Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 279

Two months after Cloud defeated Link by 4761 votes, 47.21% of GameFAQs was 18 years old or older. (42041 out of 89049 voters.)
Five months after Link defeated Cloud by 5817 votes, 55.95% of GameFAQs was 18 years old or older. (42391 out of 75773 voters.)
Why has nobody pointed that out yet? It was just a less popular poll, as nearly everything is after 2003. Maybe you're trying to say that the older population votes more regularly than the younger. I don't know.

TRE already posted the list of previous polls. Check them out.
In other news, I got an e-mail from Squeenix saying that there's going to be a public screening of Advent Children in Los Angeles on April 3rd.
Also, the special edition will contain deleted scenes and sneak previews of future FFVII games. Whoo!

Old conversations are always fun. Great memory N!
The poll's pretty clear, GameFAQs users are getting older. And there are two good reasons to explain it that nobody talked about yet:
- This is the first generation (those who are roughly 19-24 right now) who is going to be gaming all their life. Not everyone, obviously, but a large majority is going to keep buying new systems every once in a while, whereas older people did not tend to do that in such large numbers. From what I see anyway.
- If we're talking about the GameFAQs population specifically, I think the contests have worked their magic and a lot of people now hang out here instead of only checking for FAQs, and this goes beyond Board 8. People who would have left otherwise (or wouldn't be here as often) have stayed instead.
<opinion>
As far as how said voters will act, that's a different beast. I'd say they are more extreme than the casual voters; they have deeper ties to some characters (mostly the older ones) pushing the old-school vote but I would think they would be more volatile on a year-to-year basis since they know and experience a wider array of games, are less prone to the good ol' peer-pressure hatred (i.e. "kiddy", etc.), and have less ties to newer games. I can see them flip-flopping between systems, companies and genres pretty easily when it comes to modern consoles.
</opinion>
I'm having trouble keeping up with this topic, too busy these days...
That noNN bracket + Gauntlet was really looking great. A pain for the Oracle Challenge but a feast when it comes to the contest side.
Oh, and that bit about Nintendo assumes that these rapidly spreading rumors of Nintendo launching the Revolution in June do not hold true. But, there are some things that point to it actually being the case ...
Any actual news items or anything regarding to that or only rumors HM? I'm really not keeping up with the news these days and that sounds really interesting. Highly unlikely but definitely interesting.

The after-school vote ought to be fun to watch. Too bad I probably won't be here to watch it.
As a side-note, I picked up MMXC the other day...and the games I've played so far (X 1-2) are better than I ever gave them credit for when I played them years ago. I'm still partial to the NES games though. I'll say this though: the final bosses are a real pain in the ass. I haven't beat the final boss of either X game yet, and the save-files make you start all those post-Maverick levels over if you turn the system off...damn them.

My favorite gaming release date remains 10/11/94. That was one of the
few games I anticipated enough to get the day it was released
(actually, I managed to pick up a copy a couple days early), and the
game more than lived up to expectations. (Points if you know which game
came out that day...)

I'm trying to make a games bracket, but I'm having problems reducing
the selection of Nintendo games. How many do you think should be
allowed in the contest. Here's what I've reduced it to so far.
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Animal Crossing
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
EarthBound
F-Zero GX
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Harvest Moon 64
Kirby SuperStar
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda
Star Fox 64
Super Mario World
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario 64
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Mario Kart 64
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario Sunshine
Metroid Prime
Super Metroid
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Pikmin 2
Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
Super Monkey Ball
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Tetris
Also is this too many Final Fantasy games?
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy

If you stick with 64, I'd drop Echoes (constantly overshadowed by
Prime, always seems to underperform) and FF4. I'd also strongly
consider dropping Mario 1, Zelda 1, and FF1, as the series are plenty
represented already, and it would be nice to have a little more variety.
Good choice with Mario Kart 64... but are we sure F-Zero GX is stronger than F-Zero X? X was the big multiplayer hit back in the day, might have left stronger positive memories.

A poll with options similar to this hasn't been done in a long time. The most recient one I can find is this:

The ones relating to which continent you are on are a bit more common.

Super Monkey Ball isn't Nintendo... Otherwise, it would have been Super Mario Ball...

Also Super Mario World 2, Super Mario Sunshine, and Majora's Mask have
snub contest material written all over them. We already know they
aren't as popular as their counterparts. It would be great to see how
they do in lieu of the others. But they don't really need to be in the
same contest their more popular brethren. It merely takes up the space
of more deserving games.

I remember, when I made a games bracket about six months ago, the
problem was trying to keep the Zelda games from dominating the contest,
both in number and in strength. you have to put LTTP and OOT in, and I
think Zelda 1 is a fascinating game in terms of how it would fare
against newer games. from there, WW and MM are both games that will
have strength, but you probably only want to use one of them. I snubbed
WW for MM because we've already seen WW before, though its strength is
obviously a little suspect thanks to SC.

We don't know and we don't know. The Spring 2005 Contest opened
nominations in early April. If there is a Spring contest, it will
porbably start around the same time.

CjayC is going to start a contest on the 1st april, but it will just be a 1st april prank.
This was actually the reason why the Spring 2004 Contest started on April 2nd instead of April 1st. Many people suggested that it might be an April Fools Day joke so CJayC changed the starting date.

I can't see a games II taking place now. It'd have to be a 32-way contest.
Let's hope it's females or consoles.

Bold prediction!
CJay announces a new character Contest on April 1st, with Link/Seph/Cloud and 60 others removed, leaving only CATS, Gordon, and Mass Carriers. At midnight he takes it back and announces an actual new Contest, this a 32 character Female Contest.
After Samus wins she is added along with Mario to the Tournament of Champions, leaving Crono, Mega and Sonic to do battle in the main bracket this Summer.
---
PS - Does anyone think that could perhaps result in an interesting Contest, or would Crono just cakewalk over the field? Because from one school of thought, CT has been fading while Sonic, Mega, and Snake have been at least doing a little something, if not much. And there's at least some reason to believe that Vincent or Bowser could rise enough to be a serious threat to Snake... right?

I'm torn on that concept. Samus would completely demolish the field if
she wasn't excluded, true, and a Mega/Crono/Sonic power battle is a
good concept... But at the same time, having 5 of the 9 excluded just
seems wrong. Very very wrong.

Doesn't it feel less wrong, given that
they'll all be Champions at that point? "Paper champs" or not, there's
at least a set-in-stone justification there, something that people
could understand even outside of this topic, unlike going noNN.

It's a statistically sound concept, it just feels wrong. Like there's something missing, y'know?
