Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 286

I sent one of those feedback tickets to him some time ago, but it hasn't been looked at yet though. It would just be nice if he would post something showing he hasn't forgotten about the contest or that it's still on or something. Being left in the dark after three weeks sort of sucks.

I just don't understand why he posted the nominations so early if he intended on starting the contest so late in the year. I mean, I really, really doubt that the results change all that much in terms of what series make it in between one week or so after opening and onward. The fact that it's only been posted on this board would also mean that he isn't trying to maxinmize the amount of nominations coming in.

Even if the contest were to start in July, I would mind, I'd just like a bracket to be released so we can start debating the controversial matches/ make really crazy ass predictions that large sums of people get behind.

I really want to support Mario Kart. This has to still happen.

Seeing Leon's retooled brackets (not to rain on his parade or anything) has inspired me to post a retooled bracket of my own - 2005, with all different first-round matches but the same seeding. I wanted to try and imagine what we would have thought had the bracket looked like this:

Mushroom Division:
1. Mario
8. Yuri Hyuga
4. Riku
5. Carl Johnson
3. Kefka
6. Chun Li
2. Lloyd Irving
7. Rikku

Mario takes it, of course, but the bottom four-pack could be really interesting - would Rikku, the 7-seed, be the most likely candidate for victory? I could see Kefka/Chun Li being a good match as well. Also, Riku gets to prove himself early with a potentially decisive victory - and, perhaps, a chance to pull a Shadow on Mario?

20XX Division:
1. Mega Man
8. Cecil
4. Gordon Freeman
5. King of All Cosmos
3. Tifa Lockheart
6. Ryu Hayabusa
2. Sora
7. Pac-Man

I tried so hard to givce Gordon a match he'd be close with, but this was the next-best thing. :-( Tifa/Sora was interesting before I found out Tifa was in KH2; now it's likely to be another Sora/Aeris affair. Either way, Mega Man gets yet another potential SFF beatdown after he takes the division. Hooray!

Chaos Division:
1. Sonic the Hedgehog
8. Conker
4. Kratos Aurion
5. Sam Fisher
3. Kratos (God of War)
6. Tommy Vercetti
2. Revolver Ocelot
7. Zidane

Fairly straightforward first four-pack, but a twisted bottom one. Who even takes this? My money's on Kratos (GoW), but the last match confuses the pants off me. Also, this way, we could hopefully see both Kratoses against a common opponent.

Gear Division:
1. Solid Snake
8. CATS
4. Donkey Kong
5. Vincent Valentine
3. Ganondorf
6. Vyse
2. Luigi
7. Albert Wesker

Easy first-round matches to call, but it's hell for Snake after that. This is your standard "Let's pit Snake against Vincent and/or Ganon" division, with a potentially interesting match with Ganon/Luigi thrown in. It's not even over for Snake after this - if he beats this division, he's got Sonic to contend with for title of "weakest of the Noble Nine."

Dream Division:
1. Kirby
8. Manny Calavera
4. Sarah Kerrigan
5. Zelda
3. Yoshi
6. Knuckles the Echidna
2. Auron
7. Agent 47

Holy midcarder division, Batman! This reminds me of the actual Devil Division in that there are five characters who could probably put in a good show for control of the division. Knuckles/Yoshi could be hell, Zelda/Kerrigan might have been a tough match to debate (but then Kerrigan would get, what, two percent on Zelda?), and then we get all-out midcarder hell in the semis. Auron/Zelda is probably the safest bet, but don't count out Kirby.

Devil Division:
1. Dante
8. Jin Kazama
4. Vivi
5. Frog
3. Magus
6. Alucard
2. Ryu
7. Big Boss

Another toughie. Now there's six potential division winners! Were this before 2005 actually happened, I'd bet anything the "clear winner" would have Magus over Frog, but now almost anything's possible. Would Frog even make it past Vivi, let alone the boosted Dante? Does Magus's overrated bust give Alucard and Ryu - who also seemed to drop in the stats - a chance? And what about JIN KAZAMA?!? With any luck, we'd get a chance to settle Dante/Magus debates and avoid a repeat division final of Dante/Ryu. And hey, this may very well be the closest we'd get to a Dante vs. Kirby match.

This was Ed Bellis.
Ed Bellis | Posted 6/1/2006 7:45:17 AM | message detail
Flood Division:
1. Master Chief
8. Terra
4. Tidus
5. Leon Kennedy
3. Bowser
6. Laharl
2. Squall Leonhart
7. KOS-MOS

Some potential upsets here. Master Chief/Tidus/Leon could potentially be rather interesting, and were this pre-contest, I'm sure many would have considered taking Terra over the Chief. And Bowser/Squall is a match I've wanted to see for quite some time.

Zebes Division:
1. Samus Aran
8. Joanna Dark
4. Ness
5. Diablo
3. Zero
6. Yuna
2. Crono
7. Geno

So this is the price for all those midcarder division - stacking the last one to holy hell! This division belongs to the winner of Samus/Crono, of course, with poor Zero being thrown to the wolves in the middle. Ness/Diablo might turn some heads, but overall it's an uneventful division, with the winner here getting basically a bye to Mario in the finals.

Cool bracket, Ed! See, this is why CJay ought to consult at least a couple people from the Stats topic when putting his brackets together. He's getting better at it, but is still a long way from crafting something where as many matchups as possible are in doubt, or at least statistically interesting.

That's because he's hardly popular outside of it, and he's already Nintendo. I doubt it would provide a large boost one way or the other, but every little bit helps, especially when your franchise is primarily non-Nintendo.

Well, Pikachu's fans were already primarily Nintendo fans, as opposed to Square/Disney. This would be exposing Sora to a new audience, and exposing him more than Chain of Memories did, in all likelihood.

It also doesn't really help Pikachu that everyone hates him and he faced someone else who was in both SSB games in 2003.

Pikachu is already from a Nintendo established franchise and is still absolute fodder. I doubt Nintendo characters coming from established franchises are going to get any notable boosts from being included in the game. I do think it has the potential to do a lot more for people like Snake and Sora, who come from other franchises that are not really associated with Nintendo. It probably would not be astronomic, but Sora would likely get a nice solid boost from being in the game ... if he actually makes. Man, I hope he does.

If SE got on board, I think they'd be more likely to give Nintendo the rights to characters that appeared on Nintendo consoles (Crono, Locke, Terra, Cecil) than those that are primarily associated with the Playstation.
