay. I'm ranting.... --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |

Since I'm bored, I'm going to point out something that I just saw:
LoZ:WW has something very weird about it...despite arguably being the
most anti-voted LoZ game, LoZ:WW was #9 in the Game Contest. Yet,
despite being perfect for avoiding anti-votes, the Top 100 List has
LoZ:WW at #45 on the list. Obviously, the list (and Game Contest) has
its faults, but this strikes me especially weird. Between it being
behind Starcraft, there being multiple LoZ games on the list, 1 1/2
years between the Top 100 List and the Game Contest...all that, and it
still surprises me. I know, I know...it's the Top 100 List, enough said. I just don't think I've ever seen it mentioned and that's somewhat-startling to see that kind of a change. --- Miss my Four-Pack Of Fun? Go here: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/gentopic.php?board=585007 |

I just don't think I've ever seen it mentioned and that's somewhat-startling to see that kind of a change. WW had a lot of strength because most voters considered it a pretty
darn good game. It just wasn't a super great game that would make most
people's Top 10 list. On the other hand, games that are hit-or-miss are
more likely to do better in the Top 100 than in a contest setting since
many people would consider them one of their favorites but the number
of people favoring them over other games just isn't as large. --- For the sake of simplicity, I'm going to refer to Gordon Freeman versus Tanner as Schrodinger's Match. -Phoenix Flattener |
therealmnm | Posted 6/27/2006 11:35:10 PM | message detail |
Aprosenf nailed it. The number one reason why the list can't be held as
totally credible. There are plenty of games that are hugely popular,
but not the type to make someone's Top Ten list. Games like that suffer
in that list format. Take Super Mario Kart's #61 position. We should
pretty much know that the game is much stronger than that. It's just
not a Top 10 type of game. There are plenty of other examples of that
on the list. --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |
