Hmm... this poll is telling us that almost 34% of our voting pool has been gaming for at least 16 years. Does that seem a little high to anyone else?

I'm almost positive that it would be considerably less if the poll wasn't so glitchy on ie. More casuals probably use ie, which means fewer years of gaming.

Maybe I'm wrong though.

Man, someone ought to tell CJayC to narrow the damn banner. Castlevania and Warcraft will be much more threatening if this keeps up.

Seems pretty normal to me. 16 years is about the beginning of the 16-bit era. Seeing how popular games like Chrono Trigger, LttP, and other 16-bit era games are, you would expect a number like that. Plus people are probably answering the first time they started playing games period which would probably be when they were pretty young (3-4 years old).

If I decide to stick with a purely-fun pick, I'll stay with AKI Man...but seeing how there will already be CATS and maybe Jay Solano, I may pick somebody more serious. Fox comes to mind, seeing how he somehow missed out last year and BARELY lost in the Returner Championship for the NRT, as does Yoshimitsu and Akuma.

You were putting it like SSB having one game encompass its popularity makes it vulnerable to Sonic. I don't buy it. Didn't you say yourself that you don't see Sonic as being particularly strong, you just think SSB is overrated because it is basically one game? That's what I disagree with.

No, I said it would win more on SSB's "weakness," if you want to call it that, than Sonic just being that strong. I think SSB is overrated to all get out anyway, but it'll still be a strong series. Just not THAT strong. I still don't particularly agree with what you're trying to say about it doesn't really matter if it's spread out through games or if it's primarily focused in one game. That just doesn't make any sense.

Otherwise, it's likely bias that makes that decision.

Don't worry. SSB has plenty of bias on its own to counteract that.

SC2K6 Nominations: Squall, Roxas, Serge, Seifer, Laguna, The Prince of Persia, Nightmare, Sub-Zero, Captain Falcon, Raiden
LeonhartForever | Posted 6/18/2006 1:41:00 PM | message detail
No Sonic game could possibly break 45% on it and I bet no Sonic game would even break 40% on it.

Hmmm....No individual game is worth 30% on FFVII? Of course, I know you're proposing this "SMW barely SFF'd Sonic 2, if it did at all" idea, so I can imagine why you'd do so. But in reality, SSBM isn't THAT much of a powerhouse that it's that out of reach to Sonic. About 20 games in the Sp2K4 bracket could hit at least 40% on SSBM (and that's NOT counting games that would possibly hit that mark if not for varying degrees of SFF, such as MGS, GE, SotN, Super Mario 64, and perhaps others).

In other words, 40% on SSBM isn't a particularly difficult feat for at least ONE Sonic game to hit, especially when I believe that Sonic 2 is stronger than it looks and it's not even the strongest in the series.

I'm curious: who are all of you planning on having the gurus nominate if you win the Guru Contest? I know Harrich has Aki Man and Leonhart has Seifer (or was it Laguna?), but I'm unsure about most of you.

Actually, that was Heroic Mario. I'm not in the Guru Contest. I don't like losing my sig, and I don't want to be stuck nominating a joke character. If it's a character worth nominating, I might do it even though I'm not in the contest, but otherwise, nah.

Yeah, I think the peak score for any Sonic game would be below 30%. I don't mean to say Sonic 2 didn't under-perform at all, but I find that much more reasonable than some of the levels other people are placing it at -- I simply think it wasn't truly breaking tier after tier like other people, is all, due to the reasoning for "SFF" in the match to be completely blown out of proportion. From there, Sonic 2 and S&K are bound to have a huge over-lap thanks to Sonic 2 being packed with the Genesis and the ability to connect the games, which would be a good reason why S&K got so popular. Then, while I agree with you and others that I prefer S&K to Sonic 2, I don't see it being SO much more prefered, what with the already-huge over-lapping fanbase and half of its appeal was that you could play Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 with Knuckles.

Add to it the recent evidence that SA2B should be a bust compared to what many of us were thinking (I never want to hear again that SA2B would outrank MP) and the ranking of the Sonic games in the favorites-poll (which I've heard you say is generally more accurate than character-favorites polls), and I feel better thinking Sonic 2 would be the #1 or #2 game now...no longer do I think SA2B would threaten its position. To see S&K soar that much further past Sonic 2 would be astounding to me.

I honestly don't know who I'd pick, because I think the Prince will get in regardless of me picking him if I won thanks to the nomination rally/my rally the purged. ;_;

Anyway, if there was another character that I felt could actually do some damage, and had no chance of getting in, I would consider picking them. I still might go with The Prince to boost his seed even more if possible though. Really couldn't say.

I agree about Castlevania being dangerous if this poll position continues. who knows if it's going to be permanent though? I would think the banner would come down when the contest starts, or soon thereafter. if it goes back to normal, we'll be all good.

interesting to think about it though... Warcraft could be a force if the votals are halved.

SSBM got DOUBLED by Final Fantasy X. How could it ever beat it in a head-to-head match?

In other words, I don't take old Game of the Year Polls to be worth too much. Besides, we saw Sonic characters have a notable increase in strength, so it's possible that his games went up as well.

Of course, that applies to any and all Nintendo games, so that's likely a moot point regardless.

Guilty Gear Character would be more interesting than X-Death, I'd imagine. I mean, we know X-Death's gonna be pretty damn weak.

But... but... Sol Badguy or Ky Kiske could outdo Terry or Jin, you never know! Dizzy? TJF for sure, oh yeah!

Though in all honesty Dan's probably the most interesting of my choices. How does a fairly popular Street Fighter character do that has no exposure on the SNES games.

Aside from Akuma (and he kinda cheats with his SF2: T), I'd say Dan's likely to be the most popular SFA original character out there. I honestly think he could at least scrape by the fodder line.

Akuma > Dan > Sakura >> any others I can think of.
