while the character battle is most likely going to be pretty predictable again.

WHAAAA-AA-AAT?!? Nobody can even agree on where many characters stood last year, much less after you throw KH2 and the FF7 spin-offs into the mix. If anything, the prediction period is going to be the bloodiest we've had since 2003.

Chichiri, while LoZ could have been SFF'd by SMB3, it almost couldn't have been much and I don't think it did at all. We have never seen anything LoZ-related be SFF'd for sure in the contests except for Link/Ganon. Ganon practically did what he was supposed to do against Samus, then she turned around and was killed by SFF against Mario. LoZ's performance still puts it where many of us already thought it should be -- the second strongest NES game.

It's a tough sell.

Concerning yesterday's poll, it's worth mentioning that KH2 hasn't released over Europe yet (which does account for a solid 10% of the site), certainly when comparing it to KH, which was, I believe, released in Europe at the time of its poll.

Maybe I should have phrased that differently. But basically, in the character battle we at least have a reasonable idea where every returning character stands. There will be some close matches, and maybe one or two total surprises. In this series contest, we don't even have an approximate strength for anything.

My ideal Contest setup would be

Summer Contest* - Character Battle on even years, Great Game Contest on odd years

followed later on by a

Winter Contest - something new and (somewhat) interesting every year; generally a "mini-Contest" with 32 contestants. Series, Females, Villains, Consoles, Game Companies, Sidekicks, and the like

* starting in JUNE, not August!

I'm not sure that a Great Game contest every two years would be that great an idea. Do we really get that many good games released every two years that there would be a decent shake up in the bracket? I think that every three years is often enough to be honest. Have one in 2007 and you should have the completion of the current console generation and the starting of a new one to factor in (along with the older snubs).

Having said that, a new one any time soon would be great as long as it's random and not done by generations.

Mac Arrowny | Posted 5/23/2006 12:48:34 PM | message detail
jt, there are enough good games that we could have a bracket made entirely of snubs and it would still be awesome. And some new years are so good that even if there were a game contest the year directly after a previous one there would be plenty of great new games. See: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2007. Hopefully the next generation will pump out a string of awesome games again soon.

There are way more great games than great characters, and way more good new games every year than good new characters. So I think a game contest can happen happen at least as often as the character battle can. (However, I don't really think the character battle should happen every year).

I still supporting waiting until Twilight Princess comes out to have a new game contest. It might be the only game that'll ever be able to beat Final Fantasy VII.

The problem with that is that games take a while to get all their sales. For example, Super Mario 64 sold about 4 million copies in its first year, and went on to sell 12 million. IIRC, FFVII has sold more than a million copies since the PS2 came out. I doubt TP will be strong enough to defeat FFVII at least until it goes Player's Choice, and that won't be 'til 2008. 2k7 TP would probably beat WW somewhat handily, but I doubt it would be much above SSBM (keep in mind that SSBM and WW have almost certainly risen in strength since 2k4).

I would be rather disappointed if the character battle stopped being held every year. That's definitely my favorite contest of them all. We have seen that there's reason enough to hold one every year. They don't lack entertainment and are certainly not overly predictable when we have a good bracket.

LeonhartForever | Posted 5/23/2006 2:43:44 PM | message detail
I personally find characters are easier to get excited about and rally behind than games are. I wouldn't want the character contest to take a year off.

Of course, maybe that's because my personal favorite game got ripped off by the stupid one per series per generation rule last time, and if that rule is ever implemented, it has no chance of making it.

And it could possibly cost one of my favorite next-gen games (MGS3) from making it in the off chance that MGS2 could out-nominate it. The games contest could have definitely been even better than it was if there hadn't been those bad stipulations.

*still sees no bracket announcement*

C'mon, Ceej. Tell me that you already have it made and you've just conveniently forgotten to let us know.
