Granted, I haven't played a great deal of NSMB, but I wasn't very
impressed. It definitely doesn't measure up to the classic 2-D
platforming standard the series has set. Maybe that'll change once I
get around to actually purchasing the game and having a chance to get
it some play time. --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |

Nah, it is underwhelming. I'm just saying I'd take it now
because it just came out, and a lot of people have convinced themselves
it's amazing simply because they're craving a new 2D Mario experience.
By next year, KH2 would dispatch it with a high level of ease. As for yoblazer's handheld comment... I disagree. --- "An intellectual is a man who takes more words than necessary to tell more than he knows." |

I thought NSMB poll numbers were rather disappointing...but I thought
the same thing about KHII. Dunno which I'd pick in a match. --- Mustache...and green... http://www.rit.edu/~zmb0386/NintendoDesktop2.jpg |
LeonhartForever | Posted 6/25/2006 10:05:55 PM | message detail |
I can't see KHII being much weaker than the original KH, if at all. I can't see NSMB ranking THAT high, that's for sure. --- SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden |
yoblazer33 | Posted 6/25/2006 10:06:20 PM | message detail |
As for yoblazer's handheld comment... I disagree. The only impressive moment I can remember is Mario Kart DS's great performance in the BEST OF 2005 polls. Ironically, that's one of the main pieces of evidence that shaped my MK>MM pick. Other than that... I can't really recall much. --- Board 8: Where Wii treat each other right. The match is interesting for a couple other reasons as well. Glancing
over the GameFAQs reviews for both games, they seem to be about the
same, and their GameRankings reviews are also nearly equal. Mario games
tend to have incredible longevity sales-wise as well, so NSMB should
only do better on KH2 as more time passes. I think I'd take KH2 if the
match happened this year, but in 2k7 and beyond there'd be some doubt. --- Pity for the guilty is treason to the innocent. |

I don't really think NSMB is as amazing as SMB3 or SMW, but it was
still a damn good game, and for somebody playing their first Mario, it
might be as good for them as SMB3 or SMW was for us. --- Don't quote me. - Blulum øütßá©k |

Could it measure up to KH2 in a contest? I'd take KHII over NSMB and not worry about it at all. --- "Cloud, who walked away from the life of a hero to live in solitude, must step forward yet again ..." |

Well that's not surprising English major!!! I'm on the other side of the spectrum... You should do a write-up in binary. =P As for hand-held games' pull around here, sure, it's got some...just don't over-estimate it. Tetris, Pokemon G/S/C, and Fire Emblem all came off as under-whelming stat-wise (I know there's theories and reasons for some, apply them as you may), with only FFTA coming out alright, and here's how all the hand-held games faired in the Top 100 List: #28 - Pokemon Red #34 - Tetris #54 - Fire Emblem #55 - Advance Wars #59 - Pokemon Gold #89 - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance Snubbed - Metroid Fusion It's rather unimpressive, given that there were only seven handheld titles on the list (not counting ports of games like LoZ:LttP), though it does suck that there weren't more handheld games on the list (more LoZ's, Metroid's, Mario's, Golden Sun's, Castlevania's...what have you); it's just that we see several of its top reps and they aren't that high. From there, handheld-ownership just doesn't compare to console-ownership on GameFAQs, and MKDS has easily had the best showing in an overall-GotY poll yet. It doesn't help that consoles have been around longer, receive the biggest games, and get the most attention, either... ...I don't think anybody's arguing they're more important here than consoles, but I don't think people should fool themselves into thinking they're nearly as strong as consoles here as far as pull. Unless it's a port from a popular classic (LoZ:LttP) or is part of a well-received series (FFTA)...or Tetris...I wouldn't take a handheld game over most console games. --- Miss my Four-Pack Of Fun? I wonder what other poll he will do. Assuming he's going to have the
same one for Super Mario Bros. and I guess Metal Gear (since it's a
1-seed), and also assuming that Friday's poll will be asking if we have
our brackets in yet, I wonder what Thursday's poll will be? Will he ask
about one more series (Sonic? Mega Man?) or will it be some other
contest related question? --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |

I just realized I'm competing against HM and Leon in the Analysis Crew. Man, my write-ups are going to look absolutely pitiful! You know... just yesterday, I said the same thing. I also wonder how many points each game got. Sure, the top entries probably got a number of points, but there has
to be a dropoff at some point. Like for instance, I wonder how much my
having Xenogears at #1 played in getting it at #32? Would it drop if I
hadn't listed it at all? And if so, how far? --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |

Seriously, so I try to acknowledge the Top 100 List...forgive me. The problem I personally have with it is that you reference the Top 100 list at almost ever single turn. I still don't understand why you think it holds enough validity to be looked at so much. I'm not trying to say "Hey, Harrich, stop," but it is a little much. MP:H is too deviating from the MP series, more than you might think. The feel is complteley off. While the touch pad thing is quite nice for accuracy, the lack of lock on makes WIGS ANGRY! WIGS SMASH! If Nintendo gave this game normal MP controls, (or included lock on with the stylus some how), it'd make my Top 50. As of now, it's close, but not quite (granted, I haven't finsihed yet.) I also preferred MP's style of HUUUGE levels you can go back and revisit like 10 times and discover new things each time. Not multiple tiny levels that you can revisit MAYBE NOT EVEN ONCE (twice if you're lucky). That all said, it IS an enjoyable game, wrist pains aside. --- "their is no sailor ertyu" ~The Man Who Will Save B8, ertyu Happily married to Alanna82 on V-Day 2005 |

I've got to wonder how low the last two options will be for a Super
Mario Brothers poll would be. Are there REALLY video gamers out there
who have NEVER played a Mario game? On the subject of the top 100 list, I don't think there really was a
huge front page turnout for it. I was looking at it last night when I
was doing my FE/SH writeup (I'm skipping around, honest!) and I was
thinking about it. No fewer than 6/15 of the winners are Board 8ers.
That's a much higher proportion than most contests, isn't it? I'd also say that Tales of Symphonia, at the time one of this Board's favorite games getting #81 as a write-in suggests that too. --- Raiden is still [!!] nominations short! http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs9/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=27664244 |
