Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 276

Now, I wouldn't be opposed to 1st place getting to pick whether he wanted the sigs or a nomination, then let 2nd place automatically take what 2st didn't pick...

1st, obviously.

No prize for the runner up.

How about just the sig for the runner-up?

I think we should take that one step further. All losers have to nominate the character of the winner's choice and advertise in their sigs.

That's how I feel, and I also think we should keep it as an all-or-nothing contest. First place or go home, monkeys!

Yeah, prizes for anything but first place is stupid. Making sig space available for one winner is hard enough.

I've never actually participated in a guru contest (I probably will next time though :p), but aren't there enough people in it that when they all nominate a character, it's pretty much guaranteed to get in?

Is the advertising really necessary in addition to the nominating? I could see it being as nice prize for the runner-up.

The winner, in that case, wouldn't be getting any sig space. Just the noms. Well, he can choose. But he'll probably choose the noms.

Good point about the winner not needing the sig space. But yes, enough people participate to allow their character of choice a guaranteed spot in the next contest.

Well, then I'd think it would be better if the runner up got the 2nd choice.

For the losers, it's the same: they lose a nom and some sig space.

The winner gets his character in either way as well, or his sig space.

The only difference is for the finalist who gets a respectable reward for his run in the contest.

I'm thinking the winner should receive the traditional Guru sig prize and the contest nominations. Advertising won't really be necessary if most of the Gurus remember/adhere to the honor system and nominate the winner's character.

Ah yes. The sig space is, of course, not strictly for advertising (in fact I doubt it's ever been used as that).

Well, winner takes all works for me. So long as the nomination is a prize..

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is the Guru contest?

It's basically a contest among people on the board to see who can have the highest scoring bracket in the contest. Traditionally it was just a sig bet. The past winners are ulti, yoblazer, jmangamer, and voltch. (I think)

Pre-AC Aeris wins, after AC, Tifa does. I don't think AC's coming out 'til Fall though.

But nobody in that fourpack stands a chance against the Twilight Princess herself.

Sadly, I'd take Tifa over Aeris, Zelda over Dante, and Tifa over Zelda (assuming the match was held today). I'm one of Aeris's biggest supporters, but after seeing the hate she gets on this board I don't think she'd beat Tifa anymore. I don't understand why people hate her, and I don't think she has that much hate outside the board, but still.

After TP, I'd take Zelda over Tifa instead.

Zelda > Tifa.

I would do all of this before TP, as it is still up in the air if the game will even come out prior to then. That said, it does make the decision difficult with the added influence of Kingdom Hearts II, which Tifa is present in.

Having taken second I agree. When you get that close but miss it you don't feel like you've earned anything.

"Stop spreading your slanderous lies!"

Yes, indeed, stop lying. The Gurus are at least twenty times as sexy as the Oracle participants.

"Aeris/Tifa
Dante/Zelda"

Aeris>Dante pre-TP, Aeris>Zelda post-TP

Oh, so all of you know, when I win the spring Guru contest you get to say hello to Aeris. :)

I could easily see myself taking Tifa over Zelda if I was forced to see a bracket and had to make a decision. I find it quite unlikely that Twilight Princess will hit a release date prior to the contest at this point, unless something is shown by Iwata at GDC next month. Tifa, and Aerith as well, would have the added benefit of getting Kingdom Hearts II, which should help out a good portion of the Square characters involved.

Oh, so all of you know, when I win the spring Guru contest you get to say hello to Aeris.

Pfft. When I win, you are all nominating Captain Falcon. =p
