"and if MM:AC couldn't help his case when it was released in June 2k4"
How would we know? It's clear that his performance against Link was a fluke, he did better against Snake than in 2k3 his performance agaisnt Zero was underwhelming (but it was a weird sort of match anyway) and he stomped Tidus into the ground. Maybe MMAC was actually a huge boon and you just can't see it because two matches went weird (who didn't expect a Zero overperformance though, really? That was more MM vs. MMX than MM vs Zero).

We know because of how Solid Snake that year; outside of Tanner, he did
NOTHING to show he was a Noble Nine member. I'll leave Mega Man/Zero
alone because that one was weird no matter the outlook, and I'll even
leave Link/Mega Man alone due to the circumstances (though IF MM:AC
helped him I would have hated to see this match without it)...but I
understand that Kirby/Tidus is predicted almost exactly correct when
using a static Mega Man, it brings Shadow back down to earth, and EWJ
doesn't look out-of-place. I will have a hard time believing MM:AC
helped Mega Man gain in 2k4.

When I was making that, I was trying to think of characters that were
likely to get nominated, as well as what their seeding would be. As
weak as Vyse and KoAC are, I don't doubt that they'd return next
contest. Same goes for CATS.
My focus was trying to make a bracket that was hard to predict, and entertaining at the same time. There are many obvious setups (Zelda/Squall, Sonic/Snake, Vincent/Bowser), and a few upset possibilities (assuming TP is released before the contest, Ganon/Mega Man). I kept a few contest traditions (Sonic/Nightmare, Knuckles/Serge, Crono/Luigi...maybe) while also giving matches that board 8 would like to see (Kirby/Dante). I know it's not perfect, but I think I did a hell of a job.

I wouldn't mind Crono/Sephiroth one bit. Even though we all know who
will win, it's still nice to know how certain characters stand up.
Hell, I'd like to see Solid Snake go up against Link or Cloud. He's the
only member of the Noble Nine NOT to have faced one of the two.

And this is more random, but someone had mentioned Ryu getting a boost from doa was it?, when did ninja gaiden black come out, because that seems to be well received, too.

The noble nine matchup I'm most interested in is probably Sonic/Snake.
Even though Sonic looks stronger, I don't think it's a lock. Of course,
Sonic/Mario would be fun... I could see anything from reverse SFF to
regular SFF happening in that match. You'd think it would be closer
than Mario/Shadow, but then again, that match was almost 3 years ago.

I don't think Sonic/Snake would be in doubt. Sonic proved that he is
right on the heels of Mega Man and Mega Man has already proven that he
is a class above Snake. And even though Bowser had an edge against
Snake, I can't see him getting that close to Sonic.
All the Snake > Sonic talk came from the days when the 2k3 X-stats were the GameFAQs bible and everyone judge characters solely on how they went out while ignoring other matches (Sonic, Bowser, Magus, etc). I guarantee you that Sora will get the same treatment by some people during the next contest...

Luckily, the King of Evil is supposed to be huge in Twilight Princess, according to Nintendo! Pfft. You take your Mega Man's and your Samus's, the winner of 2006 without that cast of Link is clearly The King of Evil himself!!

It's a slim chance, but it's still there.

There's plenty of reason to want to perhaps lowball Sora's strength.
Sure, the match with Snake is just ONE thing, but both he and Alucard
underperformed relative to the board's expectations against Kratos and
Agent 47. And it's not exactly like Alucard's adjusted 2k4 ranking
is...well, legitimate at all. Honestly, while I'd still adjust him,
it's not like I don't have my doubts.
And no one's really going to be underestimating Sora this year, anyway, thanks to KH2. He'll be a wildcard, plain and simple.

I'll take him over Bowser after TP (and, therefore, almost-certainly
Solid).

Hell we haven't even seen a standard Mario game in almost 4 years!
Damn.... this generation is damn near 6 years old! Does it even seem like it's been that long? Why did the 16-bit era's 6 years feel more like 10? Same with the PS1...

The SM64 Bowser fights are great. Cool concept, that badass music, and Bowser looked much better than Mario in 3D.
Those SM64 Bowser battles were not great. They were pretty much made to flaunt the 3D engine. It's like they were saying "Look! Bowser's big, badass, and in 3D! And you can run around him and spin him in circles!" It's just that the 3D concept was so jaw-dropping back then that people (myself included) just soaked everything in. In retrospect, SM64 was pretty average at best. The great thing about the game is the physical control you had over Mario. That's about it.

Oh yeah, the Bowser levels did indeed rock. They actually felt Mario-like
with their design and heavy platforming elements. Unlike the rest of
the game, which felt like "Mario visits Generic Level 'X'".

Why would you want to ignore that? Tidus IS one of the best (in terms
of development, how well written he is, how dynamic he is, and his
overall qualities) characters in a video game.
Everyone makes way too big of a deal out of everything he does. He doesn't whine as much as everyone says he does. The laughing scene isn't as bad as everyone says it is. And so on.

I don't see how Bowser vs Ganon is in debate at all. They faced the
same character two days apart from one another, and any SFF would
likely favor the Zelda series.
