Actually, I take that back. The Guru is MORE open than the BOP because Slow won't accept blatantly bad brackets. You can enter a blatantly bad bracket to the Guru Contest if you want.

Well, to see the sign-ups for the guru contest, you have to click on the stats topic, whereas the BOP is visible on the Board 8 topic list...

Slow's policy is a good thing.

Does trolling make you feel better, inside?

I like how everyone can respond to my posts with respect and valid arguments and one person can't help but quickly dismiss me?

I love this GameFOX feature called Blacklist ;)

Funny, you said the same thing about Ulti last contest, yet continued to respond to his posts anyway. This is the last I'm saying about it, because I'm not flooding the stats topic with an argument about your douchyness.

Final Fantasy

Last release: Final Fantasy XI (2004- PS2 version)

Upcoming releases: Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIII

Yeah.

Hype level: High

Diablo

Last release: Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (2001)

Upcoming releases: None announced

Do people still play Diablo II? I seriously haven't even thought about this series since the spring 2004 contest. No releases in 5 years=no hype to speak of.

Hype level: Low

Mega Man

Last release: Rockman and Forte (1998)

Upcoming releases: None announced

Look at the last release. See that "1998" there? 'Nuff said. This series is operating entirely on name recognition and/or nostalgia.

Hype level: Very low

Mario Kart

Last release: Mario Kart DS (2005)

Upcoming releases: None announced

Mario Kart DS was the biggest DS game of 2005--hell, it sold considerably better back in November than NSMB is selling now. And it's a goddamn spinoff. The popularity of this series is insane. Sure, the hype has died down a bit since then, but without a doubt people still pay a lot of attention to MK.

Hype level: Medium

The Elder Scrolls

Last release: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006)

Upcoming releases: None announced

Oblivion is the biggest game of 2006 so far (aside from KHII.) Sure, it's still a bit niche--on GameFAQs, it's nowhere near as popular as the FF series--but it has still given a big piggyback to the Elder Scrolls series as a whole. Just hope that the average voter will be able to realize that Elder Scrolls=Oblivion's series.

Hype level: High

Street Fighter

Last release: Don't remember

Upcoming releases: None, as far as I know

No one but the most hardcore of fighting game fans has given a flying **** about SF since 1994 or so.

Hype level: Very low

Resident Evil

Last release: Resident Evil 4 (2005)

Upcoming releases: Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil (Wii)

Let's just put it this way: the hype for RE4 is still lingering across the gaming community. It's one of those games like FFVII or OoT that will remain eternally popular. And you can bet your daddy's boots that the whole RE series has been given a boost because of it.

Hype level: High

Shadow Hearts

Last release: Shadow Hearts: From the New World (2006)

Upcoming releases: None announced

Shadow Hearts 3 came and went with virtually no buzz whatsoever. This series is the very definition of cult.

Hype level: Very low

You pretty much deserve dismissal for this argument, though. You've really only been arguing the obvious, as TRE has been pointing out. There is only one "cookie cutter", go figure it's going to have less of a chance of winning than all brackets with one or more upset picks. Your argument is pointless.

THOUSANDS of people still play Diablo 2. People are awaiting Diablo 3 eagerly and WoW would most likely lose thousands of subscribers the second Diablo 3 came out. No release in 5 years does not = no hype. That's like saying people don't want Starcraft 2.
Slowflake | Posted 6/17/2006 4:40:39 PM | message detail
XD. You're way off the mark regarding Diablo.

Now, would the poll position affecting "only" 40% of the site's userbase really make the vote turnouts plummet? Dunno... all kinds of people are still using IE, so I can't tell.

I doubt that very much. Around here, the only game we played circa 1998 was SFA2, and the only games we play during a break from LAN Halo 2 are Pro Evo and the SF Anthology. And none of us are hardcore anything fans.

I doubt all the SF2 lost? people were either hardcore fighter fans or trolls.

I just opened up gamefaqs on ie to see what the big deal was, and holy crap is the potd hard to find. It took me two looks over the main page to find it, and I was actively looking for it. Almost no ramdom passer by will be voting in any polls if they use ie. Then again it'l probable be fixed before then.

Just take a look at how few votes todays poll has.

There is nothing "mediocre" about Star Ocean, as it is easily one of the best series in this contest.

Sonic > SSB just seems...right. Sort of like Mario > Samus from last year.
MnMZero | Posted 6/17/2006 6:20:04 PM | message detail
I just don't think Sonic is held high enough as a gaming series around here to beat SSB in popularity. I don't know why you keep hammering in that SSB is overrated. Sure, it's not invincible, but it's still proven to be pretty strong around here. I just don't see the Sonic (or Mega Man) series hanging in popularity with Metal Gear, GTA, SSB, etc. I think its roots as a popular series will only carry it so far against the most popular games of today...

LeonhartForever | Posted 6/17/2006 6:25:26 PM | message detail
Oh, and if you want a more detailed answer, I suppose I'm trying to say that I don't think Sonic is going to win because it's an absolute powerhouse, but because SSB won't be as much of a powerhouse as people are predicting, at least relative to this contest. I think the idea of the Series Contest does have SOME validity to it other than just the name, unlike some people around here.

Yeah, that's why I'm thinking Sonic has a good chance. Super Smash Bros. isn't a popular series, it's just one popular game (Melee).

A still running series pitching 2 for 2 is good enough to be call a "series" by me. Would you rather Halo not be here because it only has two games? Diablo only has two games (hellfire doesn't count, shut up), Warcraft only has four.

Two games is enough to get respect as a series from me.

It's enough to get respect from me too, but the first SSB isn't terribly popular.
