It seems like it. I know it pretty much stands no chance against the
likes of The Legend of Zelda just based on how the food chain seems to
go based on the character and game contests. I think it could,
potentially, help out a bit if people did not bother to think, "Well,
this must mean platformers and not Mario Kart/Golf/Tennis/RPG/etc." It
just seems that there is so much great strength to pull from that it
could maybe do something a bit unexpected. Might be too much of a
stretch, though, I suppose. I guess I'll just wait on the bracket, which CJayC needs to post now!! --- “I haven’t invested as much time into any game as I have [Twilight Princess].” – Shigeru Miyamoto |
MnMZero | Posted 5/16/2006 11:07:31 PM | message detail |
I know people don't think of them all the same, but I'm sure a good amount will vote for Super Mario based on how much they like all of the Mario games... unless they are specifically researching the bracket and looking at multiple series. Besides, what if Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, etc. don't make it? Wouldn't you think that people that like those games will vote under the Mario name? --- *Is therealmnm* Proud Supporter of Zero in SC2k5 |
Heroic Mario | Posted 5/16/2006 11:12:07 PM | message detail |
That's what I was thinking. If it is a "Best. Series. Ever." and Mario
is represented without specification like Super Mario (Platformer),
then it would seem to me that most voters would just voted based on how
they like the entirety of the Mario series as opposed to just the
platformer games, even though those undoubtedly generate the most
liking. I figured that might make something a little more interesting with Final Fantasy -- there's no way Zelda is losing to another Nintendo franchise -- if it were to face off against it, especially in a final situation where Final Fantasy has maybe offed Zelda. I doubt it matters much, but Nintendo is coming off an E3 filled with the next big Mario game and New Super Mario Bros. just releasing today could do something. Maybe not ... But yeah, maybe they would not think that "Super Mario" necessarily means everything, but they might vote for their liking of the whole Mario series. I'm not sure I would see the average voter thinking, "Well I liked Mario Kart, but I don't think that's this ..." Maybe I'm wrong though. --- “I haven’t invested as much time into any game as I have [Twilight Princess].” – Shigeru Miyamoto |
transience | Posted 5/16/2006 11:17:40 PM | message detail |
to me, Mario + its spinoffs isn't that much stronger than just Mario
alone anyway. Mario Kart is really the only series of note. Mario's
spinoffs are good, but I don't think they'll make much of a difference
at all in a contest like this. as for NSMB, if the match was today you might have something, but we're likely not having a contest match for a month or so. it'll still matter, but not nearly as much as if the match was in the next week or so. plus, it won't really matter until at least the semifinals, which is yet another month after the contest starts. --- xyzzy |
MnMZero | Posted 5/16/2006 11:25:47 PM | message detail |
I agree that Mario having it's spinoffs won't make that
much a difference in the Mario series' overall strength, since Mario is
already popular enough. But don't write off the strength of each of
those series individually. Any Mario game can do a good bit of damage
in this contest given the right circumstances. Let the Mario RPG series
take on the like of, say... CASTLEVANIA!!! It could easily do some
damage. =P As for New Super Mario Bros., it may be early, but don't underestimate it's influence. I'm sure within the next two weeks that the game will bring a good deal of people to the site. Sure, it's no KH2 as far as board activity is concerned. But as far as people coming onto GameFAQs and checking out the FAQs and stuff for the game, it may help out the Mario series quite a bit. Again, it's a moot point seeing how it's already pretty much agreed upon that Mario beats anything but Zelda and FF. Just a thing to keep an eye on. --- *Is therealmnm* Proud Supporter of Zero in SC2k5 |
transience | Posted 5/16/2006 11:33:02 PM | message detail |
oh, I'm not; I'm saying that the only series that would significantly
help Mario's strength is the Kart series. I actually forgot about Mario
RPG, that would be another. a lot of Mario's spinoffs would have some
decent strength in a contest setting, definitely. as for NSMB, maybe it's just me but I can't imagine going to GF for a Mario game unless it was uber-hard or something. (I see it's already #5 though, so maybe I'm full of crap - though it may be people just curious about the game.) once two months have passed, I wouldn't expect NSMB to have nearly as much of an impact as it would right now. (ps: its! its! its!) --- xyzzy |

GameSpot has officially caught me off-guard: What about the Wii excites you most? The controller's motion-sensing abilities. 9770 (32%) The return of the Zapper. 5950 (20%) The games. 4777 (16%) Being able to access old Nintendo games through the arcade. 3552 (11%) Something else. 513 (1%) Nothing about the Wii excites me. 5087 (17%) It strikes me as very odd that, for as great of a line-up as the Wii has coming and the huge news of Solid Snake in SSBB, "the games" is in FOURTH to "the controller's motion-sensing abilities" (which was a big cause of hate just months ago), "the return of the Zapper" (made possible through the controller's motion-sensing abilities), and "nothing about the Wii excites me" (after its huge E3 showing?). GameSpot is more of a casual site than GameFAQs, too -- I would have figured they would have been more against the controller than this..... --- Miss my Four-Pack Of Fun? When's the last time I actually posted here.... I'm surprised nobody compared the polls yet, quite a jump for a 2-week span... Do you plan to buy a PlayStation 3? May 1st Yes, I've already pre-ordered one - 1.51% ---\ Yes, I'll definitely get one - 31.32% -------------/ 32.83% Probably, if it's priced right - 26.47% ----------\ Maybe, I need to play one first - 9.43% -------/ 35.90% Probably not, it sounds too expensive - 12.78% No, I'll be happy with a PC/360/Wii - 18.49% May 17th Yes, the full $600 version - 22.62% --------\ Yes, the limited $500 version - 4.22% -------/ 26.84% (-6.99%) Maybe, if I see some good games - 15.05% (-20.85%) Probably not, it's just too expensive - 24.93% (+12.15%) No, I'd rather play a Wii/PC/360 - 33.19% (+14.70%) Same question, pretty much the same choices, and a huge jump. --- SpC2k4 Triple Crown WINNER (Oracle, Betting, Spread Betting) SC2k4 - 12th place |

Heh... Probably, if it's priced right - 26.47% Probably not, it's just too expensive - 24.93% One can also infer that $600 was probably not the right price (go figure!), which would lead to a big jump from probably so to probably not. That's probably the biggest reason for the jump I'd say. As for the final option... all Micro$oft's doing!
