This is about as off-topic as it gets, but meh.

I'm in a computer room on campus, and I'm about to take the required CPE (Computer Proficiency Exam) test. Apparently, the test will cover Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access. I know the first three pretty well, but I have no idea what the hell this "Access" even is.

Doubt anyone will mind if I have Internet Explorer open, so feel free to bestow your Access knowledge upon me. Thanks.

Oh, and how about those video games?

Don't know how much this will help but Access is for creating and altering Databases. If you don't know what a Database is then I think you're screwed for that part of the test :(

I consider Oblivion the winner of the poll, but it still stands that KH2 is the GotY thus far. It's also still the last huge hit to be released, too...and I assume its over-lap with KH and KH:CoM is much smaller than Halo 2's over-lap with Halo. Now, whether Halo 2 did more for the Halo series than KH did for the KH series, it's debatable, but I'm going with KH.

But...Halo 2 sold better than Halo and KH2 sold worse than KH. KH2 may have made KH fans like the series more, but Halo 2 actually created new fans.

But you used their matchups against Starcraft as an example of why Halo should be the favorite. And going solely by that, the difference really isn't that big in 2k4. I'm just stating the facts. It's not an indication of what's going to happen now. Halo did have a huge rally back then, and that's the main reason why it did better against Starcraft. And after the fact, the difference isn't that big.

As I understood it, the games contest matches looked better for Halo than KH. IIRC, there was a lot more Starcraft rallying against Halo than against KH, because a victory for Starcraft against KH was never really in doubt.

Sequels are always more frontloaded than the original. Nobody here would take FFVIII over FFVII, I hope?

Yes, it created new fans by selling more, but we're looking at the Xbox and GameFAQs here...there's going to be a huge over-lap of Halo and Halo 2 owners/players anyway, and GameFAQs visitors have Xbox owners as a small group anyways (in comparison to PS2 owners and GC owners). Now, it may have made previous fans of the series BIGGER fans, but I don't think it actually did much for expanding the fanbase, and the series dedication was already plenty strong from what we've seen and assumed.

i would have to agree with HaRRicH on that one. it seems to me that KH2 and KH: CoM both created more new fans of the series than Halo 2 did for it's series. for proof of that, look at how many copies of KH1 and KH:CofM were sold last month. the original KH made it into the freaking Top 10 best selling games of the month. how many copies of Halo 1 were sold after Halo 2 came out? not that many.

Yeah, now that the poll is back in its proper place and everything.

Bold prediction: The Fire Emblem/Silent Hill match pic will really, really suck. Look at it this way: compare it to Vergil/Ghaleon. Same bracket placement, two entrants few people even care about, an obvious winner, many people going with the underdog for whatever reason... yep.

You're comparing Silent Hill to Ghaleon? Even if Silent Hill does lose, it's not going to be that bad.

Actually, I suppose my feelings on that match are more close to "You're comparing Fire Emblem to Vergil"?

I actually liked that match pic. Ghaleon looked funny, and Vergil looked decent.

I picked above average, the number of people saying they could be pros is hilarious though.

Also, I find it hilarious how people want to completely disregard Halo 2 outselling Halo as a larger factor for an increase in fanbase than KHII having a better story and battle system, which is complete opinion, and based on nothing but anecdotal evidence. I'm not saying it's not here either, I just think it's funny how people are choosing to completely ignore Halo's potential boost as compared to KH's, especially when it starts out already stronger than KH.

I don't have time to argue this now either, 'cause I'm late!

Ngamer or Ulti or someone will make a topic after bracket lockdown in which you must post your bracket. Assuming no one would consider Civilization over Legend of Zelda, you'd have until the end of that match (or the next one?) to post your bracket.

Now, comparing vote totals from various years:

June 19-21, 2006 (Polls 2412-2414)

87236 (FFVII Remake; poll at bottom for IE for half the day)
88361 (How often do you play video games?)
88738 (Where do you usually play video games at home?)

June/July 2005, depending on number of bonus polls during SC2K5. (Polls 2047-2049)

56373 (July Releases)
58464 (Are your parents aware of what kinds of games you play?)
62519 (Can Revolution compete with PS3 and Xbox360?)

June 19-21, 2003 (Polls 1293-1295- doesn't match up with date obtained by subtracting 3 years from today's poll because of bonus polls. I just used Link/Aiai as July 1, 2003, and subtracted from there.)

37692 (Do you own a DVR?)
68300 (What time do you wake up?)
53703 (Got Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix?)

Hello SC2K3-esque vote totals!

The strange thing is, the jump from before contest to contest vote totals was much much larger in 2003 than in 2005. I'm going to guess that it was due to the lower poll location in 2005, which led to a sharp reduction in the casual votes from those who would vote in a contest, but not in a normal PotD, while the regulars tend to vote in both. With the poll again in its rightful location this year, 2003 would probably be a better comparison. Let's go for 200,000 votes in FF vs. Zelda!

I wonder when that phrase was first actually created? I saw the words "Elite 9" thrown around.

Well it was first referred to as the Elite 8 in 2k3, as everybody in the Noble Nine made the Elite 8 that year except for Crono due to Mario/Crono being in the Sweet Sixteen. So everybody started saying "The Elite 8 + Crono" for a while. Then they just eventually added Crono to the group since it made sense, and Noble Nine was adopted to stay true to the alliteration.

Chrono by far... I think there are far too many RPG types in the bracket as well. Fire Emblem, Harvest Moon, Star Ocean, Pokemon, Suikoden, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Diablo, Elder Scrolls, Shadow Hearts, and arguably Warcraft (WoW). This bracket definitely needed more variety.

Biggest snubs outside of Chrono?

Donkey Kong (Country)
Half-Life
Pac-Man
Contra
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Tony Hawk Pro Skater
Burnout
Gran Turismo
One of the PS2 Platformers (Jak, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper)

A whole lot more that I'm forgetting about. Not saying these would necessarily be stronger than some of the lesser RPGs, but it at least adds some variety to the bracket. <_<;
