For the first round, I've mostly been dealing with contest and poll history, seeing how competitive each series has been in the past. I've only vaguely referenced polls. I haven't cited them, really.

Except in the case of Super Mario Brothers/Madden. I just decided to have fun with that one.

On GameFAQs? Are you crazy? The PS2 would wipe the floor with the GameCube.

So then how come the difference is so slim in all of those "Got ?" polls? In the general public, GCN would of course stand no chance, but here the GCN is stronger than it should be.

So then how come the difference is so slim in all of those "Got ?" polls?

Since when? I was under the impression that the PS2 was easily the most widely owned console.

And overall ownership hardly means anything (more people have played OoT than FFVII. More people have played LttP than Chrono Trigger). The Playstation 2 ALWAYS wins the System of the Year, even when it doesn't have any noteworthy releases.

As I said, I'd take the SNES to win the whole thing, but I still say PS2 wipes the floor with the GameCube. It's got two of the least favored Mario and Zelda games and not much greatness to offer in way of exclusive material.

Even without backwards compatibility?

The PS2 library alone murders the GCN in every way imaginable, and most other gaming libraries too.

Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean, Dragon Quest, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Mega Man, God of War, etc.

It pretty much has everything you could want on there. Free online, too, which rocks for things like Fight Night and Madden. Most of my favorite games come from the PS2.

Here's what the PS2 did for me:

Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2
Jak series
Street Fighter Alpha Anthology

That's it. Sure there are plenty of other games that I liked on the PS2, but they weren't must haves for me (DMC, SotC), or they were games I could get on other systems (GTA, MvC2, MMAC, MMXC). I'm not saying I don't like the PS2, but it has easily been my least favorite console I've owned. I do like every console I've had, by the way.

I would easily vote for the Gamecube over the PS2. I loved the hell out of Wind Waker, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Metroid Prime. Those alone are worth more to me than my entire PS2 library.

If this means you haven't played the Ratchet & Clank games, you need to do so now. If you didn't like them, you're dead to me.

Oops. I forgot to add MGS3 (check the sig). I haven't bothered to play the R&C series, although I've been meaning to for a while. I think they are all 10 bucks now (UYA might still be 19.99). But I have FFX. It was the first game I bought on the PS2. I wasn't impressed at all. I thought you knew that already?

I'm sorry. FFX was just flat out boring to me. The characters were okay, but I didn't really get attached to any of them. The voice acting was pretty good. The story was okay. The sphere grid was nice. But I just didn't have much fun actually playing through the game.

Blame a battle system which pretty much plans all of your random battles for you for the first half of the game. It was basically "Hmmm, a fast enemy? Better use Tidus! A hard-shelled enemy? Better use Auron! An elemental? Lulu! A flying enemy? Wakka! Wait, what about Yuna? Do I really feel like summoning just so she can contribute to the battle? Meh. And poor Kimahri. Let me build him up so he can be useful to me."

Then there's also Blitzball, lightning dogding, the temples, and all the other side quests that I had little fun with. The only thing I actually really liked about the game was the end.

Lightning dodging really wasn't that bad...Butterfly catching, on the other hand...Blitzball seems to be a bit hit or miss. Once you get good at it and you don't let the computer control your characters for you (because the AI is so incredibly stupid), I think it's a lot of fun. The temples can be frustrating, but every game has things like that.

The story, characters, and things like that are purely subjective, but I was endeared to Tidus, Auron, and Yuna from the beginning. Wakka was rather cool, too. Some people complain about cutscenes being too long, but I didn't find it that bad.

I liked the battle system and the Sphere Grid. I thought it was a nice change of pace and handy to be able to change out party members on the fly (and you didn't HAVE to use anybody if you didn't want to, except on rare occasions). It had some of the best boss fights in the series, I thought, with Seymour Flux and Yunalesca. I think the game really picks up when you get to Mount Gagazet. It's simply amazing from that point on.

Oh, I definitely know why people like it. I can subjectively say it was a great game. It just didn't do it for me. I did like the boss fights, which I forgot to mention. But the random encounters, sidequests, and general flow of the game just killed it for me.

FFX's battle system was, by far, the best in the series. It was fast, one animation started before another was over, the ability to switch equipment in battle was fantastic, being able to see the order in which the attacks happened was good, and nothing beats the fact that agility actually meant something here.

The Sphere Grid, while somewhat restricting, did allow you a bunch of different paths to build up characters how you wanted to. Far better than the standard way of gaining EXP and receiving stat boosts that way. Nothing is more satisfying than having an Auron that beats everyone in speed and nails about 30,000 damage on an enemy with a high defense rating against physicals.

And I still want them to, like, make Blitzball Online or something for the PS3. Fix it up so that it works as a fully fledged game and what not, and you have a winner on your hands. >>

I also wasn't much of a fan of what the PS2 had to offer. Great PS2 exclusives include Katamari Damacy and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter...and that's it. There are a few great multiconsole games (Beyond Good and Evil, MMXC, Killer 7, MGS2), but a lot of the exclusives turned out to be massive disappointments, like KH, FFX, SO3, and MGS3. mnm pretty much summed up my opinion of FFX, except I didn't even think the end was all that great (although that might've had something to do with playing it directly after MGS3 :p).

The GCN was also a disappointment in some ways, but it had a few games that were absolutely phenomenal, like SSBM, F-Zero GX, and Wind Waker. In my personal opinion, PS1 > N64 > GCN > PS2, although I suspect I'm probably an exception there. N64 vs. GCN might be an interesting match here, or maybe even N64 vs. PS2.

HM, what did you think of FFX-2's battle system? It was even faster than FFX's. I actually liked it quite a lot more than FFX's, partially because I didn't like how slow FFX's felt. Being able to wait as long as you wanted to plan kinda takes the excitement out of a battle.

And how am I giving the N64 too much credit? OoT, Goldeneye, and Super Mario 64 are all up there with the best the PS2 has to offer on GameFAQs.

Because you named three games. THREE. You could include Mario Kart 64, and then you have four. Not much else from that console would be popular here. This is an entire library we're talking about, not just a few strong games.

Plus, people seem to be taking this idea of "NintendoFAQs" way too far here. Thinking that anything Nintendo outside of the SNES now stands a chance against the likes of the PSX or PS2 is crazy. Honestly, the game of the year was RE4 by a WIDE margin, and that was when it was still GameCube exclusive. Guess what console still won system of the year despite not even having that good of a year?

Oh right, Playstation 2.
