Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 276

OBJECTION!

There is a loophole in that post! Squall went by the name "Leon" in Kingdom Hearts and can thus be used as an example of such when he wins a match!

BOLD PREDICTIONS:
-The Spring 2006 Contest will be a 64 game bracket
-Starcraft will be the most overrated game on said bracket
-Final Fantasy 8 will be the most underrated
-Resident Evil 4 will underperform

None of those are especially bold. Sure, claiming that the next spring contest WILL be a games contest is bold, but none of those things are.

"Leon" technically isn't a Final Fantasy VIII character, for what it's worth...

But I was referring to Seifer or Laguna, hopefully. Seriously, they need some love.

And yes, FFVIII needs to be in a games contest, should there be another one.

BOLD PREDICTION #2: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater would finish top 25 in the stats if it made it.

Bias ahoy!

I can think of seven other games that deserve this more than Starcraft...here's a hint: they're all in Starcraft's eight-pack.

Full Guru Top Ten results now online! Full stats and commentary can be found in our topic

http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=25733170

Well, I'm not going to lie to you... the Slowflake snub was a disappointment. Other than that, however, it was another highly successful Guru Contest, and resulted in a very nice consensus Top Ten. Without further ado, I present

The Top Ten Matches of All Time

10. Ansem over CATS

The #1 shocker of the night! Obviously, we're all CATS fans at heart... and why shouldn't we be? The Day Vote ruined the dream, but for those wanting to relive those magical early hours, you can do so right here:

http://www.thengamer.com/gamefaqs/05Spring/05CatsTopic.html

Featuring what is surely one of the greatest triple same-time posts we've ever seen.

9. MGS over FFT

The first of what will be many victories for the Great Game Contest, as this see-saw battle stakes its claim to history. Who cares if they were only going to be FF7 fodder? It's the principle of the thing, says the Guru!

8. Knuckles over Magus

Wow, seems the Gurus love to see Ulti's heart broken. The largest upset in GameFAQs history takes the cake, perhaps by taking full advantage of its being so fresh in the Guru collective mind.

7. Chrono Trigger over A Link to the Past

The greatest SNES slugfest since Punch Out is nicely rewarded by Board 8's Contest experts... how could such a great battle not have been the very best of Spring 04? Let's see what Division 128 has to say about this.

6. Samus over Sonic

The Original, and Still the Best. Alright, 6th best... still, this is an amazing showing for a poll that I figured less than half our Gurus would have witnessed in person. The Legend lives on...

5. StarCraft over Halo

The world's greatest seeding upset, and one of the most popular polls ever, is propelled into a Top Five finish by our Contest Experts. Did you expect any less from the battle that had all of GameFAQs talking, screaming, and/or rallying like madmen?

4. Mario over Cloud

Knux over Mags you could attribute to CT decline, overestimation, a little of each... but this result? PGC and Sunshine were around, sure, but even with all that aid, you've no choice but to scratch your head at the way this stunner turned out.

3. Frog over Master Chief

The Gurus seem to take great joy in seeing Halo bite the dust, and I don't blame them a bit. The closest poll ever came within 7 votes of going the other way, and within 5 points of finishing as the #2 matchup ever. But instead that distinction went to...

*drum roll*

2. Mario over Crono 2003

The favorite to finish on the top of the heap was defeated in surprising fashion! Still, with so many great options to choose from, there's no shame in finishing with the silver. Especially when the gold was handed to a true classic like...

1. StarCraft over The Wind Waker

What now, Link? He may be three-time Champ of the regular Contest, but in the greatest Contest of them all, he just couldn't seem to get over the hump, being narrowly kept out of the Final Four four nights in a row. Suspicious or not, the Gurus thought that the culmination of SC's miracle run was the very best we've ever been graced with in a Contest setting.

Of course he'll be fodder. But you remember how the board was in love with the King of All Cosmos last year and somehow managed to push him up to a #5. I could see PW landing as high as a #6 if the board loves him as much as I think they do.

Isle's posts will be deleted soon enough, if you'd just ignore them and go on with regular business it'd be like nothing happened.

Anyway... who has a better shot of makign the contest: Seifer or Laguna? Obv not who would do better, just who has a better chance. I think with the nomination rally topic Laguna isn't too bad off. He should be able to take Peach down.

Despite never playing FF8, I'm in favor of seeing them both in...but not at the expense of Captain Falcon or Princess. I know Seifer's in KH2, but I don't think Laguna is...if he's not, I gotta say Seifer. If so, I'll take Laguna's chances of getting in better.

Psh, I say forget Captain Falcon. We're already going to see probably Marth and/or Roy. One new character who draws almost exclusively from SSB is enough.

Unlike Marth or Roy, Captain Falcon has an entire series dedicated to himself that has sold multiple millions. That said, I would much rather see him than the likes of Marth or Roy who are unknown to the public outside of SSBM.

I only say "Forget Captain Falcon" because he has to face Seifer, whom I would rather see.

Toad would be more interesting than Roy, I think. As for Locke or Marth...Bah, really a no-win, as much as I love the world's greatest treasure hunter.

Sonic. He'll have the added benefit of two different next-gen games. One on the PS3/Xbox 360 and one on the Revolution.

I'm taking Ganon over Sonic in a nailbiter.

Sonic vs. Snake is no problem - Sonic would probably beat Snake, but Pre MGS4 and Post Sonic's new game? No chance.

VV gets a big boost from Dirge but can't compete with Ganon's TP-related power.

Ganon just about beats Sonic and dispells the "Noble Nine"

Ganondorf is already stronger that Vincent. He's likely to get a bigger boost from TP then Vincent for DoC.

Pre MGS4 Solid Snake
Post new Next Gen Game Sonic

Sonic is already likely to beat Solid Snake. With a new game, it shouldn't be any contest.

Post TP Ganon
Post new Next Gen Game Sonic

If TP lives up to the hype, Ganondorf will have a shot at Sonic. It'll be close, but I think Ganondorf might be able to win.

I would never take Ganondorf to beat Sonic unless Sonic completely falls off the map, Crash Bandicoot style. I don't care how popular TP is. Sure it may cause people to like Ganondorf more... Just not necessarily more than Sonic. I've said before, it's particularly hard to just to fit into the upper echelon of characters.
