Contest time, by design, is different. There is something going on that gets people to keep comming back. I'll definitely agree to that. Why else would the voter turnout increase by 20%+ during a contest? More people stick around. More people tell their friends. More people care. --- Board 8: Where Wii treat each other right. |

But Chichiri is just simply echoing what I along with many others
feel about the match as well. Just because we haven't seen Mario Kart
directly in a match doesn't mean we can't have a feel on how it will
perform... Sure you can, I think Mario Kart will do very well myself. It is a good series. But claiming to know it will win is impossible, so why do it? And why put a quote from me about FR vs FFTA in italics and then talk about Mario Kart? I still don't get that. Do you? I'm honestly asking for someone to spell it out for me. ~Shake --- Hahaha, well, I'm like, in love with undreground hip hop right now. There's this group, Da Backwudz, they sampled the Oompa Loompa song. ~LexisTheGenius. |

More people cheat, too... though that's hopefully only a few thousand votes. More people stick around, for sure... but I'd still be surprised if ~20-30k of those votes weren't from random people who just pop in to get an FAQ and vote on a match while they're here. And even if they do come everyday, it's the people who are actively following the contest that will be more likely to stop and think about voting Mega Man before just voting it on instinct. The Wedgie r goign to crush SMAUS! He r teh greeeeen Mah-riooooo, he r teh smashinatorz!!! Yeah, that's about what I remember from the last time we had an
argument about something having reason to get full carryover in
strength from another contestant. Again with the full carryovr stuff. Who the hell is arguing that? Are you just making up people or did I miss someone? Very possible, since I'm watching a great football mach, but I still get the feeling you mean Leon and me, while we've never ever said that. Sure you can, I think Mario Kart will do very well myself. It is a
good series. But claiming to know it will win is impossible, so why do
it? Can't speak for Chichiri, but I sure as hell don't know if it'll win. It's the underdog. I'm treating it as such. If you put a gun to my head and say "name the winner," I say "Mega Man." However, I feel that this is hands-down the best risk of the contest. The upset potential is definitely there. We've never had a contest where every result went directly as planned, and I doubt this one will be the first. --- Board 8: Where Wii treat each other right. |

You know, people seem to think that because Mega Man is a Noble-niner
and a clear cut favorite over many characters that his series is also
a "Noble-nine" series and people consider it as such. When it comes
down to series, I don't see how Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. can't
be considered up there with other series in terms of popularity... As far as series are concerned, Nintendo has been: Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, Star Fox, Metroid, etc. So why is Mario Kart suddenly getting discounted as a series vs. Mega Man? I mean, I think it would be sensible to think that it's at least a toss up. I think people find safety in taking Mega Man since he's a popular character. But we have no way of gauging Mario Kart's series in popularity vs. Mega Man the character.... I just happen to think that Sonic 2/SMW is a horrible omen about how different games go vs. characters... --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |

"Again with the full carryovr stuff. Who the hell is arguing that?" You're arguing that it'll get a hell of a lot more than any other contestant before it. Really? It has held up on every occssion. Never, NEVER, has the full
strength of one contestant carried over to another. Not a single one.
Why is it you expect them to magically do so now? The voters have shown
time and time again that they are concious of the contest and they have
voted more according to actual likes and dislikes rather than any
sentiment of brand loyalty. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1629 ~Shake Why does this prove anything? Just because YOU don't think FFTA should be that popular? We've seen nothing to refute this result or prove that there's anything wrong with it. --- "What's wrong with boot blacking? I like it very much." |

There have always been a lot of people who thought that FFTA won on
name value alone. Of course, this is because Board 8 portrays it as one

So...yeah...how about Battle.net spamming Diablo to victory over FF? Not even if it was Diablo's best pic against Benjamin from FFMQ, with rallying in every section of B.net, on their peak day, and the poll moved to the bottom of the page. Will the bracket, being on the first page, mean anything in regards to recognizing between X and the original? Considering that MMX appears first in the bracket, I'd like to think it'll be obvious to bracketmakers. As far as the poll goes, well, that may depend on the match pics and how obvious it is that they're separate. Some GTA talk is brewing on the other topic. May as well try and migrate it over here. Personally, other than 90% of GTA's strength being congregated to one system, I don't see any weaknesses in this series. Such a shame that it will be fed to the wolves in Round 2. One of the big arguments for Metal Gear was that it's games were more
"spread out." Whereas all three of the big GTA games made their biggest
impact on the PS2, the MG series had a huge hit on the PS1. A decent
point, but I don't think it would have been enough to change the
outcome. All three big GTA games have proven their popularity on many
occasions. --- Board 8: Where Wii treat each other right. |
swirIdude | Posted 6/10/2006 2:08:28 PM | message detail |
How so? We saw Vice City do a little better than MGS2 on SSBM. I could
see the MG series being a lot stronger than that since MGS2 isn't the
biggest game in that series, whereas VC and SA both seem to fuel the
GTA series. As far as I can tell, one is not significantly stronger
than the other (though I'd take SA over VC). --- Xbox 360 melts disks! And people made jokes about the PS3 being a grill. ~bokunokuso |

SA handily beat MGS3 in the GotY poll. FFT gave MGS a nailbiter. I'd go with GTA in a close one, personally. --- "People who play RPGs are depressed gamers who like to sit alone in their dark rooms and play slow games" - Hiroshi Yamauchi |

GTA:VC barely lost to Metroid Prime while GTA:SA crushed Metroid Prime 2. And seeing how Metroid Prime 2 went up in percentage with the absence of the other Nintendo games, it's safe to say that the Nintendo fanbase backed Metroid Prime 2. Plus there's the fact that GTA:SA placed 11th on the Top Games list vs. #35 for Vice City. San Andreas is much more popular on this site. And for those talking about Warcraft 3 in the Warcraft/GTA discussion, take a look at that Vice City final poll. --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |

And note that GTA III and San Andreas both beat respective Metal Gear
Solid games in thos PS2 GotY polls, granted MGS2 is hurt by the
presence of FFX. MGS3 has no such excuse. And the bottom line is that
the GTA fanbase on this site is just as big, if not bigger than the MGS
fanbase. Warcraft shouldn't even be in the equation. --- Nominate Carmen Sandiego for SC2k6 Currently playing: Fable, MGS3:S, GTA:SA, MMAC |

I think people have this mental roadblock in that they assume GTA is
