Board 8: Where Wii treat each other right.

The topic seems to be mostly past arguing MM/MK, but I made this topic for interest's sake: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs9/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=28592733

Not one person has MM > MK > MMX, but a few people have MMX > MK > MM. I don't doubt that we'd see similar results for the public at large.

Also, with regards to Sonic's popularity: http://www.everythingandnothing.org.uk/vg/worldtotals.php?name=sonic&console=&publisher=&sort=america

Sonic 2 is hardly all there is for Sonic. Plus, how many of you would take GTA over Sonic? GTA's least popular game came within 5000 votes of Super Smash Bros.'s best, after all.

I've seen that one. Hey, I'm not a believer, but Warcraft is riding on WoW entirely, and with a userbase that big you can't rule out anything.

I don't think it's that extreme.

All right, maybe not that extreme, but the lengths the supporters are going to in order to defend Warcraft in the match is absurd. All I've been hearing is Blizzard vote rallies this and Starcraft that and millions of online players whatever. WoW alone can't stand up to the GTA franchise as a whole, and even the rest of the Warcraft series won't help much.

It's freakin' GTA !!

It all boils down to one question, as any of the numbered Warcraft games clearly won't be of much help: Is World of Warcraft stronger then the GTA franchise?

I don't like the odds for WoW here, but there's a slim chance.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1871

World of Warcraft wasn't even stronger than Half-Life 2, which GTA: San Andreas beat handily. World of Warcraft stronger being stronger than the GTA franchise shouldn't even be in the discussion. 5 million people worldwide vs. 10 million+ people. And the GTA fanbase is much more present on this site than Warcraft. The only hope that Warcraft has is for vote rallying beyond anything we've ever seen on this site.

A Warcraft win would take an absolutely immense effort. Starcraft/Halo and Mario/Cloud are easily the biggest rally-fests we've ever seen. WoW would need to make them both look like child's play.

Nope, because Diablo in a sense confirmed it in the Villains Contest, despite the pathetic competition.

I guess one could make that argument, but one can also scrounge together two counter-points:

1. Diablo never had a match so close that it hinted at something fishy. Starcraft had three.
2. Diablo worked his magic in a completely opposite time of day. From that respect, he was more like Halo/Master Chief than Starcraft.

I know. I was just looking at it from the average Board 8er's view. Blizzard getting them once can eventually be overlooked, but when it gets them twice, it's a "trend."

Honestly, Diablo would at least stand a puncher's chance against GTA. It should've switched places with Warcraft.

This Diablo talk forced me to look back at some of his SpC2K5 poll updates. Man, that Bison match was a thing of beauty. One of our (Diablo supporters) biggest arguments was the after school vote. We kept thinking and hoping that it would propell our demon to victory. As morning dawns, Bison starts making his comeback. He chips away at the lead for four hours, bringing it under 700. Just then, the clock chimes ~3:30 EST, and Diablo just explodes. I've never seen a voter shift predicted and carried out so accurately. It was contest clockwork.

And it's not like people stopped playing games after the NES. Most likely they went on to play the NES where Super Mario Kart went on to sell more games than all the Mega Man games combined. Even if the Mega Man fanbase sticks devoutly to it, it's not like Super Mario Kart doesn't have a fanbase of its own...

I'm not trying to deny that Mario Kart has a fanbase because there are plenty of people who like the games. I don't buy anything like SFF either way to be honest. It gets even worse when we try to show something a significant Super Mario game did and say Mario Kart can do the same. That just doesn't make sense. Mario Kart is not nearly a favorite the way a game like Super Mario World would be.

It seems quite a few people hold Mario Kart DS as a favorite, and I'd argue that the console Mario Kart games are even more popular.

Perhaps a favorite for the system. I'm not trying to say that Mario Kart doesn't have people who love the series, but I also don't think there are many people who think it's the best series out there. How many people do you know that have Mario Kart on their Top 10 games? Same for Mega Man. I think Mega Man is far more of a "favorite" among people. It has a fanbase that definitely prefers it above all other games, or most games at least. Mario Kart definitely has fans -- it has such a wide appeal with being an easy pick up and play game. That may not be the best explanation, and you may not agree, but I hope I at least gave you an idea of what I'm trying to talk about. >>

(I'm always beat after a long day of swimming. <3)

Mario Kart 64: 4.8 million
Mario Kart: DD!!: 2.2 million (3+ million counting bundled sales)
Mario Kart: Super Circuit: 2.1 million
Mario Kart DS: 900,000+ (1.1 million counting bundled sales)
Super Mario Kart: Not sure, but I know it's over a million

Here is what I have. There are differences, but we basically have the same idea, except for Mario Kart 64 ...

Mario Kart 64 (N64) -- 5.52 million
Super Mario Kart (SNES) -- 3.4 million
Mario Kart : Double Dash!! (GCN) -- 3.2 million (bundles included)
Mario Kart Super Circuit (GBA) -- 2.3 million
Mario Kart DS (NDS) -- 1.3 million (bundled)

Sure, there are people like that on this board, but we have no idea how this site as a whole feels about Mega Man games... I don't think Mega Man is as big a favorite overall as you are letting on.

While I won't deny that I was thinking of this board, it isn't the only place I had in mind. Of course, it is true that we have no way of telling how things would go simply because we have not seen either in a contest before. Nothing is set either way, but I was just throwing out that particular idea. I certainly believe it's true, but I can see how someone wouldn't or how it might not be the case. It should be a really close match.

while I agree that Mega Man has more "hardcore fans", I think that Mario Kart has more fans. this is completely my opinion and I have no way of arguing it.

I'm gonna go try and throw together all series/game of the year-related polls into one post that we can reference. I think it'll be useful.

I'm glad we're discussing Elder Scrolls/Street Fighter in the other topic (thanks, creative!). It really seems like a toss-up to me, but I honestly think the most decisive factor will be the match pic. I don't know if fans of "Morrowind" and "Oblivion" will necessarily recognize the term "Elder Scrolls" as representing their games. That isn't to say they're stupid, but it all has to do with representation; remember that Half-Life fans barely knew who Gordon Freeman was in 2002, I believe.

That being said, I think Elder Scrolls beats Street Fighter with the right pic and loses without it. That's how close I can see the match being. I pretty much have negative faith in Street Fighter being a major contender at this point, but I of course have nothing to base this off of.

What kind of pic is "the right pic," though? If it's just the series logos, Elder Scrolls loses. If it's an actual picture (meaning it'll probably go up against Ryu), Elder Scrolls loses.

I mean a pic representing the actual games and not just a logo that reads "Elder Scrolls." Mind you, I don't think highly of Street Fighter's strength (obviously), so I think it could affect the outcome of the match. I have no basis for this, though. Go me.

Box art for the latest game?

Hmm... I don't think that's very likely. The first round usually has the "fairest" or "most regulated" picture, depending on your definition. CJayC usually saves most side things (in this case, specific game stuff, I guess) for later rounds. I'm thinking we just get series logo or something of that nature for round one.

Wait... why are we even doing this? How many people who have purchased Oblivion honestly don't know the game's full title? These people bought the game. I'm sure they've spent more than five seconds staring at the box and startup screen.
