Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 277

I'll agree that that's absolute crap. This is GameFAQs. Anything GameFAQs-related (not including the message boards, as that would get a little crazy) should be considered acceptable.

Good news kids! lol x-stats now makes full use of all the un-adjusted X-stats, if you so choose. It's all handled through a "Raw?" checkbox you can click. Also, if you haven't checked recently, a copy and paste section has been added, making it very easy to share a result. It comes out like this

Ganondorf (2004c raw) VS Ganondorf (2004c)

Ganondorf has a strength of 12.98

Ganondorf has a strength of 34.72

Ganondorf wins with 81.31% of the vote!

A 61,116 vote win.

But as I was plugging these numbers in and checking the old brackets, I realized what a shame it is that we have no SFF-adjusted numbers for 2003 at least, if not 2002. Seems to me there could be lots of potential cases for it...

Link over AiAi

Link over Fox

Link over Samus (maybe?)

Cloud over Auron

Bowser over Ness

Bowser over Yoshi

Aeris over Sora

Mario over Olimar

Crono over Kefka

Snake over Raiden

Cloud over Seph (maybe?)

Has anyone created an adjustment we can pretty much agree is decent? If not, and someone would like to develop one, I'll use it for lolx.

well, most people would agree that the 2k2 stats are horrible and would be awful to adjust with. do you take newer stats and adjust older stats accordingly? I would hate to even think about doing it, though I could see it being useful for obvious SFF matches (Crono/Kefka, Bowser/Ness, Snake/Raiden)

2003 may not be nearly as out of date as you would think. With the Nintendo Boost past us and a new Kingdom Hearts + other Square offerings on the way, I could easily see a trend similar to 03's taking shape in 2006.

And of course we don't need good 2003 numbers for entirely practical purposes. Nothing we do in this topic is entirely practical. I simply want the best, most accurate numbers to be fairly represented. I would hope people posting in a topic entitled "Stats and Discussion" could understand that point of view.

Eh, anyone think Chrono Trigger characters dropped last year or so?
From: Ngamer64 | Posted: 2/25/2006 1:28:11 PM | Message Detail
Because then it would be the Nintendo Trend; a Boost is a one year thing.

And yeah, CT seemed to stumble harder than the rest of Square last year.

Well, we may be seeing a Nintendo trend then. Or at least a Mario trend... *looks at Super Mario Bros. DS* That should, at the very least, help Mario, Luigi, and Bowser. Unless it turns out the game is awful, but I wouldn't bet on that.

As for Kingdom Hearts II, it'll probably allow a bounce-back for all of the Square characters that dropped, but I'm not sure they'll surpass previous levels.

Oh, and I think this may be the year L block makes it into the bracket! Tetris DS for the win!!!

I don't think Crono or Magus dropped, personally. Frog...maybe. What makes people think Chrono Trigger dropped is that Magus and Frog got exposed.

Certainly not of that size, but what little data we have suggests that Bowser may have gotten stronger simply between Sp2K5 and SC2K5, we may suggest that Nintendo still was not finished with its increasing in popularity. Anyway, I don't believe that Nintendo was boosted any further since then. I just like pointing out possibilities.

Hm. Nothing really. I think his popularity is just based on how many people download Chrono Trigger in a given year. If it got a rerelease, he'd bounce back.

Eh, I think he was already at the strength shown in SC2K5 for the Spring. In fact, I was an advocate of that ever since the contest started.

And that Ganondorf may have gotten weaker. And that Sephiroth got much stronger than both. Blame Advent Children all you want, but going from struggling for 30 minutes to an hour with Bowser and Ganon to owning every update against Mario except two is more than just that.

For what it's worth, it's hard to validate what the Villains Contest gave us because it's based on Least Squares, containing 5 characters out of 32 who have seen the light of day in a contest before.

Nobody should trust Bowser/Seph or Ganon/Seph for a seconn. I'm talking about Bowser vs. Ocelot and Ganondorf vs. Diablo as indicators. Now, they're only one match. Anyway, please stop saying "too little data" because I know it's unreliable. Ganondorf is hidden behind SFF in 2K5, and if Auron's past calculations are any indication, Ganon's 54% against Auron is more impressive than his 65% against Diablo, okay? Then, it's also pretty obvious that all of Bowser's matches in SC2K5 were more impressive than his 66% against Ocelot.

I just like giving ideas that have a small possibility of being true on occassion. I mean, we've discussed all the stuff we know for sure inside out... can you please not put down ideas that are very cloudy, everyone? Also, please don't assume that I firmly believe every idea that comes out of my mouth.

Or at least a Mario trend...

Personally, I think this would be more apt. The Mario characters definitely have had a lot going for them recently and I cannot imagine that stopping anytime soon. They get New Super Mario Bros. right before the 2006 contest starts, then Super Mario Revolution launches with the Revolution, which would affect the 2007 contest. They (Mario, Luigi, and Bowser most notably) look like they are rather set for a long time just with what Nintendo is pumping out for them.

A "Nintendo Trend" may not be too far off either, given how Nintendo really looks like it has done a lot to improve themselves. Out of the major companies here at GameFAQs, they definitely are the ones who have been pumping out great title after great title continuously and it looks to continue for a long time to come. Though Square this year is definitely going to be able to go even with them, I think. This should be their best year since 2003.

so what can revive crono's popularity?

I don't think he's at a crucial point where he needs to see a boost or anything, but I think a large influx of Square fans coming to the site or a new game/remake would be his best options at the moment. It is unlikely he'll get the latter, so he would have to settle for this year's Square increase if he were to get anything.

If you want to use Diablo as an indicator in 2005, Ganondorf is actually right around where he should be, just a little weaker, and he's not quite up to Noble Nine standards, since Sonic did quite a bit better.

And we have no idea where Ocelot stands. The Villains Contest had him above Kefka, but he lost to Pac-Man. Granted, I think the Pacster is a bit underrated myself (we haven't actually gotten a reading on him since 2002, you know), but nevertheless, the point stands, I think.

Insanity... I was worried about him getting in before, but now if everyone who says they would nominate him actually do so (doubtful, I know) I'm pretty damn confident about his entry, especially if Ceej does what he did with the nominations last time around.
