Sonic 3 and Knuckles would probably be the strongest, had it been allowed to be entered.

I always figured S3&K would be stronger than Sonic 2, but Sonic Adventure 2 struck me as the Sonic game that could end up being the strongest. I actually happen to think it is, but I'd feel pretty confident in at least saying there are two games in the Sonic series stronger than Sonic 2.

CJayC needs to start run a series of polls asking for a favorite company series, favorite game in a series, or whatever in this time instead of these rather crappy polls (Who really wants another PS3 price poll? <<).

I'm convinced that CNet uses the poll of the day to gather market research or something. I don't know if I've ever bothered to answer "got (system)?", and I've seen it at least 100 times.

I really don't think S3&K would do any better than S2 against SMW. (holy acronyms!) I think that people will either vote for the Mario game or the Sonic game. it probably wouldn't do any more than 1-2% better.

I could see it doing more than just 1 - 2% better, though not by a whole lot -- that's where Sonic Adventure 2 would come into play!! That said, I think S3&K is quite a bit stronger than Sonic 2, which is really what I was aiming at more than anything. Even adjusting Sonic 2 for the SFF (huzzah!), I wouldn't imagine S3&K only being slightly ahead.

Forget that, I'm calling it SFF. It's a lot easier than using "something fishy" every time I bring up a weird result.

Something fishy eh? Hmm...I like that.

I hereby motion that we give SFF the alternative connotation of "Something Fishy Factor".

I don't think it sounds particularly odd to anyone at this point. I just think the problem people might have with calling it "SFF" is that we generally have applied to the same company or same series and things sound odd when the connection between the two is a similar console.

For example, I said something earlier about SMW/Sonic 2 SFF outside of this topic and someone thought I was nuts for thinking there was SFF, but it's just something that I, and others in the stats topic, do instead of just saying something strange happened in the match. "SFF" has almost become just a way to say "something odd happened" -- SOH!!

That makes me think of something. HM, do you still think that something like New Super Mario Bros. would only help Mario, Luigi, and Bowser and wouldn't help out other Nintendo characters at all? This is more theoretical than actual. Pretend that New Super Mario Bros. was the biggest game to hit the industry this year.

I figured that mnm was thinking about Yoshi. Yoshi isn't in the game but obviously shares a preexisting fanbase with the Mario fanbase, so I would expect him to increase despite not being in the game just because there are more Mario fans being drawn to the site.

No, I meant Nintendo characters overall. Your post made me remember how you jumped on me when I said that all the big releases last year and this year could help Nintendo as a whole, including Link. We already know through Link/Yoshi that the Mario and Zelda fanbase overlap (not that it's really surprising). I never saw why an increase in Mario fans on the site wouldn't help Link. I figured it was you on your usual Cloud high. =P Do you still feel the same way on the matter (in theory)?

HM, do you still think that something like New Super Mario Bros. would only help Mario, Luigi, and Bowser and wouldn't help out other Nintendo characters at all? This is more theoretical than actual. Pretend that New Super Mario Bros. was the biggest game to hit the industry this year.

I think it is primarily going to help out Mario related characters. I don't even think they (characters related to the Mario series) necessarily have to play a big role, or hardly any, in order to get some help. As an example, I would imagine Yoshi getting some help even though he has nothing to do with the game. Do I think it would help out Link or Kirby or whoever? I don't think it would, at least not by anything notable. Perhaps to not make them decrease, but not even a percentage point in boosting would occur, I don't think, especially in someone with a lot of strength like Link.

It's hard for me to picture something like New Super Mario Bros. helping out all Nintendo characters just by releasing. It would be like imagining Advent Children helping out a number of Square characters. I understand the idea behind an influx of fans of a particular company being brought to the site, but it still is kind of hard to see happening.

But, I suppose that it would depend on how big of a hit we're talking. In this particular case, it is the biggest game to release in the industry for the year going by your little scenario. I think if it is that big, then it is probably pulling in a ton of more people than just the normal fans of the company and/or game, and the probability of helping out other characters who are not related goes up some.

If I were to answer this question based on how NSMB is now that it is released, I would say no. It seems to have gathered the normal fans who go out to buy a Mario game, it made its mark as a new game, and it didn't really break any significant ground so far. I think for something to help out characters who are not primarily involved in a notable manner it would require the game to be a huge hit. Something big and massive.

i just spent the last 2 hours watching Billy Madison and catching up by reading 880 posts of contest discussion. i feel somewhat as if i should have been doing something more productive. >_>

btw - thanks to HM a bunch for getting me all those sales numbers i asked for. i had a friend jot them down for me. you were also correct in assuming that i wanted to compare sales numbers of current generation RPGs and Playstation RPG series. however, Star Ocean 3 did drop in price to $19.99 relatively quickly (even though not many RPGs do drop to that price) , which i believe added to it's sales numbers.

alright, since there's no discussion at the moment i'll weigh in my thoughts on the first round matches (well, all of the 4 vs. 5 and 3 vs. 6 matches)

Suikoden vs. Megaman X
- uh, did i say all the 4 vs. 5 matches? never mind. next match.

Pokemon vs. Star Ocean
- alright, HM - you keep saying that Xenogears isn't all that strong of a competitor or have much of a following. but, i would like to refer you to the Top 100 List:

#3: Chrono Trigger - SNES
#16: Kingdom Hearts - PS2
#26: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - SNES
#28: Pokemon Red - GB

#29: Metroid Prime - GC
#30: The Legend of Zelda - NES
#31: Half-Life - PC
#32: Xenogears - PS

#33: Doom - PC
#34: Tetris - GB
#35: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - PS2

#59: Pokemon Gold - GBC

granted, i know this is more of a gauge of hardcore followings than casual followings and it doesn't translate over into a contest match poll. i understand that. but 32nd place isn't bad and it's around some other mid to high level games. AND Xenogears was also the FIFTH best non-Final Fantasy RPG. with all of the non-FF RPGs out there and on that list, 5th is pretty dang good. Star Ocean obviously didn't have enough write-in support, and i highly doubt Star Ocean would have gotten anywhere near that high even if it was on the drop down list.

PLUS - look at how high up Pokemon Red/Blue is. it's the FOURTH best non-FF RPG, above even Xenogears. with Gold/Silver down at #59, it seems to me that G/s isn't even the most popular Pokemon game and R/B might've been pretty even with Xenogears in a contest match. between that and everything else that's been said, i don't see Star Ocean coming any closer than 40%.

Fire Emblem vs. Silent Hill - like i said before, Fire Emblem had been out for about 4 months before it made the Sp2K4 contest. it was the newest game in the contest by a longshot. since then, the series has had 2 more games and ample time to grow in popularity; especially on a site that strongly favors both Nintendo and RPGs. i almost guarantee that if that FFTA vs. FE match was held again today, it would be WAY closer, possibly even with Fire Emblem taking the win.

Castlevania vs. Halo - at first, i thought Castlevania could hold it's own and possibly steal a win. but then i remembered that SotN is by far the most popular Castlevania game. in fact, i'd be willing to bet that the series gets the vast majority of it's popularity from SotN and the GBA games. and would i take SotN over Halo? no....... no, i wouldn't. i do believe that Goldeneye was blasted by SFF, but not enough to bring SotN up to Halo's level.

Grand Theft Auto vs. Warcraft - i'm only repeating what several others have already said:GAMES DO NOT EQUAL CHARACTERS. PERIOD. after whomping GotY polls and doing great in 2K4 and on the list, it's just plain ignorant to think GTA games are not a force on this site. World of Warcraft is huge on the internet, but not that big of a deal on GameFAQS. why this is the most debated first-round match on the BOP absolutely befuddles me.

Sonic the Hedgehog vs. Devil May Cry - at first, i was seriously worried about Devil May Cry pulling off the upset. but after looking at the Capcom poll, i discovered that DMC actually pulled in 4000 less votes than Breath of Fire and only 1000 more votes than Marvel Vs. Capcom. WTF......... i do think that the Sonic series will be weaker than Sonic himself, but it should still be enough to take down DMC. i guess.

Megaman vs. MarioKart - now, this is a real match. i really can see it go either way, but i stand squarely in the Mario Kart camp. there's not a whole lot i can add to this match that hasn't been said over the past 2 topics. but, i will throw this out there:

http://archive.gamespy.com/titlefight/brackets.shtml

yeah, remember that Gamespy Best.Game.Ever contest? well, MarioKart 64 made it to the Elite 8 on a site that heavily favors PC games & FPS and action games. not to mention, it's a site that isn't nearly as Nintendo heavy as our site. it didn't beat many high-tier games, but MK64 did win a 3-way match against Soul Calibur 2 and Metal Gear Solid:

Mario Kart 64 (1996, N64) 5,250 (45%)
Metal Gear Solid (1998, PS1) 3,727 (32%)
Soul Calibur II (2003, multi) 2,778 (23%)

yeah, i know it's a smaller and different pool of voters, but still - Mario Kart is popular.

Elder Scrolls vs. Street Fighter - my initial instinct was to pick Street Fighter, but over the weekend i've doubted SF more and more. Oblivion is the second biggest game on GameFAQS right now, and has been for the past 3 months. i'm not talking just about FAQS either. in the preliminary GotY poll two weeks ago, Oblivion wasn't far behind KH2. on the other hand, the poll simply said Oblivion, NOT Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. hmmmmmmmmmm...... this one could still go either way in my mind. i remain undecided.

i know that's quite a wall of text, but i hope i made some points that haven't been beaten to death already.

anywho, my best guess is that the apparent sitewide shift towards Nintendo made MC appear to drop, when he really didn't. i also attribute CATS fantastic performance to a massively more recognizable pic.

1. Halo / Kingdom Hearts
2. Sonic / Super Smash Bros.
3. Street Fighter / Resident Evil
*leaving "realistic upset potential" zone*
4. Super Mario Bros. / Grand Theft Auto
5. Metal Gear / Fire Emblem (or Silent Hill)
6. Metroid / Pokemon
7. Final Fantasy / Mega Man (or Mario Kart)
8. The Legend of Zelda / Mega Man X

I can't imagine the only unexpected results occurring in Round 1, so I'm betting that at least one of these matches surprises us.

Regardless of what you think the reason is, it's pretty apparent that Frog overperformed in that match, as he bombed the next year against Samus. Chief appearing weaker than the year before after Halo 2 should have been more than enough to support a Frog/Snake overperformance, not to mention Liquid falling as well...

It actually managed to outperform FFT. Considering this and the Top 100 list, I think it and Pokemon are definitely massively underestimated by stats, and I would definitely take Xeno series over SO series.
