Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
http://sc2k5.com/drupal/node/11

Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

Seriously though, if it makes the contest, I cannot see it getting a seed to stand a chance at winning...and I would think it would be one of the four weakest series in the contest if it earns a spot.

Out of all the fighting game characters who haven't made it yet, I think he would be the strongest.

Sub-Zero > Akuma, period.

I contend that Akuma would beat every single person that won the Nomination tourney in a fight. And I'll believe it till he makes a contest and proves me wrong.

Sub-Zero > Akuma, period.

I'm interested in seeing Akuma in action too, but I've grown skeptical of his strength. Neither Chun-Li nor M. Bison are exactly power-houses, nor was Ken the last time we saw him. Knowing that Street Fighter 2 is the most popular game of its series and that Akuma isn't in it, it's hard to make much of a case for Akuma to be on their level...and Scorpion 2k3 (he was behind Auron/Seph in 2k4, so I'm ignoring that one) is right on par with Chun-Li (the strongest of the three mentioned when you exclude Ken's 2k2 performance), too. No matter how much stronger Sub-Zero is than Scorpion, it's likely Sub-Zero is stronger than Scorpion...

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1788

...so the odds are already against Akuma; we know Akuma is no Ryu, I doubt he's near the fan-favorite that Ken or Chun-Li is, and he doesn't carry the same weight as being the playable final boss in SF2 and other games (though I want to say Akuma has been a final boss before?). As long as MK's/Scorpion's stock hasn't dropped much/any since 2k3, then Sub-Zero should be stronger than we ever saw Scorpion being -- and MK has done more to keep popular lately than SF, so I'm not going to sweat. Therefore, that's a big hurdle for Akuma...

...but wait, there are those who think fighting fans will side with SF against MK, so I'll do what I do best lately: bring up the Top 100 List. SF2 got #47 and MK1 got #58...SF2 is undoubtedly the favorite of the series whereas MK1 is practically at a three-way tie for third in the series in this poll while MK2 doubles all the other options:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1789

I'm not saying MK > SF, but I'm saying it ain't exactly a big gap between them like so many assume -- certainly not a gap where the assumed casual-favorite of the SF post-prime games will be so favored over the fan-favorite of the MK series. If anything, SF and MK are the very representations of hardcore and casual fighting fans; who knows how many times I have heard of SF fans ripping into MK games, and I've never heard of MK tournaments (though I'm sure they're out there). A casual-favorite from the more technical fighting series against the face of the more casual fighting series isn't going to fair well for Akuma, especially on top of everything else I mentioned.

Sub-Zero > Akuma, period.

And you're basing all of this on, "AKUMA WASN'T IN THE ORIGINAL STREET FIGHTER II! THAT MEANS HE CAN'T HAVE ANY STRENGTH!"

That is utter bull. Look me straight in the face and tell me that Shadow isn't popular because he wasn't in the original 2-D and most popular Sonic games.

Oh right, you can't.

Akuma is a casual's dream, and the Alpha series, believe it or not, was a popular one. SFA3 was a million seller, a rarity for the series. He's been in all of the crossovers (you know, those Marvel vs. Capcom ones where Strider HAD to get some strength from to outdo SCORPION in SC2K2, and you can't make any excuses on that one because they both faced Link straight up).

And I'll just say that you're wrong there. Any casual fighting game fan who's ever played a game with Akuma in it loves him.

Yeah I'm really thinking the SF Alpha and Marvel vs Capcom games influence is underestimated by this board. Morrigan and Strider ended up in almost exactly the same place in 2002. Seems a little too convenient to me to be purely coincidence. Akuma not being in pre Super SF2 Turbo games can only hurt him, but is it enough to counteract his casual favoritism?

Add to that, I still doubt Sub-Zero being better than Scorpion is not a lock by any means. So there's the MK poll, but I just can't see Sub-Zero being vastly stronger outside of SFF situations. They're both ninjas, and their stories are too deeply intertwined. If you like one, you probably like both at least somewhat. (I personally prefer Scorpion, myself... but I can't actually think of too many characters I like less than Scorp but more than Sub-Zero)

Akuma could beat Sub-Zero, I'd think.
---
My sincerest apology, brother. I was so eager to see you and couldn't concentrate on the preparation of the bash.
HaRRicH | Posted 5/27/2006 9:03:02 PM | message detail
I never said he can't have strength, and he COULD be the second-strongest of the series...but if you don't think he's at a disadvantage in having the same weight of the SF fanbase behind him as Ken or Chun-Li because of it, think again. Even so, again, Scorpion is on-par or above either of their last performances.

You're right, I can't about Shadow, but I also bet Shadow is more of a favorite in the Sonic series than Akuma is in the Street Fighter series...plus, Shadow is a direct physical clone. I understand that Akuma's story is something along the lines of being an evil Ryu (I suppose much in the same way as Shadow), but Akuma simply doesn't resemble Ryu as much as Shadow does Sonic. Put stock into the clone-theory accordingly -- it likely ain't worth much.

SFA3 may be popular, fine. It may be a million-seller, fine. I will bet my bottom dollar that, amongst the fighting fans here, SF2 is still noticably more prefered than SFA3...but, I can't prove that, so I'll forgive you for ignoring this point if you insist.

Akuma was in the MvC games, yes. Guess who else were in it? Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and M. Bison. Scorpion, again, is on their levels (except Ryu's), and you haven't touched the idea of Sub-Zero being stronger than that. As for Strider being stronger than Scorpion, yep, he barely outdid him against Link in 2k2 than Scorpion (24.23% to 24.02%)...though tell me, would you take that pick? If it came down to it, would you take Strider > Scorpion? It should also be noted that Scorpion 2k3 is stronger than Scorpion 2k2 (enough to beat Strider, statistically).

The casual-favorite from the hardcore series against the face of the casual series isn't going to fair as well for Akuma as you hope, whether MvC's influence is under-estimated here or not.

They're ninjas with color-swaps, they can't be told apart...but they still favored Sub-Zero noticably over Scorpion and the other MK characters in the poll. People do acknowledge different characters as different characters, believe it or not. Besides, Ryu and Ken are not so different afterall -- their stories are intertwined, and their movesets are very similar as well, moreso than Sub-Zero's and Scorpion's).
