Hey, DKC2 is my favorite game, so you can't accuse me of being biased here. I just have difficulty imagining the DKC series being anything spectacular.

You're missing out! I think the second one rivals the best of the Mario series in terms of platforming goodness, and the first and third aren't too shabby either. Plus they have easily the best pre-64-bit video game soundtracks I've ever heard, specifically, again, the second.

Well, in comparison with those, yeah. But the freaking Tony Hawk series could beat Harvest Moon and I still wouldn't say it's "strong." Beating fodder doesn't necesarily equate with strength; I wouldn't expect DKC to beat Pokemon and I imagine Kirby would give it a good run.

We're not talking about what series will be really strong, but considering what did get in this bracket, I certainly say that Donkey Kong got snubbed.

I think Half-Life is easily the biggest snub outside of (and possibly even including) Chrono. I don't see DKC doing anything spectacular here.

Why would HL be that strong? Why would it be stronger than Warcraft, Diablo, or even Civilization? The PC fanbase here is very small, and only ranking ahead of KotOR by 1.5% is hardly inspirational.

I certainly think DKC would be quite strong. Xeno would also be a great snub, and Chrono could certainly tear up the bracket if it were in the right place. In Sonic and SSB's half-division, for example.

Above KotOR is still above half the games in the games tournament including Street Fighter... plus it has HL2 now. It wouldn't be a beast but it would be decent.

Call it a hunch. I know games don't equal characters, but I think Gordon actually became a reasonably strong character last year - or at least as close as Gordon Freeman can get to that - and I think Half-Life 2 brought an increased visibility to the series. I could see Half-Life being a solid midcarder. Diablo and Warcraft would probably be stronger, but Half-Life could certainly beat Civilization.

It's obvious that HL2 made it fairly strong, but you said stronger than Chrono, and that's just ridiculous. I'd probably think twice in a match like HL vs. Street Fighter, and I'd likely end up actually taking HL.

I'd still take DK over HL though, especially after the character's performance last summer.

I've come to the conclusion that your life sucks. I suggest scouring everywhere until you find DKC1, DKC2 and DKC3 for the original SNES, and play them in order. Not that the order actually matters, but after playing DKC2 or 3 you probably won't appreciate the original all that much. Anyway, everyone hates on 3 and has a hardon for 2. But 3 is definitely better!

I just bought Street Fighter Alpha Anthology like 15 mins ago. I've never even played any of the Alpha games. Actually, Street Fighter II is pretty much the only Street Fighter game I've played! Unless you count the EX games, I have all 3 of those... It's not the same though. I got accustomed to Akuma, Sakura, and the rest of the non-SFII cast through the EX and Vs. games.

Diablo and Warcraft would probably be stronger, but Half-Life could certainly beat Civilization.

It would beat Warcraft, too, barring rallying, and here's my logic for it. First, of course, is the Top 100 List:

#25 - Half-Life 2
#31 - Half-Life
#39 - World of Warcraft
#49 - Half-Life: Counter-Strike
#60 - Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos

From there, let's look at GotY polls:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1134
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1877

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1871

In the first two, they are both GotY-Final polls...and I think HL2 had a more impressive performance in it against tougher competition than W3 did (and notice in HL2's poll that three of the four games are FPS's...er, FPA for MP2). Then, in the second poll, it shows that it beat WoW with plenty of room to spare in the GotY-PC poll for 2004 (16.85%). HL2 has also been ported to the Xbox since last year (in November, which means it could help Gordon out this year...maybe), whereas WoW isn't multi-console.

HL > WC

Chrono, Half-Life, and DKC got snubbed. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Jak & Daxter, and Ratchet & Clank didn't really deserve to make it, but I could see J&D or R&C at about the level of some of the weakest entries that did make it. Star Fox could have done well. F-Zero would have been weak. Katamari Damacy might have made an impact. Mega Man Zero or Mega Man Battle Network could've done well, too.

If you put any stock in the match with MGS and believe that Metal Gear could be a powerhouse, I'd have to go with FF Tactics.

Some people working at Google, huh? If I didn't have my answer as to the GTA:VC spike on Lycos not carrying over elsewhere, at least I'd know where to ask. ;)

FACT OR FICTION: SMB3 would beat the SSB series on its lonesome.

I think I'm going to go with fact, there. As has been said previously, SSB's power as a series will mostly stem from SSBM plus a couple few other people. I don't think that couple few other people can make up the gap between the two (that and there would indubitably be SFF to some degree). Throw in other popular titles like SMW and SM64 (and that can only be a good thing in the context of a series contest, as no one agrees which is the better game of the three), and you've got a dangerous situation on your hands.

As I said earlier today, the only way the match can be anywhere near close is if it involves Sonic.

SMB3 > the SSB series? I'm going with fiction since I'd still take SSBM > SMB3 in a heated battle...yet, there's no way the SSB series avoids SFF against the SMB series.

I wouldn't expect DKC to beat Pokemon and I imagine Kirby would give it a good run.

Pokemon got whipped by Xenogears and has a good chance of losing to Star Ocean. DKC would certainly beat both of those games with ease.

Put Pokemon RBY against Xenogears, I'm not convinced you get the same result. Also I think Pokemon hate has gone down. Even if you assume SO = Xenogears, (and I don't think SO is as popular here as Xenogears is) then the match still isn't clear.

I have no doubt that Xenogears still beats Pokemon R/B/Y without any trouble at all. It isn't turning that difference around nor making a match of it. And any Pokemon hate that did die down certainly does mean Pokemon gets any votes in the process, as there has been absolutely nothing for people who hated two years ago to like it now. I don't even know why people would think ones mind would change based on virtually nothing in two years anyway.

I really don't think R/B/Y would have done any better, all Pokemon games are virtually the same (with the exception of Colliseum and Snap, but lets ignore those, because one was a monstrosity of a game, and one lasted 15 minutes). Whether there's more R/B/Y fans or G/S/C fans, I don't care arguing is worthless over it, but just to give you my belief, if R/B was more popular than G/S, it's not as if G/S came out right before the contest. Regardless, if you're a fan of one, you're going to be a fan of the other. You may prefer one over the other due to small differences, and you're gonna be hard pressed to find someone who loves one, and hates the other. So yeah, I think R/B/Y would have performed almost identically to G/S/C against Xenogears, which just helps reaffirm SO in my mind.

Regardless, if you're a fan of one, you're going to be a fan of the other.

Ummm... no. Not necessarily. You're assuming that fans of the first one went on to play the rest of them. R/B/Y is undoubtedly the most popular of the bunch. Those are the games that have all of the original Pokemon that people have come to love. I don't think it's anecdotal when I say that I would vote R/B/Y over plenty of things, but probably wouldn't vote for G/S/C at all... I don't think I'm the only person here who played the originals and then lost interest in the series. Not that I didn't like R/B/Y. I just felt I outgrew it. Actually the only reason I even played R/B/Y was because I had a 6 year old brother when it was released. Hell, what was I, 16 at the time?

I would agree if you say that fans of the later ones are probably fans of R/B/Y, but that doesn't necessarily work in reverse. I think R/B/Y would have been stronger by a bit.
