I think Substance gave him a small boost. It released right around the same time as Subsistence did (March 03 to March 06).

If the Top 100 List is any indication, MGS3 is better received that MGS2, too. Subsistence is PS2-only though, right? That could make a difference when compared to Substance being for the PS2 and Xbox.....

The Xbox version was not exactly a massive success in terms of it sales. The Xbox was also not exactly the most liked system back then.

But yeah, Subsistence is PS2 only, but it seems to be "bigger" overall with that whole ability to play online. I would not be expecting anything big from Snake because of it, but something like a 1% boost or something could just be enough to keep him from losing to anyone else below him.

True, but at least it went out of his general fanbase. No, please don't retort with the Twin Snakes/2k4 contest.

A 1% boost makes Solid Snake noticably competitive with Sonic again though. As-is, Sonic beats Solid with 52% if the stats are 100% lol-free (and they never are, of course, but it's close), so they'd be close anyway. Assuming Sonic doesn't have another boost this year though (he probably will), Solid could be a very reasonable pick in a Solid/Sonic match. It just depends, as always.....

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but why are some people talking about Sonic boosting again? I really have a hard time believing Sonic Rush is going to do anything ...

Because I just saw it on TV ... Cloud, Sephiroth, and Auron are all in the commercial for Kingdom Hearts II. They are so going to benefit from that. Heh.

Sonic/Knuckles made a big jump last year for seemingly no reason, and since then Sonic Rush was well-acclaimed and Shadow The Hedgehog has come out on all three systems. Also, I suspect newer gamers that will be coming because of the 360 will be more familiar with Sonic than most of the other Noble Niners.

I don't expect a big one, but I would take him over Mega Man this year (I got Mega Man > Sonic right last year, for the record -- it's not because I'm stubborn, heh).

Eh, I don't see why any people coming in from the 360 are more familiar with Sonic than any of the other Noble Nine characters. The 360 fanbase should more or less be the same Xbox fanbase that it was before.

Sonic Rush was received well from critics and fans, for the most part, but it sold only about 155,000 copies. I would not worry about that boosting anything unless you also like to look at the Game Boy Advance games as helping him out when they come.

And Shadow the Hedgehog ... yeah. I want it to help them out, if only for the fact that the game was so poor that it managed to make people be thankful for what Sonic games they were getting and then vote for him ... or something like that. I would laugh anyway.

I'm speaking of the new gamers it should bring. With each new generation of systems, a new generation of gamers are bound to follow. It's hardly begun, sure, but new gamers are going to get ahold of new systems...

...Mario and Sonic are icons, of course. You cannot think four or more other Noble Niners are more well-known than Sonic, preferences aside, both in and out of GameFAQs. The general Xbox fans I know aren't big into RPGs (plus I wouldn't think new gamers start off on RPGs), so that would make Cloud, Sephiroth, and Crono -- especially Crono -- less likely to be known by new gamers than Sonic. Link and Zelda have always seen people confuse their names when they don't know the series well, and the Metroid series has always been a cliche series that's been behind the LoZ's and Mario's. Mega Man has seemingly died off -- not that games aren't still being made, but rather that old-school collections are his biggest claim to fame in a long while. Last, Solid Snake is one of the gaming icons of this era, I would say, but he's not been around as long or in as many games as Sonic, not to mention he's never been pushed as the mascot for a system (would it be fair if I said or even as the mascot of Konami?) like Sonic had. Even then, I'll simply leave that one open for debate if anybody wants to go for it.

New gamers are going to recognize Sonic better than most Noble Niners. That doesn't mean prefer him to most, make that clear, but new gamers coming in this generation will be more familiar with Sonic than Cloud, Sephiroth, Samus, Crono, Mega Man, probably Link, and maybe Solid Snake. I stand by my point, though it may not help him.

(would it be fair if I said or even as the mascot of Konami?)

Who else comes to mind as the mascot of Konami other than Snake? I know when I think of Konami I immediately think of Metal Gear Solid and then Snake.

As for the 360, the amount of new gamers would be very nice small, I would wager. New gamers do get brought in with each new generation, but I believe Sony more or less has it right when they say, "The next-generation starts when we launch." Microsoft's Xbox 360 is getting outsold each month by the PS2. I hardly think there are new gamers being brought in from the 360's launch right now. I think it is going to take more time. The 360 has not even gotten to the point where it is constantly being stocked yet.

I think the 360 gamers are just as likely to know Sonic as they are Snake and Mario. Are Mario and Snake going to be expecting a boost from the fact that the 360 launched, bringing in supposedly new gamers? I really doubt it. I would not expect that launch to effect any of the characters who are already existing in the contest. If anything, it would have an effect something Xbox related as opposed to some characters who have had little to establish themselves as big parts of the Xbox era.

I always think of Solid, yes, and I'm sure many do. I just don't remember Konami ever pushing for a mascot like we've seen with Mario/Sonic/Master Chief.

Difficulty matters to me. I dont ask for much, but I do ask to be challenged at one ooint of the other. FFVI, I at least thought I was going to die at certain points.

One of the big reasons why I dont think OOT and TWW are great games is because the lack of any difficulty.

Um... no? Only the people on the social boards even know what the hell that means, and even less so (ie probably just mainly LUE) will actually vote for it. I'm surprised it's doing so well.

Not surprising to see LUEshi in last... There are alot of LUEsers out there, and drawball has certainly increased his visibility, but there are too many SFF options available. Ngage, Snakes, and O RLY have to be stealing plenty of the LUE vote.

I'm with Lopen on the LUEshi matter. I was not even aware people knew what it even meant outside of social boards, or just the boards in general. When you have a bunch of other options that spread throughout the Internet as a whole, it makes sense that it would do bad.

if Gordon Freeman Never Wins was on the poll for us, just about everyone on here would vote for it.

It was Kratos Auron, not Kratos Aurion. That give Kratos extra percent. If Ridley and Kratos fought, Ridley would win with 60% of the vote.

That's pretty insane. There probably aren't more than 2 or 3 non-contest polls that beat that. In fact it's higher than 22 of the Summer 2005 Contest matchs and 217 out of 349 contest matches.

It looks to me like vote totals in general have been up lately. Although there's a lot of variance, vote totals over the last month seem to be averaging around 70k... vote totals a year ago were averaging right around 55k. If I'm right, that's exciting in terms of what it could mean for the contest. I guess it would make sense fo the site to be getting more traffic right now with the release of Oblivion, KHII, and Suikoden V... I hope it doesn't die down before the contest.

I wasn't here. What'd I miss? 16.47% 1472

hopefully I'm not reading too much into this, but this option's kinda interesting. it shows that one in six people that vote in polls don't come to the site every day.
