Seriously though, does anyone think Solid Snake will be stronger in
2006 than last year? He does have MGS3: Subsistence and probably the
two biggest occurrences at this year's E3. Will it be enough to bring him out of the basement of the Noble Nine in 2006? Probably not, but it should keep him from letting Bowser or Ganon knock him off. 2007, on the other hand, watch out. Rumor is that MGS4 will come out on July 7, 2007 (the 20th anniversary of the original Metal Gear's release). If you look at the MGS4 logo, you can see a 7/7/7 if you look at the lettering upside down. Heh...forgive me, but I'm imagining Solid Snake turning into a
multi-platform Mario. I, for one, would be entertained for hours if I
saw him make a Dance Dance special appearance, then follow up with
Super Solid Snake Strikers. Finish it off by having his own party-game

Snake being in SSB is extremely shocking, and quite significant for contest purposes. Seeing as how effective KH and FF was, and seeing as how I think this is even bigger, This is a major exaggeration though. KH was a storyline oriented game; SSB is not, and also individual characters aren't "forced" upon you - people tend to pick who they already like. Certainly I expect Snake to receive help from this, but I'd be stunned if the impact approached KHF levels. Also like most I now expect Sonic to make the game too. Bravo Nintendo. This is a major exaggeration though. I really do not see how. I consider this even more significant and potentially more boost worthy than Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy. KH featured introduced these characters to a new fanbase, though brought them over from the previous PlayStation console. Solid Snake is being brought over into a prominent Nintendo game on an entirely new console that is likely going to be more successful than the GameCube. It may be a fighting game, but the fact that you can actually play and control Solid Snake is huge. He is appearing on a brand-new Nintendo console in a game that is guaranteed to sell millions all over the world. They both share the thing about reaching a new fanbase. There is that combined with Metal Gear Solid 4 within the same year -- both in 2007. I really do not see how it is a major exaggeration. Kingdom Hearts being "story oriented" does not strike me as the actual reason for their boosts being monstrous. I think it had more to do with the fact that they were reaching new fans who were not the pre-existing fans behind characters like Cloud and Squall. Perhaps it will not be overall that huge on its own, but a major exaggeration? Not at all. There has been nothing similar to this in the past. A storyline exposure would most likely (perhaps not, but most likely) be more intense than being one of many possible characters to choose from. I just still don't see Snake posing much challenge to the Big Three though, and a Cloud/Squall KH level boost would pretty much imply that, so I think expecting that kind of boost is going overboard. more intense than being one of many possible characters to choose from. I think he's just more than one of many playable characters to choose from. He definitely stands out from the rest of the typical Nintendo cast. I think it will help him get more exposure than usual simply because this game is a guaranteed million seller in every territory. He appears in a game that really just is not his typical fanbase. I think it could even be more beneficial if he ends up being one of the better characters in the game, which would generate more discussion about him from people who play the game. I just still don't see Snake posing much challenge to the Big Three though, and a Cloud/Squall KH level boost would pretty much imply that, so I think expecting that kind of boost is going overboard. But him overtaking Mario to become the next strongest guy is a possibility I'd say. It sounds pretty crazy for someone to challenge the Big Three at this point, but if we are ever going to see something like that happen I think now is that time. The interesting thing about Snake is that he is going to be pulling from not only Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but Metal Gear Solid 4 released during that same year. I think there is some threatening potential in those two games ... But maybe not. I suppose we'll have to see. I disagree completely, as the characters in those games already have other games in which their roles were far more prominant, and their characters fleshed out far more. I never really looked at it as creating new fans, but rather, giving them a reason to come to the site, the change in voter pool theory, which I believe is a much more significant one than the former. Sure there may be a few youngins who never played some of the older FF's from which those characters appear in KH, but I don't think that number is all that high, especially when you're probably only talking about going as far back as 7, at least contest wise here at the site. Anyway, moving on Snake is being introduced to a entirely new crowd, he's from a "stealth" 3rd person shooter who is now going to be displayed in a party style fighting game. Right there, that would be reason for a significant boost in my eyes, now to add on top of that, he's going to a system where he hasn't had an original release since the NES, sure you could argue it was on another system first, but really, who played it? You may want to argue about the twin snakes, but it didn't sell fantastically, and it was a port with updated graphics from PS1. On top of all that, the backlash agaisnt it from MGS purists was pretty harsh. Not everyone mind you, but a lot (I still personally don't see why, other than nostalgic feelings.) With SSB:B he is being placed into a situation where the game he is featured in is guaranteed to sell millions, unless of course the patriots bomb us first and the game never gets to be released in America, but then who would really care about a GameFAQs character contest? Well I probably would, but that's besides the point. So here we have a character being featured in a completely new genre, a game that will sell millions, has arguably helped out other Nintendo characters, and is appearing in an original game, on a console he hasn't appeared on in a very long time. To say the boost that many are expecting is being exaggerated is foolish. I just still don't see Snake posing much challenge to the Big Three though, and a Cloud/Squall KH level boost would pretty much imply that, so I think expecting that kind of boost is going overboard. But him overtaking Mario to become the next strongest guy is a possibility I'd say. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but Snake would need to boost 12% to roll with the big boys up there, and no chance in HELL am I calling for him to do that, maybe he will, but I don't think so, I don't believe others are either, with the exception of the last post made by HM. Even then I'm not so sure he's even sold on the idea or has the credibility to do so (MM for Champ! >_>). Now the largest "boost" from KH was Cloud IIRC, and that was a 14% boost. Sure you could believe that was actually because of KH, or you could be sensible and realize that 2K2 worth less than Sp2K5, contest prediction wise anyway. Or who's the best. So what if Snake is top tier? That doesn't matter in the slightest. With SSB games, appearing in them is enough. Tiers don't translate into contest strength at all, else we would have seen Marth, Fox or Sheik in the field last year. Pikachu and Ness would have actual strength. That's not exactly what I meant. I was more using it as a hypothetical
situation to see how he'd respond since people do tend to be tier
whores in fighting games. I'm personally with you that just being in
the game will be more than enough. Plus, everyone will fight Snake at least in single player story mode if he's available to start the game or they'll fight him to unlock him, so it's not like they'll never see what he's like at all. Psh, imagine Snake SFFing and defeating Link. Now there's a dream come true. I wouldn't put it outside the realm of possibility, especially now that

From my understanding of the contest rules, a character
has to originate in a game, but there is no such rule regarding games
and series, so we may theoretically see Goldeneye or The Matrix

Although looking at how Ceej is doing things, the better Star Wars
games (Rogue Squadron, KOTOR) will count as their own series. But what

If every Star Wars related game gets included under one "Star Wars"
banner, it could be very strong. In 2004, KotOR did pretty well in its
own right. Now, combine that with Battlefront, Rogue Squadron, all the
PC games, and one of the most popular names in all of entertainment,
