The N64 was great for it's time, but most of its best games are horribly
outdated. The jump to 3D was pretty crude in retrospect. All of my
favorite N64 games are pretty lacking everytime I play them. The only
N64 games I have that stand out for me today still are Star Fox 64,
Blast Corps, and Conker's Bad Fur Day (love the multi-player). Super
Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie are there, but there are so many platformers
today (Jak, R&C, Sonic Adventure, etc.) that add so much more to
what those games bring. As for the rest of the "hits" on the N64... Goldeneye was great, but it's laggy and outdated compared to any of the FPSs of today. Shadows of the Empire was good, but kinda lacking today. The wrestling games were great, but the AKI engine just moves too slow in those games compared to what it does today (play the Def Jam games, same engine). The N64 just doesn't measure up to me anymore. I can easily go back to the NES, SNES, PSX, Genesis, etc. and have just as much fun with those games as I did back then. It just isn't the same for the N64. --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |

Oh, and Mario Kart 64 became outdated the minute I started playing Mario Kart DS. --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |

Forgot to mention the Zelda games as well. I guess Oot
and MM still hold up today, but that's because WW wasn't the
blockbuster hit that everybody wanted it to be (it was for me). I have
a feeling once Twilight Princess drops, people won't hold OoT in quite
as much esteem as it is held now. --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |

I would think the N64 does just fine for itself in a contest. I had a
lot more fun with that than the gamecube; however ssbm alone makes up a
lot of the difference. There's a lot of people in my family so we had
immense fun with mario golf, tennis, parties, super smash brothers,
chameleon twist, and I always watched my older sister play super mario
64, ocarina, star fox. The system had a lot to offer, and from playing
super smash last week at a party, I would say they're still enjoyable
today. --- Revenge is a dish best served cold. ~ Old Klingon Proverb |

I don't know what to think about the PSX/N64 generation. On one hand, a
lot of my favorites come from that gen - SotN, OoT, Valkyrie Profile,
and SM64 are all in my top 10, and the 2 Lunars, Suik II, and ToE
aren't far behind - but I always seem to remember that as the
generation when 3D wasn't quite right yet. I mean, look at that list -
all but 2 are sprite based games. Yay rambling! --- Mustache...and green... http://www.rit.edu/~zmb0386/NintendoDesktop2.jpg |

The 32/64-bit gen hasn't aged very well in general. There are
definitely still some standouts--MGS, Ocarina of Time, SM64, the
Pokemon games--but do I think FFVII is nearly as good nowadays as it
was back in 1997? Of course not. The competition in the RPG arena has
risen tenfold since then, while games like OoT and MGS still remain
relatively uncontested by newer games. And SM64 is the only truly great
3D platformer (you know it's true.) --- "Thank you, Mario. But our princess is in another castle." -Toad in Super Mario Bros. |

I do agree that OoT will lose its legendary status somewhat when
Twilight Princess arrives. Assuming TP lives up to the hype, that is,
which will be an extremely difficult feat. --- "Thank you, Mario. But our princess is in another castle." -Toad in Super Mario Bros. |

To be honest, I didn't love SM64. I thought the beginning levels were
awesome, but as soon as I hit that water level that you could change
the height of the water by jumping into the top half of the picture,
the game went downhill. --- "An intellectual is a man who takes more words than necessary to tell more than he knows." |

Every great game has a couple of lame parts. Ocarina of Time has Jabu
Jabu's Belly. Metroid Prime has the key collecting near the end.
Goldeneye has the Control Room. Chrono Trigger has the prison ship (I
forget its name.) Super Smash Bros. Melee has Adventure mode (which is
lazily designed outside of the first level.) Etc., etc. The cool area of SM64 like Big Boo's Haunt more than make up for dumb parts like Wet-Dry World. --- "Thank you, Mario. But our princess is in another castle." -Toad in Super Mario Bros. |

The first half of Super Mario 64 are so superb that it still manages to
be in my top 30ish games. But the second half is really very lackluster. And I don't remember having a single level in Goldeneye I disliked. Except for the second Severnaya, but that was because I didn't know how to turn the brightness up on my TV. Banjo Kazooie went up against Ocarina of Time yesterday in the NCAA thing... and I voted for Ocarina of Time! I felt bad about it, really, I did. I'd also say Goldeneye is a shining example of a game that hasn't aged well. I tried to play it a couple of months ago. It was practically painful. I'm not usually the one to say that kind of stuff, I mean I'll still play NES and SNES games, and often. I have a feeling I'm going to be upstaged with these writeups. I mean, I'm not saying they're short, but to compete with the thousand word writeup producing zealots? None even close to that yet. Metal Gear/Soul Calibur gave me a big mental block... I felt like I should write more about it than the typical 1v8 match, but I still didn't think Soul Calibur had any realistic chance of winning. What was I to do? I just skipped it for a while and went back to it. Rambling on here. Let's just say look forward to Devil May Cry v Sonic, that'll be my time to shine! --- Raiden is still [!!] nominations short! I'd also say Goldeneye is a shining example of a game that hasn't
aged well. I tried to play it a couple of months ago. It was
practically painful. I'm not sure why, but I found Goldeneye to be just as enjoyable when I played it a few months ago. I would have THOUGHT it wouldn't age well, yet it was still extremely fun. --- "An intellectual is a man who takes more words than necessary to tell more than he knows." |

Not that many, but alot of lurkers. So true. I've been reading every post since I got my new laptop, but I just haven't felt the urge to post that much. And Banjo-Kazooie kicked major amounts of ass. The engine room of Rusty Bucket Bay may be a *****, but the rest of the game more than makes up for it. I don't know why people hate the engine room in Rusty Bucket Bay so
much. Maybe because it's difficult compared to the standard relative
ease of the rest of the game. It's nothing that's particularly more
difficult or annoying than in any other platformer. Getting 100 coins
in Rainbow Ride was 100 times more frustrating than Rusty Bucket Bay. --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |
