| And actually, I'm not sure Final Fantasy is as great a lock as you
would think. The majority of it's strength comes from Final Fantasy
VII, and FFVIII and FFX aren't NEARLY as popular as VII. I'd say the
Mario Series could give it a good run for its money, although Zelda

Judging by the games contest, Final Fantasy has the biggest game on
GameFAQs followed by about three to four others that are very high up
there in strength. And I would say that Zelda has the best shot at

Nominations: Castlevania Dragon Quest Fire Emblem Lunar Mana Suikoden Monkey Island Ogre Battle Tales of Advance Wars Random Thoughts: Elite series include Final Fantasy, Zelda, and Mario. FF has to be the favorite, if only because FFVII did so very well in games, but we've always thought that Link the character basically represented the Zelda series. And Link the character can beat Cloud...the other FFs, notably VI, probably tip the balance, though. Are there any series besides FF and Zelda that you would pick over the Mario series? I don't think I would...the other potentially elites, Metal Gear, Mega Man, Metroid, and Sonic, all seemed to be a case in which the character was stronger than the game. But if you add an s and make it "games," I'm not so sure. The bracket is almost certainly going to be 32 series, because 64 would be nuts, and the "Summer" contest would start in, like, October. It should be very difficult to predict, as all we have are three year old games stats and even they won't be terribly helpful. An excellent spring contest, really, though it's a shame it didn't start a month or two ago. --- Mustache...and green... |

What's the guru contest exactly? Your Nominations Metroid Super Mario Bros Street Fighter Doom Madden Mega Man Grand Theft Auto Sonic the Hedgehog Donkey Kong Duke Nukem Thoughts: FF v Zelda is a blatant final (or virtual final, in the event that Ceej messes up and puts them in the same half). Mario I'd guess for third. They seem like three obvious #1 seeds (I'm assuming 4x8 divisions here), the fourth could easily be one of any number of series to be honest. I think it'd have to be something that's spanned multiple generations of hardware - Metal Gear perhaps? Or would MGS onwards count differently? My nominations - I've gone mostly for personal favourites. I'd expect a few of those not to make it, but apart from the obvious last pick, I wouldn't like to say which ones. I would not be at all surprised if Madden made it. After the big three, we'll have five more or less distinct categories making it: a) Obscure series whose games would do poorly in a games contest, and the series will do the same. I'm thinking mainly of RPG's here (Suikoden, Phantasy Star, Xenowhatever). b) Mainstream series that we all know will suck in a contest (Resident Evil, any fighting series, longer shots like Doom or a sports series) c) Mainstream series that are stronger than (b) but will still crumble at the first signs of pressure (Half-Life, GTA, Halo) d) All round popular series that will disappoint (I'm thinking of the likes of Metroid and other weaker Nintendo series like Donkey Kong or Kirby, Kingdom Hearts, Diablo, Chrono, spinoffs of potentially larger series that will be broken up into smaller chunks like Mega Man, Mario subseries) e) Genuine second tier contenders that could make the quarter finals. I'm looking at Metal Gear and Sonic as two that jump out as last eight contenders, although again it's dependent on how they're chopped up, if at all. I think at least a couple of the quarter finalists will come from last 16 matches between two series from category (d) who've got nice fourpacks. The bracket could be very hard to call, or very easy. d) All round popular series that will disappoint (I'm thinking of
the likes of Metroid and other weaker Nintendo series like Donkey Kong
or Kirby, Kingdom Hearts, Diablo, Chrono, spinoffs of potentially
larger series that will be broken up into smaller chunks like Mega Man,
Mario subseries) e) Genuine second tier contenders that could make the quarter finals. I'm looking at Metal Gear and Sonic as two that jump I guaran-freaking-tee that the Mega Man series will be stronger than the Sonic series. I question how hard the voters will think when voting - "oh, I like
Chrono Trigger more than Sonic, so Chrono gets my vote." I would think
that that kind of logic would dominate the "casual" voter. therefore, yeah, Mega Man will be all the Mega Man games to voters, FFT will probably be included in Final Fantasy, etc. --- xyzzy |
