Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
http://sc2k5.com/drupal/node/11

Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

Just a note to the Crew members that they can start writing up their analyses and sending them (preferably by Divison or all of Round 1 at once). I don't need them for a while, but it's good to get an early start. Anything to ask me, just contact me on AIM.

Don't worry, I just got hit by it on Sonic/DMC. I had to skip over it for now.

Does this match even need more than one sentence?

Ahh, the fun of being on the Crew. Stretching out an analysis that could be summed up in 2 sentences into 2 paragraphs. Hell, for some of them I just go way off-topic. (Enjoy KH/HM and SSB/DQ)

I had writer's block in both of those, I remember. Other than that, I believe the only other time I was hit with it was in GTA/Warcraft, for whatever reason.

I did have fun with some of those though...heh.

Same here. I think it's mainly the fact that mario kart is a complete wild card. I'm really not sure how it's going to end up doing. I'm fairly confident that it will be a mid-carder at the very least, and barely make it into the top ten at the very most... the problem is that I'm not even remotely confident in where it will end up.

Pokemon i think is the real wild card. Everyone seems to be thinking it doesn't even have a chance against Metroid. But i really beg to differ, Pokemon is way more popular for the current generation than Metroid is, i feel. I'm saying its beating Metroid, just like last year i had Vincent Valentine going all the way to where he got to, when everyone doubted that, put me in 8th spot on the leadertable.

Except VV was untested - Pikachu got owned and Pokemon GSC lost to Xenogears. I still think it beats Star Ocean, but it stops there.

Oh, I think there's multiple total wild cards in this contest. Elder scrolls would be another game that has the potential of being really damn strong, although a lot of people may disagree with that.

There's bound to be at least one upset that comes right out of left field for the majority of us. Pretty every contest has some matches just about nobody sees coming.

I'm thinking of doing a "Comparisons Game" for each match in the contest, much like how Slowflake did back in spring 2004. You know, comparing both contestants in terms of sales, hype, GameFAQs status, previous contest representation, and intangible factors. That is, unless Slowflake already planned on doing that.

Neither one had an entry in the Best. Game. Ever. contest due to votes being split between the multitude of games in each, so they are both unknowns. Megaman's popularity can probably be correlated fairly well to that of his series, though, while I have absolutely no clue about MK. Less than SSBM and more than SMRPG, I'm confident in saying, but that's a pretty big range. I would take Smash Bros. to beat Megaman any day.

Pokemon has proven its weakness in contest after contest. It let me down both bracket-wise and personally against Xenogears (damn you, Xenogears!) so there is no way in hell I'm taking its side in a match that is even remotely controversial ever again. It will bypass a midrange, mediocre series like Star Ocean easily (Xenogears, at least, had Square backing, and the fact that people seem to like it for whatever reason, while I hear little but 'meh, okay' about SO) but that's as far as I'm willing to place my faith in it.

As for Elderscrolls, it is a PC/Xbox-based series not named Halo. End of discussion.

While I admire your humor, I must back my crazy minded friend HM. I don't get the entire "lol it's square" argument. I mean, does a little logo on the bottom of the box that says sqaresoft really make a difference? If it did, I think it would have sold better than it did, and SO3 absolutely massacres it in terms of sales. Granted sales =/= popularity, but I don't think anyone that bought Xenogears automatically thinks it's a great game just because it's developed by Square.

Star Ocean will be the biggest flop of the contest. Book it.

Unlike Suikoden II or Shadow Hearts: Covenant or Fire Emblem 7 or Xenogears, I have never heard anyone give gushing praise for Star Ocean 3. It's either "yeah, it's good, but it could've been a lot better" or "the plot twist was incredibly stupid" or "the first hour was good but then it became really boring".

The series simply is not that popular. Pokemon is. Make no mistake. Yes, it will receive some antivotes, but it would be absolutely foolish to think that Pokemon does not have a large fanbase on GameFAQs. Even if it doesn't turn out to be very strong, the sheer publicity of the series will be more than enough to put away Star Ocean, which is just another cultish RPG series.

I didn't mean to imply that Square is the only reason that Xenogears won. That match was much harder than I gave it credit for. But I would have taken Xenogears against Star Ocean in a match even then. It's not a widely popular series and none of its installments have been particularly well-liked.

The series simply is not that popular.

Yeah, only about 5 times more popular among the American public than Xenogears. I don't know why it's so hard to get this through to people, I'm not saying better sales than xenogears = instant win against Pokemon, but saying it's not popular is just completely ignorant. And that's only SO3.

Star Ocean 3 has been well liked though, when it first came out there was buzz going around about it on the PS2 boards, and depending on which polls you look at, it ranges from fairing well to poor. I don't like to look at polls as an example, simply because when you throw in a million different options, it's hard to see how it translates into a contest setting, but it's not as if it has performed poorly in every poll we've seen it in. There's simply no way to tell that it's not popular on here.

I don't know why it's so hard to get through to people that sales figures =/= popularity, let alone popularity on GameFAQs. It's not at all ignorant to say it's not popular because it isn't. People buying a game does not translate directly to people enjoying a game. Let us not forget that the numbers of Pokemon copies versus Xenogears copies is greater by an even larger factor.

Where does all of Star Ocean's supposed "popularity" come from?

Is it from the mediocre Japan-only SNES game?

Or from the PS1 game released six years ago and came and went without much hype even then (and sold like 2 copies anyway)?

Or from the PS2 game that received mixed reviews at best and mediocre sales?

Do enlighten me.
